Thank God for the ignore function. Whine is what some people did while Fields was here. I wanted him to play better but he never got there. I wished him well and Fields haters like you jump to look at conversations from a couple years ago so you tell everyone how smart you are . I never said he ever was going to be a top 10 QB. I like the way if you support a player and hope he gets better it's a bad thing. I wasnt the only one on here that wished him well. Caleb hasnt set the world on fire with one of the best offensive minds in the league but I support him and expect him to get better. Now if he fails, you'll come back and complain how dumb I was for supporting him a couple yrs from now. Some people just like to be a little bitch because that is their nature. You havent made a post since May 26 until now and this is the subject you wish to comment on. That says everything about you. BearFan PHX
We werent Fields haters - we just watched the games, and despite hoping he'd be great (I was excited when we drafted him) he turned out to be a turd. That was obvious already 3 years ago. But to say Caleb hasn't grown this year is a huge mistake. Time is gonna show that opinion is trash too. Caleb's gonna be FINE. In fact, he's gonna be a top 5 QB within the next year or so.
jason
Re: Fields, he never got a real shot here behind a historically bad OL. Dude ran for his life and realized running was better than getting killed. Add in coaching changes and scheme changes for the obvious result: bust. Like an apple that appears OK on the outside, the physical and psychological bruises are there, and cannot be taken back. He was ruined and it’s too bad. RE: Williams, I’m still waiting for a few breakout performances strung together. New Orleans should have been one. He’s got the physical skills, but I’m still not sure about mental. RE: Williams, I’m still waiting for a few breakout performances strung together. New Orleans should have been one. He’s got the physical skills, but I’m still not sure about mental. I agree. Fields was a gifted athlete who never developed into the QB that he was projected to be. I supported him, as I do all Bears who are signed to play for us. There is no need for me to go into how he was mishandled and didn't benefit from a good HC, OC, OL, and one of the better WR rooms in the NFL. Simply put, the Bears failed Fields. Eventually, we had no choice but to move on. One thing I must say is that, from all accounts, he worked hard, gave 100%, and had the support of his peers. For that reason, I think it's sad that some choose to find it necessary to insult him. I hope he eventually finds success. I also agree with Jason that the jury is still out on Caleb. He's also a gifted athlete, but does he have that extra element —the one that cannot be measured with a stopwatch or tape measure? The QB instincts that cannot be taught. You either possess it or you don't. Only the truly great QBs are gifted with it. I keep hearing excuses. Footwork. Cadence. Etc... How long does it take to learn such basic skills? Caleb is like a beautiful rosebud. But until (or unless) he blossoms, opens up, and uses good QB instincts alongside his physical talents, he will never be a franchise QB. The potential is there. He has started 22 games over a year and a half. It's time. We need him to step forward—no more excuses. I really want him to blossom. BearFan PHX
Fields is a tremendous athlete. When he ran int he open field (before we told him to slide) he was a threat to score on any play from anywhere on the field. He reminded me of Hester that way. But Fields has never shown an ability to process and get the ball out on time. I dont believe he is a QB. Caleb is still growing, so those who say he hasnt arrived yet are correct. He needs to be a top 5 QB before anyone can say he is provably worth that overall #1 pick. To those who say "show me" I say that is completely reasonable. But Caleb has already shown a lot more than Fields ever did. Even Calebs horrible season last year was the 5th best season for a Bears QB of all time. And yes, it wasnt good enough. This year we keep seeing evidence that Caleb is getting the ball out in rhythm, and growing. I fully expect him to be a major stud. He definitely has the right teacher. But I think Fields would never be a great QB no matter who handled him, or what he was given. He just doesnt process. Caleb is on his way to greatness. Not there yet? Totally fair to say. But there is no evidence that he isnt on schedule either. I love what Im seeing from Caleb, and he will learn as defenses throw things at him, like the Saints zone blitzes this week - at least Caleb didnt bite and throw the picks. And when protection breaks down, every QB holds the ball and runs. Caleb often makes something out of that too, in Mahomes-like fashion. I wouldnt trade Caleb for any other QB from his draft right now.

