http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/ Vanderbilt Coach Defends Cutler Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 17, 2009, 11:25 a.m. During Jay Cutler’s messy divorce from the Denver Broncos, his reputation took a major hit as he was widely portrayed as a spoiled, petulant brat in NFL circles. In the wake of Cutler receiving a mountain’s worth of bad publicity during the process of being traded to the Chicago Bears, Cutler’s Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson spoke out this week during a conference call to defend his former star player, according to Maurice Patton of the Tennessean. “I saw him (painted) as a whiner, spoiled, things like that,” Johnson …

I touched on this in another thread, but I think the Bears have to be at least considering drafting two WRs this year if the value is there. I'm sure they would still love to add a veteran (particularly Holt), but the amount of research the Bears have put into scouting the WRs suggests to me that they would probably be interested in getting a couple new bodies in there. So, if that's the case, which two WRs do you draft and where do you think you can get them?

In talking w/ a friend, more and more, I am beginning to think our 2nd round pick will be all about WR, and rounds 3 through 6 will pretty much go defense. Others might argue our need for a FS is just as great. Some argue DL is a favorite position for Angelo, and he may want to offer Marinelli (and Lovie) some more talent. But I really am beginning to think we will draft the best available WR in round 2. We all know WR is a need, but reasons I think we will go WR beyond that. Angelo went FAR outside his comfort zone in getting Cutler. This is the sort of move that instantly (IMHO) ties a GMs fate to a single player. If Cutler booms, Angelo will be remembe…

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4073253 Madden retires after 30 years in boothComment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services John Madden, a fixture in NFL broadcast booths for 30 years, has decided to retire, he announced Thursday in a statement released by NBC Sports. NFL.com Video John Madden discusses what the Hall of Fame means to him. Madden, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and former Super Bowl-winning coach of the Oakland Raiders, has been a game analyst and TV personality since walking away from coaching in 1979. "It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall," Madden said. "I have two gr…

I previously saw the report from some guy (I think on CNNSI) talking about Nicks, Britt and Harvin slipping out of the 1st round. Honestly, I didn't think much of it. While it may have been on SI, it was still just the opinion of one guy, which seemed to run counter to what most everyone else thought. Now I am starting to wonder a bit more. I read the other day Rick Gosslin's 1st mock draft. I am not saying Gosslin, or anyone out there is so perfect they know for a fact what will happen, but Gosslin does have a pretty damn good record, though he will have more versions after this one. But in his 1st mock, all three of those WRs failed to be drafted in the 1st …

This was posted on PFT tonight. I know Hoof won't be happy to read this, but I can't help being reminded of last year at this time when everyone was debating whether we'd draft Matt Forte with our 2nd or 3rd pick. Massaquoi To Bears? Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 15, 2009, 5:11 p.m. University of Georgia wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi has been projected as the Chicago Bears’ second-round draft pick with the 49th overall selection, according to Mike Mayock of NFL Network and Mel Kiper of ESPN. During a conference call today, Mayock, citing league sources, told reporters that Massaquoi is one of the fastest-rising prospects in the draft. Massaquoi …

http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/mul...lip=Y&rn=16 2 things: 1. It looks like he's having fun out there. When they were all throwing into the net from the goal post, he was slamming his hat down and laughing a little. That's good to see he's getting along with Hanie and Basanez. 2. The way the ball comes out of his hand is just so smooth and powerful. It seems like Basanez's throws take forever to get there, Hanie's are alright, and Cutler's are just on the money 100 mph.

  12. Wildcat lookout? Bears bring in Kent State QB Edelman for look By Brad Biggson April 14, 2009 10:38 AM | Permalink | Comments (7) | TrackBacks (0) The Bears brought in a quarterback to Halas Hall on Monday. But they might have other plans for Julian Edelman. Some clubs believe the Kent State quarterback projects as a wide receiver in the NFL or perhaps a contributor on special teams. He could run the wildcat also after becoming the second quarterback in school history to pass for 1,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. The first? Cleveland Browns electric return man Josh Cribbs. The interest seems genuine. Edelman worked out for the Bears a…

    2. Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State ---Either him, Nicks, or Britt will fall to us. I'll guess it's Robo. 3. Darcel McBath, FS, Texas Tech ---Smart player and a leader. We were at TT's pro day (along with the other 31 teams). 4. Henry Melton, DE, Texas ---6'3 260. Not a bad starting point for Marinelli. 5. Tony Fiammetta, FB, Syracuse ---Best FB in the draft and a definite upgrade over McKie 5. Louis Vazquez, OG, Texas Tech ---Strong OG who can compete for a starting job right away. Also, see 3rd round pick. 6. Mike Teel, QB, Rutgers ---I don't like going into the year with Hanie as our 2nd string. I haven't heard anything about veteran QB's coming her…

So this draft is pretty short (no pun intended) on big, physical wide receivers. There's no real "jumbo jet" here - no Calvin Johnson, no Andre Johnson, no Plaxico Burress. The Bears could really use a king-size wideout to complement Devin Hester, but there isn't really one in the group. What do you guys think about drafting Jared Cook from South Carolina and moving him to wide receiver? Cook goes 6'5" 246 pounds, and ran a 4.49 in the 40 at the Combine. Back in 2007, he weighed 235 and could run a 4.37. When he was around that weight he played split end and flanker, but then Spurrier had him bulk up and moved him to tight end. He's a very incomplete TE prospec…

I haven't seen this mentioned here yet: the Chiefs just put Will Franklin on waivers. Speculation is that he did something to get on the wrong side of the coaching staff, since he's got a fair amount of potential, fits their new offensive scheme well, and is just coming off his rookie season. I really liked Franklin when he was coming out of Missouri last year. He didn't put up eye-popping numbers at Mizzou, largely because of two good tight ends (Martin Rucker and Chase Coffman) and another wideout you may have heard of: he had to compete for catches with Jeremy Maclin, who's easily a top-15 pick this year. Franklin's career numbers are still pretty decent: 143 r…
