There are multiple reports suggesting 1 NFL source stated Caleb Williams is the first attending player to decline having his medical report shared with teams. Don’t know if the source was stating a fact or an opinion. I have no issue with this because: 1) The report would include confidential information. 2) Whatever is in the report would only need to be shared with a few teams. Caleb is likely going to be available to be selected by up to 5 teams and likely only 1,i.e., the Bears. Would anyone on this board want their personal information shared with an organisation they’re unlikely to work for, I wouldn’t. So for me there is no red flag. When Caleb meets with the Bears or any team that can pick him, he has told them they can do whatever test is needed. This situation will happen in the future because prospects are starting to question some of the previous norms and have greater power, which I don’t think is a bad thing.

I think Poles will take the BPA at 9 or trade down. If an EDGE player is BPA I cannot see Poles not drafting him because this is a hole on the roster. Our D will be so much better if we have a very good to a stud pass rusher/run stopper opposite Sweat. I don’t think it’s outside the realms of possibility that Allen doesn’t get a new contract in 2025. Also if Caleb is everything we hope, he may be able to get quality play from WRs on the roster other than Allen and DJ.

I haven’t seen anything that is giving me a red flag. He has only just met Poles and Flus so I cannot see why we are asking him to be all luvved up with them. He’s a young man and may be uncomfortable when greeting people. He knows Keenan Allen and wasn’t any warmer when they met. I think he is deliberately not alienating any fan base. Ok, we have the 1st pick, everything is pointing to us taking Caleb, but how will he feel going to Washington if he totally buys into the Bears and we trade down to number 2 because we have been offered numbers 2,36, 40 in 2024 and no 1 for 2025 and 2026. Even if Poles thinks Caleb is the next coming of Mahomes, he probably makes that trade.

Unless the Bears have an offer they cannot resist I think we’re drafting Caleb Williams. It was interesting to hear that Caleb and Keenan Allen know each other, and Keenan was there today. I wonder if Poles traded for Keenan for icing on the cake, to let Caleb know we’re all in and welcome a Chicago.

I’m in the UK, and cannot find anywhere to watch William’s work out, other than it’s being shown later on NFL Network. Is anyone seen the work out? Is there any chance that Rice is available in the 3rd round and would anyone take him. If he’s 70% of, Jerry, he must be work taking.

I agree. We just need to hope that Poles picks the right player. When Mahomes was drafted I think we didn’t pick him because he was considered a gun slinger and they didn’t want to take the risk. I hope we have learned and take the best player and hopefully we finally get a franchise QB.

I would agree that Williams videos seemed to show him being more accurate and having a better arm. However, I think it is hard to get an idea of Williams’ ability to read progressions because he is running a RPO instead of the system Daniels is running. Yes he goes what looks like his first read but it’s open. What Daniels does do is get the ball out quickly which is a weakness for Williams and something that was a criticism of Fields on this board. Daniels’ accuracy cannot be that bad because his completion % was 72.2 with Williams being 68.6.

Warner loves Caleb Williams wow factor, but in both of his videos he could not confirm what Caleb is doing with his progressions and he would have liked to have asked, “what did you see and why did you choose that option,” but conceded this had a lot to do with the USC’s system. There are ugly plays for all of the QBs that Warner has assessed.

I think we will take Caleb because everything points to him the consensus best QB in the draft. However, I have watched several breakdowns of Caleb Williams by Kurt Warner and I still cannot see where he is considered a can’t miss prospect or generational talent. I don’t like that most of his plays are RPO and this makes it difficult to work out his ability to go through his progressions. He has great ability to make fantastic throws when the play breaks down, but against NFL defenses this will be harder. He did make some quick reads that he will need to be bread and butter plays such as going to receivers when the linebacker dropped off or moved inside giving an easy completion. Warner stated he didn’t have the opportunity to speak with Caleb to find out what he saw and why he chose to throw to a particular receiver. I suppose the Bears can have these discussions when he visits Halas Hall. Wish it was as clear as others on the forum have suggested, I still feel there are a lot of unknowns. Warner has done similar work with the other QBs, but it will be hard for the Bears to go in a different direction unless major red flags crop up. It would be harder for the other QB to succeed if they chose to not take Caleb and he performs well.

This is a big week for the Bears, I think USC has their pro day on 20/03/2023, and hopefully within the next fortnight they have the private workout completed. If Poles is who we feel he is, i.e., a competent GM this will be proven by who he takes as his high draft pick QB. Fingers crossed that is Caleb Williams it changes the dynamic that QBs fail in Chicago. Hopefully one thing changes this year to what happened with Justin Fields, and that is if Caleb Williams or whomever we go with is the best player at QB, they start from day one.

