If I was the Bears, I would confirm before letting him go. I see it as you, but with tweets or articles on it from notable sources, you never know. Report

We heard from Matt Ryan and he said the GM and coach have final roster authority. Progress Update: Ryan noted the team has made strong progress in the GM search, having interviewed multiple candidates, including Joe Douglas, Mike Bradway, and others, as of late January 2026. Role Definition: Ryan stated he is not doing scouting or running meetings, and that the GM's responsibilities remain unchanged. Support System: His focus is on acting as a support system to ensure the new GM and Head Coach have the resources to build a winning team. Philosophy: Ryan expressed a desire to find a GM who shares a philosophy focused on building a strong, "tough" team in the trenches. Process: The search is focusing on changing the structure of team operations rather than just "recycling names". Report
January 30Jan 30 comment_232248 And NBC reported it too, based on Finley above. Im not saying that makes it true. Im saying its something thats being discussed, and to keep our eyes on. Also, if that is the ruling, expect the Bears to appeal. And *IF* it is true, then the Bears could have blocked the "lateral" move too. But I wouldnt expect they would do that. That how you lose other people wanting to come to your franchise. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-hire-ian-cunningham-as-new-g-m Report
January 30Jan 30 comment_232250 A lot of smart people saying we aren't getting any. At least the league can explain why. GM job isn't just a a coffee carrying job for Ryan. Report
January 30Jan 30 comment_232255 Congrats to Ian and shame on the league if it does end up this way. I really hope league comes to their senses here. Report
January 30Jan 30 comment_232257 And to be clear I have to think the NFL will get this right cause this is just a bunch of nonsense if the don’t reward Bears with the 2 picks. But hey it’s gotten to this point so maybe I am wrong. Report

January 30Jan 30 comment_232261 Heres the Sun Times saying definitively that we wont get the picks. https://chicago.suntimes.com/bears/2025/05/22/bears-joint-practices-bills-dolphins-preseason-opener-date-time-set Report
January 30Jan 30 comment_232262 I wonder if that's a situation that we can appeal that decision. It seems subjective to say he doesn't have any power on the management ladder. Report
January 30Jan 30 Author comment_232264 I hate this so much. The league will never convince me that this is lateral. Not in title, not in responsibility. Report
January 30Jan 30 comment_232266 On the Cunningham stuff, rewarding you for losing a minority employee only when they get promoted and fulfill a specific new position for another team is ridiculous. Teams should not gain a competitive advantage on the field for an administrative move off of it, especially when it is solely related to race. Like how do they even determine that? 23 and me? They just need to remove the comp picks altogether for anything other than player losses in free agency, because that is tied to a tangible thing like the salary cap. Report

End the Rooney rule completely. It has done nothing to promote minorities. It only strokes unneeded racial commentary. Report

January 30Jan 30 comment_232269 Greg Gabriel was reporting that it all comes down to the contract - so once Cunningham has signed his deal (which probably happened late last night) it will go to the league offices who will basically see who has control of 53. But beyond that - I just want to keep the point clear - huge congrats to Cunningham and its nice to see other team(s) wanting our people. I'm curious to see who Bears replace him with...presume Jeff King wlil get promoted but I'm also hoping we see the Bears bring someone from otuside to ensure they are building a deep front office with depth, experience, and relationships across the league. I read a story where there is a coach with Detroit last year that BJ tried to get and Detroit blocked it. The story said he is available this year. I don't remember the name of the coach. As we have openings it does give BJ the chance to bring in other coaches he is aligned with. Anytime you have success you have change. BJ already addressed that when he said there is no carry over that we are rebuilding again. Report
January 31Jan 31 comment_232283 This makes sense, everyone is speculating but until the contract is viewed by the NFL, it still may leave an opening for the comp picks. Report
January 31Jan 31 Author comment_232293 After watching the Matt Ryan intro press conference with Arthur Blank, I'm fully convinced we will get the compensatory picks. They said there would be no change in GM duties from the previous GM. Ironically, they hired their previous GM from the Saints, with the Saints receiving compensatory picks for his hire. Round two, ding ding... Edited February 1Feb 1 by Mongo3451 Saints not Cards... Report
