Report: #Bears are closing in on 5 year deal with OLB Pernell McPhee. Deal is expected to be worth just under $40M total.

Awesome news, one of the top 3 OLBs on the market. Now we need a Safety.

Pernell McPhee to Chicago Bears on five-year, $40 million deal, nearly $16 million guaranteed

Really not bad at all, only $16 mil guaranteed is awesome.

Ravens ex OLB. 5 years somewhere close to 40 per twitter

I was intrigued with this name. Hope it happens.

He's ok, fills a need and will bring stability to the new system. Knowing all the OLB talent early in the draft, pursuing him early in FA makes me think we are a little more serious about using our 1st Rd pick for a QB. Feels like we have hedged our bet a bit with this signing.

Ok.

I don't hate this

More like using our 1st RD pick on BPA. If a QB falls, then that is a possibility.

I love it, dude is nasty.

Here's the PFF profile on him.

I'll highlight the best parts...

His pass rushing grade of +23.1 ranked him third behind only Justin Houston and teammate Elvis Dumervil, and he managed a solid +3.2 grade against the run.

Our signature stats show his 14.4 Pass Rushing Productivity rating ranking second overall and his 64 total pressures third. When rushing off the right side of the formation his 18.1 PRP topped all 3-4 outside linebackers. The next closest mark from the right side was 13.4. This is even more impressive due to the fact that teams have their best pass blockers on the left side. To put this into perspective, we can compare McPhee’s numbers rushing from the right side to teammate Terrell Suggs. Suggs finished 11th rushing from the right side with a 9.2 PRP. Suggs generated 46 total pressures from the right compared to 44 for McPhee. The difference is, Suggs needed 405 rush snaps compared to only 188 for McPhee.

Or Danny Shelton...Or Cooper/White....Or maybe trade down a bit for Collins....Or maybe, with the CB FA market so inflated, Trae Waynes.

Or I wouldn't be shocked if McPhee plays DE, he did line up there for the Ravens. I'm excited to see how they utilize him. All I know is he's a football player who gets after the QB.

Oh ya, and here's a shocker...Aaron Lemming broke the story. Wonder who that guy knows, obviously someone, dude is legit.

I was hesitant when I saw just 27 tackles last year, then I saw his snaps and sack total and I'm cautiously optimistic. If we could land a dependable NT, we could really go anywhere with that first round pick.

That is true.

This is interesting. Curious how he will handle more playing time, etc. Definitely fills a major need.

Pernell McPhee emerged as top under-the-radar pass rusher with 7.5 sacks behind Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil, played half the snaps

Re McPhee: was rated the 2nd best OLB behind J. Houston last year via @pff & can be effective at either OLB or 5-tech. He's 280. #Bears

I like the signing and hope his knees are ok.Heard Vinny Cerrato on Score mention that last season was his first healthy one in a contract year. His 64 qb pressures in 50% of the Ravens defensive snaps is impressive.

From what I'm told, Pernell McPhee will be playing at both OLB, 5-tech and 7-tech in 4-3 looks. Seen as perfect fit for Fangio #Bears

There's many positions of need but last I had heard, they seemed to have identified both ILB and S as the next plan of attack. #Bears

There isn't much in the way of highlight films on him. Unless you watch the 'land shark' rendition when he played for Miss. State.

That is awesome! I particularly like the fact he's only 26 so you hope that we'll get the full 5 seasons from him as a productive starter.

We now have at least one starting linebacker. We could sign another and still draft a LB with the #7 pick.

16 MIL for the first two years, and if he dont pan out, gone with rest of contract. He fills the Smith role on Fangios 49er D.

Hello Chicago #Bearsnation

Hard to believe this thread got pushed to the 2nd page. No one seems to care we added a guy who can be a big time difference maker.

It's a move that I don't like, but hope it turns out so I avoided the thread. IMHO, it seems like a whole lot of money for a part time player that sounds more like a pass rushing specialist and the move could be a big mistake. It also may be a genius signing, if he is able to carry over his effectiveness to a full time role with a lot less talent surrounding him.

Talent that leaves Baltimore is rarely as effective on their new teams. It almost feels like an Emery outsmarting the NFL move.

Dude was stuck behind Suggs and Dumervil. Hard to fault him for that.

You would think the guy that helped piece SFs defense together at least had some input on their first FA signing. Fox and Fangio are highly regarded defensive minds, I think they envision big things from McPhee.
