One thing to keep in mind is we don't have Nagy trying to force a fatally flawed offensive playcylling scheme. The biggest key to the offense in 2022 and beyond is how well Getsy can craft an offensive playbook and execute smart play calling to put our guys in a position to succeed. So often with Nagy our guys were behind the 8 ball and set up to fail, and fail they did. Getsy is an unknown but he's highly thought of and respected by his former players and coaches in GB. If he can put our players in a position to succeed by creating his offense to fit the players he has, then it's on them to execute. Naggy put Fields in a bad position trying to make him something he was not, not properly utilizing his strengths. An offense can be loaded with talent but with a flawed offensive scheme they would struggle to reach their collective potential.

Agree, Emery and Pace tried to build with the pieces they had rather than cutting dead weight. What Poles is doing reminds me more of when Angelo took over and cut dead weight and reshaping the roster. We did find success from this process and he built a SB contending team under Lovie's leadership. This is the better approach by making an honest evaluation of the roster top to bottom, and make some hard choices to rebuild the team the right way.
-
We're so used to our GM's making costly mistakes it can be easy to project that onto Poles and view his moves through that lens. Making the contract signing contingent on passing a physical was smart giving how recent the injury was. It was a calculated swing at a player with upside that if healthy (passing a physical) would be a good add, but he gave himself an out if he didn't pass. Also I don't look at it as him missing out on other players as I don't think they targeted more than a couple players in the first wave to go after. Can't miss players you weren't targeting. Pace would have signed him anyway because he had "conviction" about the signing.

I feel like I read or heard that Bates is a pretty versatile lineman. I'm happy that he signed our offer sheet and now hope the Bills decide not to match. We're adding some good talent to the line whether it's projected starters or depth. Not only do we need to bolster the starting line but need to improve the depth behind them.
-
I don't think we can ever rule out our team being successful this coming season. To me the difference is expectation. I don't place an expectation of success in wins and losses. To me this season being a success is measured differently, it's about building that foundation for the future and creating the identity the team will have under the new regime. If we also succeed in the win/loss column that is a welcome outcome, and would help reinforce what Ryan and Mat are trying to create here. Especially for the guys who will make up the core of this team in the near future.
-
Not a bad idea if he's able to structure it right that it's just front loaded enough that the Bills will not try to match but not crippling to us. Wasn't this how we got John Tait away from KC somewhere around 2005/2006? We do also have the Vikings and the Pats to compete with. We did free up some room when the Ogunjobi signing fell through, I know we've signed others since then.

It is a different process and approach than we're used to. It's hard watching all the movement in FA and seeing us make minor moves, Poles is focused on doing things right rather than doing things fast. Pace more than Emery and Angelo was willing to sacrifice the future to patch the present and that catches up with you especially if the patches you are over paying for only mask issue or just outright do little to help. I don't see Poles overpaying for a has been in Graham, selling the farm to move up 1 spot in the draft to take a QB likely would have been there at your spot, selling the farm for a disgruntled talented QB with character issues (Angelo), and the list goes on. Pace was the type to have conviction about a move which can be good but it tended to be blind conviction that he would commit or overcommit whatever resources necessary to make a move happen. He would lose sight of whether that move reaches the point where it's not worth it and you need to let it go and change course. Sorta like having a plan in mind and not really having a pivot in mind if that plan doesn't work out. In the past we've compounded poor drafting especially at the top end of our drafts by overpaying to cover for those mistakes. It's why we're in the cap situation and the draft capital situation we are now, with a team that's not close to being a real contender. Fixing this the right way will not be an overnight fix, it will take time. If Poles is able to rebuild from the trenches out and can build the Bears back to being an annual contender it'll take patience from us as fans to trust the process and give him a chance to do what needs to be done. We're just now trying to do the reset/rebuild that should have started last offseason. Poles has his work cut out for him. There are a lot of unknowns. We haven't seen Poles run a draft, we haven't seen Poles run a full offseason, we haven't seen him work in season. First time GM, first time HC, OC, etc. Thus far he has stuck to his overall stated plan to rebuild our roster. It's a positive change that he stuck by what he said he'd do and didn't follow through on the signing after the failed physical. It's an unfortunate situation where you and your staff targeted someone early in FA but made the hard right decision to not go forward, for the greater good of the team. He also seems more interested in getting feedback and advice from others. Doesn't seem to suffer from "smartest man in the room" syndrome.

