I hope you are joking.  Andre James, Lloyd Cushenberry, Aaron Brewer and Tyler Biadaz all could have been had in free agency.

Cushenberry would have been nice but he got a 50 mil contract. Of those 4 Brewer was supposedly the least talented and he got 3 years at 21 mil. You will have to ask Poles how he rated them, they all got signed before the draft so I'm not sure if he may wanted to get a drafted center.

  2. Do not discard the ceiling of what we can do this year even with a rookie QB. We are a few players away from being dominant. With 2 teams in the playoffs, if we win our division, we can make a run to the SB. Caleb will no longer be a rookie after 12 games so his true talent will start to shine.

I'm an optimist, if you can be optimistic for this year, you're not capable of a glass half full.

  3. When Poles is upgrading the STs, you know he totally expects them to be in play of winning the division and capable of more. Was he a free agent? Or do we save some money?

  4. Injuries are the only thing in the way of a winning record. Something people keep forgetting is a generational QB lifts the players around him. Even as a rookie ( will make mistakes) you will see him give the OL a boost and help make the weapons better if that is possible.

To add, I am Poles' biggest fan.  However, I have stopped him of his Lordship until the center position is proven solid.  From here on out, it could be coronation or castration...

Unless you were getting JPJ or Frazier, a rookie wouldn't be starting anyway. I have heard many football people say a rookie center and rookie QB is a disaster. It's very difficult to build a team and have 5 1st round picks on the OL in three drafts.

I get the concern he's building thru the draft for the most part and he wanted Rome and I read Poles was getting nervous and wanted to trade up to get  him so we weren't getting a starter this year anyways.

  6. I don't think we are giving Booker enough praise. Draft Buzz had him ranked as the 68th best player. Brugler had him at 78.  He was only a rotational player, 474 snaps only started one game. Which makes 37 pressures and 9 sacks that much bigger. One to two years of NFL development and we could have a 10+ sack guy.

This year as a situational pass rusher we could see 5 to 7  sacks which would be great. At 240 he needs at least 15 lbs added but isn't terrible against the run.

Also Draft Buzz had Kiran Amedgadjie ranked as the 63rd best player. Best punter in the last 10 years and this could be the best draft the Bears ever had even with only 5 players.

  7. A couple things I look at. I don't look at the team that went 7-10, I look at the team that went 5-3 the last 8 games. A top defense, and a better offense.

Rah, Rah for D.   We have Sweat for the full year, for Flus to better know how to use him. Stevenson, Dexter, Pickens, Terrell Smith will all improve. One more year of the DBs playing together with a better Free Safety. Booker and who ever  else he brings in will add to the pass rush. The only loss was  Justin Jones, who at the time everyone thought just played average as a grade. I think he was good.

    Top 5 Defense.

Rah Rah for O.  Caleb Williams, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, Everett, and Swift. Herbert is a good back but doesn't have enough durability to be a dominant 3 down runner. Johnson has another year experience and Swift is the bell cow RB.

A quality  backup TE, Center position ( Bates and Shelton). Improved. Depth along the line, drafted a swing OT and the most important acquisition, Shane Waldron. He run an offense with 3 quality WRs, lots of 2 TE plays, had a Bell cow RB. Took advantage of an average QB  and generated an  offense.

He  has better quality players to fit in those spots. Top 5 offense.

+1 yard in Net punting = 7 pts. Gill was dead last.  Just say Taylor add 2 yds onto that number. That equates to 14 pts on the season, which would've probably added 2 wins to the team last year.

Also, some are speculating that he could also be the kickoff guy if he can kick like he punts, pinning teams deep in their own zone.

So we will have to see how it plays out. If he is a top 5 punter for the next decade, great pick. If he is middle of the road or worse, probably a bad pick because most of the top 10 punters are UDFAs right now.

I heard someone talking gen stats and said he will account for 3 more first downs a game. Related to putting the other team in jeopardy and us in better field position.

  9. We just have to look at Gill last year when we needed a good punt and didn't get it and a team drove for a score late in a game. This will drastically change.

I can see us in the NFC title game and we have a lead, A good punt put them at the 3 yard line and they have to drive the length of the field with 50 seconds left.  We win the game.

The anchoring part is somewhat of a comfort, because Patrick was a Matador.  I guess I need to hit the film instead of bitching about what I want.

Of course it's an unknown but Poles has been making some good moves lately, I trust him to know what he's doing. He has two potential answers to the problem plus backup if injured. Its not  a Connor Williams ( who is still available) but definitely an upgrade.

There is a big difference in the roster we have going into 2024 versus going into 2022, or even last year.  There is a glaring need for a 4th DT on our roster and that gives Randolph a fighting chance but beyond his hustle on plays he doesn't offer much athletically.  I expect Poles will be looking to bring in more vet FA competition for that spot.  We might not even know who the 4th DT is until other teams make their cuts in training camp.  Everywhere else it's going to be tough for any UDFA to make the roster.  Somebody will have to show they are a special teams maven to stick.

Good points, right now we have 5 DTs, so Randolph would have to beat out Cowart and Michael Dwunfour for the 4 th spot.

  12. I think with the move to re enter the draft for a DE, clearly Poles thinks we're winning this year. He's just a situational pass rusher at this point but that will boost the DL.

As much as we still question the OL , Braxton, Jenkins, Bates, Davis and Wright will be an at least average graded line to work with. Poles tried to get Bates before and sees something in him. We have added depth with Pryor, Shelton,  Kiran A.

Last year our two big weaknesses was the center position and Borom when he had to play, we fixed that. The one outlier is the health of Jenkins, I don't think Davis will be a problem at all.

I think there still is a couple of moves to be made by Poles. Another DE and maybe an OL vet.

We are supposed to quiet our expectations because we have a rookie QB. I'm not.

    What say you?

  13. Also the 6th round pick you have listed will end up a 4 th round pick. Justin will play more than 51% of the QB snaps. Payton got rid of Wilson at a big expense because he's a tool. Tomlin won't put up with crap from Wilson. Justin will start at least 14 games this year, clearly a better QB than Wilson at his age. IMO

I talked to a Seattle fan and said Wilson is a ego tripper and aleiniates his teammates. Tomlin gets rid of malcontents.

If Allen leaves after this year for a big contract don't we get a third for that?

    So our 2024 draft is:

    1a) QB Caleb Wiliams

    1b) WR Rome Odunze

    2) DE Montez Sweat

    3) OT Kiran Amagadjie

    4a) WR Keenan Allen

    4b) P Tory Taylor

    5a) C Ryan Bates

    5b) DE Austin Booker

    not bad at ALL

We got major impact blue chippers at important positions QB, WR (x2), DE

And depth at important positions OT, DE

And added a very good center and punter.

There are 5 blue chip players listed if the punter becomes all pro. 5 out of 8 ain't bad.

There has to be some character or health concerns with Austin Booker.  It's not just us avoiding him.

I seen a couple of scout services that had him ranked late 2 nd round as a grade. He's light at 24o only one year of production.  He's considered a project with high ceiling. Poles moved to the draft at that moment because they expected him to get picked.