Agree that Medicals are helpful to teams drafting players, but I read an article that there are NFL medics assigned to college programs so nothing unforeseen can come up or ailments are hidden. I suppose this is why the Bears knew Fields had epilepsy. The team medicals will complete in-depth analysis which would help inform the Bears decision making and probably why we wanted to meet with Williams. We cannot say there is anything in Williams’ medical history that would be a red flag. However, Williams probably wants to be the number 1 pick in the draft so doesn’t want anything that weakens his position so is sitting on his body of work and saying this is who I am and I am a generational talent that cannot be passed over. Regarding Fields other than not getting a decent return he is no longer a Bears so there is no need to keep talking about him. Before someone says we got what Fields was worth. My lasting comment is I would have held him all year, so if injuries arose at QB in other teams he would have better value that a 6th and as an UFA in 2025 signing as a back up with another team we would have got a 3rd (compensatory) which the Steelers can if they don’t resign him and he signs elsewhere.

Happy to get behind whichever QB we draft, but might as well have cut him for the return. Feels like we’ve been fleeced.

I have watched some tape on Williams and cannot see any strengths that are Fields weaknesses. Most people say the barrier to Fields being a success is him reading defences and making anticipatory throws. I haven’t seen Williams show this is a strength in his game. If you want to use empirical analysis, you need to separate fact from opinion. These are the facts that base my wish to keep Fields. 1) Fields has been saddled with a poor oline, receivers and play callers. 2) The roster has been decimated around Fields and it has had an impact on his lack of success. 3) Fields had greater success in college than Williams. 4) Fields played against superior competition than Williams. 5) Trading the No. 1 pick will return greater draft capital than trading Fields. Finally my concern with trading Fields is the roster is starting to come together and we have addressed points 1 and 2. I want another year with Fields playing in an offense that should not hold him back and a defense that is competitive. If we get a great haul of draft picks from trading no.1 including a no. 1 in 2025, if Fields bums out, we can move on and the QB we bring in will be on a team that is built to not hinder a rookie QB.

I think that is a strong statement to say Fields will soon be out of the NFL. Can you clarify soon, do you means after 2025. Also he won’t start another game. I think it’s unlikely. My hypothesis is whatever way Poles goes we need luck, fate, karma or whatever you call it to be lucky, and no one can categorically state Williams will have a better career than Fields or vice a versa.

My point that it’s a crapshoot is will always point to Tom Brady and you do not need to the take a QB high in the first round. Regarding Williams being a generational talent QB is Williams’ profile better than Andrew Luck. The Colts moved on from Manning and if they had instead kept Manning, traded the pick and got a large haul of capital, drafted well, the Colts might have won another Super Bowl for example instead the one won by Denver. I don’t think keeping Fields necessary equates to a decade of doom. Like others have pointed out, if we strengthen the team we might be able to win with Fields. I’m sure the season when we made the superbowl with Grossman, we could have won a second Super Bowl with Fields under centre.

I think we can all agree that drafting QBs is a crapshoot. It’s a lottery that no one can predict. My dream scenario would be to trade with a team where we can still get the best WR and the other team has a terrible season and we have their top 5 pick. Justin plays really good and we have a choice to sign him to a contract, take the 5th option, trade him because he a quality starter or we draft a good QB prospect and bring him into a great roster where our QB is on a team friendly contract and we can add quality depth. I have a good vibe with Poles who seems to be bringing in good free agents, can draft well and does not over over pay on contracts. Does anyone else feel that in our search for general managers we have finally hit with Poles.

I’m not opposed to drafting Williams or trading Fields. If Pittsburg swap Alex Highsmith for Fields I’m probably drafting Williams unless Poles has good grades on another QB then I’m hoping Washington gives a huge draft haul and we take that QB at 3 or 4. Our hand is strong because we can go several ways.

Totally agree that anything should be on the table. Whichever way Poles goes I feel more positive than I have in years and probably as far back as 2018 when we overachieved with Nagy.

If we draft Williams or keep Fields and trade the 1st pick, the only thing I’m interested is Poles chooses the best deal. Fields is unlikely to carry the team on his own, but this is a team game, and if you put Fields in the great teams that won superbowls with serviceable QBs I’m sure they would have still been winners. I’m all in for improving the team. if we get a deal similar or better to what Carolina did, I’m sure we could be successful with Fields. Would you keep Fields if we swap 1st round picks with Washington to receive their 2nd round pick at 36. Then we swap picks 1st’s with New England for their 2nd at 34. Then if we 1st with New York for their 2nd (no 47) and 3rd (70). We could then take the best players at 1st (6), 1st (9), 2nd(34), 2nd (36), 3rd (70) and 3rd(75). Having 6 picks, if they are hits, in the first 75 picks should enable the Bears to be better with Fields, opposed to taking Williams at no 1 and trading down from the 9th. What would you do, I know we would get slightly better than the value chart, but teams will overpay for QBs.

What does Ryan Poles need to do so the Bears start getting some compensatory picks in 2025 and to regularly receive them in the future. It seems like teams like the 49ers know how to manage the system. What are we doing wrong?
