Roster thoughts

So watching Foles play yesterday almost makes me miss him but then I realized he was playing against 3rd and 4th stringers who mostly won’t have a job by the end of the week.  But man did he look good running that offense.

How about Horstead?  Might need to make a spot for him to stay?  Probably drop JP Holtz to make room.

My two fave players coming out of camp have to be Rodney Adams and Khyris Tonga.  Have to believe both make it.

After yesterday’s game I’m a bit concerned about Peters and Ifedi starting.  Both got schooled pretty badly early on.  Yes I know it’s preseason but man.  Hopefully somebody cuts a solid OLT in the next few days.

I have a few roster thoughts.  Get a starting tackle in here now!  Ifedi is not it.  Peters will get there, but may not last a season.  Okung is still out there.  I read where three may be a few teams interested in Foles.  Pray pray pray that happens, because his money would go a long way.  Lastly, there are some really deep teams out there.  We should definitely look at the Colts, Bills, Browns and 49ers practice squads for DB help.  We may not get a starter, but definitely upgrade our depth.

Horsted looked great, going to be a tough cut. He has clearly beat out Holtz and Holtz was primarily a blocking TE. I would rather have James anyway. I like our TE room, Kmet/Graham/James/Horsted is an extremely solid group.

Foles is O-Line dependent, given time, he is one of the best QBs in the league, without it, one of the worst.

I have really liked both Adams and Tonga as well. How about James and Ogletree making the 53-man roster, not playing in the final preseason game, and were late FA adds. Those are some solid depth moves that don't get a lot of notice. In some cases I almost prefer Ogletree over Trevathan.

Peters will be fine, he just needs some more conditioning. He has a few weeks to get there. Ifedi is also coming back from injury, so I didn't expect much from him either. I expect they will add someone once Jenkins is put on IR. He has to be on the 53-man roster first.  Otherwise, Simmons will take that spot.

I did notice that Danny T. was playing for the first several plays last weekend.  Until he got the turnover that is.  Wondered why he and hardly anyone else from the ones (think Vildor was out there for awhile) played.  Maybe to see between he and Ogletree will get the start?  I agree with you, they compliment each other's skill sets, or offset each other rather.  Ogletree is better in coverage and Danny is better at point of attack and plugging holes.  I'd be glad to see both make it.  Considering Ogletree was only there to visit friends then got an offer to play, I'd consider that fortunate for us.

I'm also impressed with James.  Especially, as you say, with him being a late addition.  He didn't come in until after Butt abruptly retired if I remember correctly.  He's developed a good chemistry with Fields. And I agree, with the four TEs you list, that will be a great room.

You're right about Peters and Ifedi, both do need more time to get in the groove.  Wasn't part of why Peters wanted out of Philly due to them wanting him to play Guard and also coming back from an injury...  I'm hoping he's not another Orlando Pace 2.0 like someone else pointed out before.  Great player, just hope its not all  behind him.

No.  Peters told Philly that he wanted to play one more season.  They have two young tackles that they slated for their starters and chose not to resign Peters.  His injury was a broken toe that he played with for seven weeks.

This explains Danny’s playing time.  Glad he made the most of it.  But puts him on sort of a bubble.

Biggs also noted TE Scooter Harrington was waived.

List of cuts:

Ridley (4th round pick, another WR whiff for Pace, add that to White, Wims, Miller, etc)

Nall (Herbert and Williams pushed him out, thought he might stick due to ST duties)

Vaughters (Ogletree bumped him off)

Snowden (thought there was a chance, hopefully he sticks with PS)

Wheatley (OL)

Graham (shocker, I thought he would be the last CB, must be going 5x Safeties with Christian playing hybrid big Nickel)

Eiselen (C/G)

Johnson (WR)

Kamara (OLB)

Johnson (K)

Redmond (OL)

Archibong (DL)

Harrington (TE)

Lacy (WR)

Hambright (OL)

Artavis Pierce (RB)

Ruffin (DB)

Coulter (WR)

Wow, this one is shocking.

Damn, two guys drafted this year with potential to make the squad are gone?  Maybe both to the PS?

Now that perennial Preseason star Nall is gone, should free up at least one spot there.

Losing Hambright and Wheatley clears up the question about the oline a little....

7 ILB is interesting but Jones can play both inside and Edge. So it is more like 5.5 / 6.5.

The biggest surprise for me Xavier Crawford making the roster over Roberson, Trufant, and Christian.

Quarterbacks (3): Andy Dalton, Justin Fields, Nick Foles.

Running backs (3): Khalil Herbert, David Montgomery, Damien Williams.

Receivers (5): Rodney Adams, Damiere Byrd, Marquise Goodwin, Darnell Mooney, Allen Robinson II.

Tight ends (5): Jimmy Graham, J.P. Holtz, Jesper Horsted, Jesse James, Cole Kmet.

Offensive linemen (10): Alex Bars, Larry Borom, James Daniels, Germain Ifedi, Teven Jenkins, Sam Mustipher, Jason Peters, Lachavious Simmons, Cody Whitehair, Elijah Wilkinson.

Defensive linemen (5): Angelo Blackson, Eddie Goldman, Akiem Hicks, Bilal Nichols, Khyiris Tonga.

Inside linebackers (7): Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Caleb Johnson, Christian Jones, Alec Ogletree, Roquan Smith, Danny Trevathan, Josh Woods.

Outside linebackers (4): Jeremiah Attaochu, Trevis Gipson, Khalil Mack, Robert Quinn.

Cornerbacks (4): Xavier Crawford, Jaylon Johnson, Duke Shelley, Kindle Vildor.

Safeties (4): Deon Bush, DeAndre Houston-Carson, Tashaun Gipson Sr., Eddie Jackson.

Specialists (3): Pat O'Donnell, Cairo Santos, Patrick Scales.

They released some players they will bring, IMO. Carrying 7 ILBs seems strange and you know Jenkins is going to the IR list. Tomorrow will be more clear. I think they tried to figure which players they might be able to slide a few players thru waivers without someone taking them.

This sounds right