Bears Sign Bengals DT Larry Ogunjobi (40M over 3 years)
BearFan2000 replied to DABEARSDABOMB's topic in Bearstalk
I too don't see this as a mistake either, the mistake would have been to just go through with the signing and hoping it works out (ala Pace). Poles, and probably the coaching staff obviously identified Ogunjobi as the exception to his plan to hold off till wave 2 and 3 of FA. From what it sounds they weren't targeting any other first wave guys, so you can't really "miss out" on guys you weren't targeting anyway. I think sometimes we're too quick to assume our GM screwed up cause we're so used to our GM's making costly mistakes. Sometimes even when they do or don't do something we think they should do. This is his first offseason as a GM, first time GM, and I feel like him standing his ground on taking medical evaluations seriously and making the right call to not go forward with signing a guy and paying him 13.5 mil a year when there are real concerns about him being healthy enough to play. Especially if you are signing a guy to be the anchor of your defensive front going forward. -
Bears sign Pringle (From Chiefs) and ST. Brown (from Packers)
BearFan2000 replied to DABEARSDABOMB's topic in Bearstalk
Part of that has to do with most WR's in GB not named Davante Adams. Watching the Packers play Rodgers literally forces the ball to Adams most of the time. Look at the target distribution. It's hard to shine or show what you're capable of as a WR when you don't see the ball much. As a ND fan I was hoping the Bears would take him in the draft. I can see the former Packers WR's that end up elsewhere this offseason wanting to prove themselves now that they are out of the shadow of Adams. -
There's so many factors at play, I have no doubt Poles is actively going after players, and we don't know who we've reached out to or offered to and who we haven't. From a FA's perspective, especially wave 1 and high end wave 2 guys. Given the choice to play for a team contending now vs a team that hopes become a contender in future years, odds are they will want to play for a team winning now. We could even offer more money but the lure of playing for a playoff team is likely to outweigh the money. Which is why teams in our situation often have to pay at or above value to land guys. The ones that will sign here more than likely either need to prove it or they look at our team and feel that the future is bright and want to be part of something like that. That said it is hard as a fan to balance seeing big name guys getting deals and wanting us to sign impact players and trusting the process of a new GM and coaching staff constructing the roster to fit their vision for the team's future success. We're more than a couple impact players away. And each offseason will have it's own list of big name impact FA's to go after when we are in more of a win now situation.
-
I'm on board with Landry as well. He's not flashy but he's generally a dependable possession WR that would be a good option for Fields. You need utility guys like that especially for a young QB. I like Tretter as well, I can see Poles throwing a lot of darts at OL this offseason, we've added a couple here in FA, we'll for sure draft some, and I can see us going after some in UDFA market.