I hope Fields finds a place that use him right whether a starter or backup. I just wish him well, he's not here anymore so actually dont think about him . Caleb is the guy I rout for now. He needs to make better decisions with the ball, get rid of the ball sooner and be more accurate. I think BJ will get him where he needs to go. These hopes are not any different from the same things people complained about when Fields was here. The trait I see different with Caleb is what he has shown at the end of games. He gets us in a position to win even under the worst of odds. Not every QB in the league can do that. He needs to clean up the rest of his game. BJ came here because of Caleb and I trust him to get Caleb there.
BearFan PHX
There is no comparison between Caleb and Justin. Even last year with no coaching, no plan, Calebs numbers destroy anything Fields has ever done in a season by a lot. It's just true.

adam
Week 8 - Maye is playing like a top 5 QB. I really did not expect him to be this good. 1. Maye - 67.5 QBR - 282 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT, 6 sacks, and 50 rushing yds. 332 Total Yards. Won. / Season QBR: 76.2, 2,026 yards, 15-3 TD-INT 2. Nix - 82.8 QBR - 247 yds, 4 TD, 1 INT, 0 sacks. 246 Total Yards. Won / Season QBR: 58.7, 1803 yards, 15-5 TD-INT 3. Williams - 62.5 QBR - 285 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT, 1 Sack, and 24 rushing yds. 309 Total Yards. Lost / Season QBR: 52.9, 1636 yards, 9-4 TD-INT 4. Daniels - MNF. / Season QBR: 50.9, 875 yards, 7-1 TD-INT, 2 FL 5. Rattler - 14.3 QBR - 136 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT, 3 Sacks, and 12 rushing yds. Lost. / Season QBR: 50.8, 1450 yards, 8-4 TD-INT, 1 FL 6. Penix - DNP. / Season QBR: 49.1, 1409 yards, 5-3 TD-INT, 1 FL 7. McCarthy - Always hurt / Season QBR: 23.9 (Last in NFL), 301 yards, 2-3 TD-INT Williams on pace for 3,973 yards passing, would need to average 236 yards per game for the remainder of the season to break 4K. His TD to INT keeps dropping, he is now projected to have 22 TDs and 10 INTs. Since the DAL game, Williams has 2 Passing TDs and 3 INT in 4 games, and shockingly, 3 wins. He has looked like a completely different QB since that game though, and it feels like he is not improving anywhere. Is there anything he does "good" right now? Hes not inept, hes just not consistent enough yet.
Stinger226
I listened to a podcast where they discussed Caleb being the wrong QB for the BJ system. They talk about Caleb being a creator and not fitting a system type QB. They used McVay going after Stafford, and trading Goff to Detroit. Goff is highly successful in the system. Is that the situation here? I think Caleb is a talented QB that can play in any system but I dont see him getting better at this point of the season. During the game the announcers showed a stat where Caleb holds the ball the longest of any starting QBs in the league 3.07 seconds. How long will it take him to do the little things like being accurate, making the right decisions when under pressure. A simple thing like running out of bounds late in the game, instead he tried to gain more yds. Throwing in to double coverage to his favorite WR (Rome) instead of a different player open over the middle. I think his problems are mental and am waiting for the moment he becomes the #1 pick QB I expect him to be.

Some of what I saw from him yesterday was concerning and some not so. It appeared that about midway through the game he was doing 2 pt reads and only looking at half the field. I’d imagine that could be by design and that Johnson wants him to learn how to read the field more thoroughly or it’s just that Williams isn’t able to process it all. Later in the game, during garbage time, they put him into a two minute offense mode and he seemed to do better. Although then he was trying to push it to other receivers like Zaccheus and I believe Duverney and still missing. I’m always a fan of faster offense so maybe this is what they do more of? adam
Here is a graph of Caleb's Comp%, QB Rating, and QBR. I will add PFF Grades once this week's grades are out. To me, this looks like he is regressing across the board. With 7 games, you can take out the middle game, which was right before the bye, and assess in 2x 3-game increments. In his first 3 games, he had 7 TD-1 INT, with 3 games at or above average. Then in his last 3, he has 1 TD, 2 INTs and 2 of the 3 lowest graded weeks this season.
