  1. The Philadelphia DA decided about a month ago not to press charges against Harrison in that case, and the man who stated that Harrison was involved is facing charges on making false statements to police. That same man has supposedly filed a civil case against Harrison, but it seems likely he will face no jail time. The case is still open so things could change if new evidence or witnesses come forward.
  2. Hard to see where the offseason will go at this point, but there's one thing I come back to. Last year, no team got as close to using up its cap space in its entirety than the Bears. They quite literally killed off every cent they could. If they're cutting Brown, they're going to fill that spot and they're going to use the dollars somewhere. They misfire sometimes, but they always make the effort.
  3. If I was in the negotiating room and I'd been coming off of a playoff season, that's the kind of perspective I'd take if I were in a bad financial position...set a price I can afford, and don't budge from it. If you believe the PFT numbers, pre-cuts and restructuring the Dolphins should be about $19 million under the cap this year. That suggests to me that the dolphins are worrying about their revenue numbers for the upcoming year quite a bit and want to control salaries accordingly.
  4. I could totally see the Jets moving on Garcia.
  5. Without knowing how the economy is hitting football teams (We may not know that until the summer, frankly) it's hard to say. Who'd have thought the MLB FA market would collapse 1/2 the way through the offseason?
  6. The most simple way to put it to me is to look at 2010. Right now, the only QB the Bears have under contract for 2010 is Hanie. If Orton puts together an average season and then someone offers him more money than he's worth, and the Bears don't want to use the $15 million plus QB franchise tag on him, the Bears QB in 2010 will be Hanie with no backup. Either the Bears need to draft a top 3 round QB this year or they need to sign a FA to a deal that lasts at least 2 years. Otherwise either Orton has them over a barrel or they're simply doomed in 2010. Any QB is a reasonable option in that case.
  7. With both Tait and booker gone, that saves the bears what, another $5 million in cap space? Clearly they need to resign St.Clair and add another lineman, but that helps.
  8. The Bears would be foolish to not have their hands in going after every WR on the market.
  9. Fairly surprised the Bears haven't even called yet. If they get outbid on him, fine, but at least making an offer should be a no-brainer.
  10. The Bears may be more likely to spend some cap room trying to bring in a veteran WR than trying to draft and develop another one. At least, that's what I'd do.
  11. With the Bears already having Orton and at least having the (not a good option) franchise tag available, trading up for a QB doesn't strike me as intelligent unless the Bears see something in Sanchez they really, really like. The #3 QB on the list, Josh Freeman from K-State, might be a reasonable option who isn't that far below Sanchez, and he might also drop in to the 2nd depending on his workout performances. Conversely, trading up for a QB doesn't seem like something the Bears would do, and frankly, they have enough need of players that I wouldn't sacrifice a 2nd or 3rd rounder on moving up a little bit to get one. If someone falls, grab him or make someone overpay for your pick. If not, then the Bears have a wide enough variety of needs that they can almost go BPA at their slot and no one will be mad.
  12. Given the Bears' QB situation, if Sanchez falls, you make someone dramatically overpay in that 5 minutes for your slot or you take him unless you really don't like him for some reason. We're not in a position to go with our QB rotation in 2010 being: 1. Caleb Hanie, 2. Profit!
  13. While the cap may be going up yes...I wonder how the actual financial situation of these teams currently looks. It's all but guaranteed that their owners have taken beatings in the markets in the last year. Also noted...these #'s are all pre-cap-shuffling. The Bears won't be tagging anyone, the Bears don't really have anyone they need to extend other than possibly Orton and I think it looks like they're going to wait on him until next season, the Bears might well be able to save a little more by renegotiating a contract or two (Vasher?) or by making a cut or two as well.
  14. Well, I think the Jets just became likely players for one of Warner, Collins, or Garcia.
  15. Housh was also on 950 AM in philly today and expressed a strong desire to play there.
  16. Bringing in a guy like Warner would also hamstring the Bears to needing to draft a QB immediately, because it would consign Orton to the bench. Warner at most has 2 years left, right? Orton has 1 year left on his contract. If we consign Orton to the bench, he's almost certain to leave next offseason; the Bears aren't spending $15 million to franchise a backup, and Orton won't be staying in a place where he won't have a good chance to start right away based on his adequate performance last season. So, you quarterback process would go: 2009, Warner, Orton, Hanie, 2010, Warner Hanie, 2011 Hanie. I can understand bringing in competition or a backup. I can't understand how bringing in Warner is thinking long term for this team.
  17. Given how many pieces of his old staff we have, what's the harm in giving him a tryout?
  18. Resigning St. Clair would be a solid move on almost every front. I think Williams so far strikes me as the only 1st round O-Lineman last year who didn't have a decent season. They really need an impact from him.
  19. What? Did you just say that the Raiders couldn't cut DeAngelo Hall if they wanted to? The Cornerback they cut 8 games in to last season who is already playing with the Redskins?
  20. Perhaps they already have the outline of a trade worked out?
  21. I find it to be absolutely implausible to expect that a team will give up something of value in a trade for him while at the same time take a $14 million guaranteed dollar cap hit. The Patriots can't be stupid enough to believe someone will do that. The only reason it makes sense to tag him is if you have a high probability that Brady will not be ready this September. Otherwise, the franchise tag for a QB is just too much of your cap room.
  22. Assuming he's franchised...you're taking a $14 million cap hit this season, in addition to the draft pick or whatever you're giving up.