Bears Sign Bengals DT Larry Ogunjobi (40M over 3 years)
BearFan2000 replied to DABEARSDABOMB's topic in Bearstalk
This. Moving up or down in the draft has to be purposeful and thought out (given sometimes you don't have a lot of time to decide). I do prefer trading back and adding picks but at the same time I don't want to see us do it just to do. that and accumulate picks if we can stay put and add a piece that will help our team going forward. This is exactly how you need to approach trading back or trading up. It all comes down to who's on your board as your pick nears. Being aware of who other teams might be targeting ahead of you to decide if you can move back and still get someone you've targeted. -
And that's partly why these guys are still out there. I must say I'm pretty surprised by the Adams trade to the Raiders. His path to the playoffs was way easier in GB, from what I've read the Packers were offering similar money and type of contract and Adams chose chose the Raiders over staying in GB. It sounds like there was some bad blood left over from previous failed negotiations. That leaves Rodgers in GB to throw to who? lol. I bet they keep MSV, add one or two lower tier FA, and likely use that first rounder on a WR. So they'll have "stone hands" MSV, a couple FAs, and a Rookie. A lot of Davante's stats were inflated due to Rodgers basically forcing the ball to Adams that was the only WR he trusted. Should be interesting to see how this plays out. Enjoy your 150 million Arod. For Adams side he'll be the Raiders top dog for sure, but that is a way tougher division. You go from being on the team that usually dominates their devision playing against the Lions, Vikings, and Bears to facing KC, Chargers, and Denver. In GB you could almost guarantee at least a 4 seed playoff spot most years. To the Raiders where you could easily more often be the 3rd or 4th best team in your division and hope for a wildcard spot. I'm good with the St. Brown and Pringle signings I wouldn't be surprised if we don't sign one more or make a minor trade. We'll likely draft a WR or two and I can see us being active in the UDFA market to add guys that slipped out of the draft. What we need to remember is we are not in a win now mode, we are in an evaluate and retool or a soft reboot mode. This season is more about setting the foundation for future success. So we're not going to be going all in on many splash signings. I'm good with the Ogunjobi signing as our "splash" signing the dude is mean and gives us that nasty presence on the line that we'll need. I feel like the moves we are making are typical of a new GM/Coach retooling the team to fit what they are looking for.

No interest in OBJ, we’re trying to build a positive culture. He is a cancer.
-
Robinson was partly a victim of bad scheme, and usage (sabotage?) to the point he basically checked out at some point last year. Waste of cap space used to tag him only to not really use him. Golladay like most NY WR's was rarely healthy enough to play or be effective, your best ability is often availability and he rarely was. NY had a nightmare year when it came to WR health. I do see us signing some lower tier FA's and drafting 1-2.
-
I feel like scarcity of good options at WR in FA has driven up the prices, so you either overpay or look to the draft. To get a a decent FA WR in here we'll likely have to pay more than we should but that's the case for everyone as the market is dictating this. We may have to accept slightly overpaying or take what we can get in the draft and sign whoever we can afford. Sadly thanks to Pace who we bring in will probably be more cost related than talent related. But there are always guys out there who have been overlooked or overshadowed or have question marks that can motivate them to take a prove it deal. It is what it is, It will take Poles some time to fix the mess Pace's short sightedness put us in. When you keep mortgaging the future to fix the present and continually fail to fix the present at some point you pay the price. 2022 is going to have to be a throw away season other than rebuilding the foundation for 2023 and beyond. If we end up with one of Kirk, Ju Ju, Gage, or a WR of that level I would be happy, but as you pointed out we need the right kind of player in here to help set the tone that Poles and Eberflus are trying to create here. If we can bring in a good role player vet at WR and then draft one or two then see what we have at the end of this coming season and re-evaluate the position.

It sure would be nice to unload Foles and get something back rather than have him here wasting a roster spot and cap space. Indy is in a bit of pickle now but they wouldn't have pulled the trigger on the Wentz trade if they didn't have some plan for his replacement either in the draft or FA. Gimmy G would be too expensive and really not worth it, he's not really that good. In my opinion it would have been just as well to keep Wentz. There's a lot of buzz about teams being interested in Trubisky, Watson is an unknown due to the legal issues, Foles could be a good fit and would be a good mentor to a draft pick. I don't know where Indy picks so I don't know what realistic draft options they have. Rivers and Wentz are more stop gap options to kick the can down the road till a better option is available. We can also take Mike Williams off the list of possible WR's he got an extension with the Chargers for like 60 mil
-
It's sounding like the original reported 4 years 200 mil deal is not true, and that a deal is not worked out yet other than Rodgers intends to be back, and from the sounds of it (Macafee, and Rodgers' own tweet) that the intention is to make the extension team friendly. I have no doubt his verbal commitment to GB included them committing to bringing back Adams, outside of that it's hard to know what the collateral damage will be to the roster to keep both Rodgers and Adams. I'm bummed it wasn't a 200 mill contract plus the 20 mill to tag Adams as that would have made it hard to put as much talent around them as they did in the past. If Rodgers is smart and can think of the bigger picture instead of himself only then it's possible they are able to keep enough talent there to compete each year. I could see Love being traded but what value would he bring? It does annoy me to some degree that they keep calling it the last dance, where I assume Rodgers thinks of himself as MJ and perhaps Adams as Pippen. In his entire time in GB they've won 1 championship. MJ and the Bulls entered their last dance having just come off winning their 5th title in 7 seasons and Phil only called it the last dance because everyone knew Krouse was going to likely blow it up at seasons end. And it was their intention to go out on top and win one last championship. Rodgers (and even including the Favre years) have very little to show for in the way of titles to even compare themselves to the 90's Bulls. I absolutely loved the quote from Barkley that "Rodgers is that girl you have to tell her she's pretty every day" Pretty much nailed it. Reality though is that like many of us had hoped (myself included) that Rodgers would leave town, Adams would leave and Jordan Love era would begin leading to the Packers decline while the Bears go on the rise. But, the more I think about it I'd much rather see Fields come into his own, and the Bears rise up and beat them at full strength, the victory would be far more satisfying. The Wilson trade I feel is a tale of two teams and can't fully be judged till we see how the picks Seattle gained play out. Denver is looking at this trade in more of a win now short term view. Problem for them though is they have a good defense, their offense is meh, and they play in a strong division. Which means their road to the SB will likely involve road games against some of the best in the AFC. Does Wilson put them over the top? Maybe, and it's a gamble. For Seattle there wasn't going to be much future with Wilson there as he wanted out, why not parley his value to build for the future. If they draft well, they could be setting themselves up with a solid core to build a winner again. At the moment I give the edge in this trade to Seattle given the potential to rebuild and get good value out of their aging star while they can. I think both teams are getting what they are looking for potentially. Win now or win later.

Looks like Nagy is back in KC as QB coach. Wonder if this is Reid doing him a favor. As I don’t see any team hiring him to work wit their QBs especially not young QBs that need to be developed. Either way, to go from HC to a position coach is quite a step down.
-
Agree and while it stinks to have good coaches poached by other teams, it means that they were successful and therefore their unit was successful. If Getsy gets this offense humming, and develops Fields, replacing that OC position suddenly becomes easier to get good replacements as quality coaches will want a part of that. Replacing an OC when the offense is putrid will attract a different kind of coach and you often go from bad OC to bad OC in part because your HC can't identify good coaches, or no good coach wants to be associated with that mess. There are also things you can do to try and retain a successful coordinator by offering a promotion like assistant HC. I'd much rather see our staff change because we are successful on field rather than because we ned a scapegoat or we've hit the reset.
-
I'd like to see us keep Monty as well, he brings more than on field production, the dude has leadership abilities and embodies the kind of character you want your team to have. He will give 100% at all times, he fits the type of player both Poles and Eberflus want on our team. I feel he's got a good chance to stick, and he may be willing to structure his contract to be team friendly to be a part of what we are trying to build here. I really do like the one two punch of Monty and Herbert.
-
I liked Lovie and he for sure was the best HC we had since Ditka. If I remember right part of his downfall was he sought more control over the roster and we made some bad moves as a result. The record the prior year I think was a little misleading and masked some of the issues I think that led to him being let go. Still didn't make for a good look the way it went down. I wish Lovie the best unless he plays the Bears.

Given what Poles talked about in his presser about his draft and FA philosophy. He wants to be smart with our FA acquisitions and will evaluate the various waves or tiers at each position and look for value vs having to waste money and draft capitol to acquire guys to make up for poor drafting. I don't see him making big FA splashes often. So with our cap situation I see Robinson walking (doubt he'd come back even if we had the money and wanted him). I don't see Adams coming here. I like Godwin and Williams but they may be too pricey. I don't want the head cases like Brown or OBJ. I could see us going after guys like Schuster, Kirk, Chark, Crowder, Pascal, Zay Jones, Pringle, Gage, MVS (though he has trouble with drops at times), Watkins, etc. We could possibly shop some guys and see if we could get a good WR back. Draft wise he talked about maximizing draft value so I don't see him handing out draft capitol like candy like Pace did. So while I like the idea of Olave we'd have to move into the first round to get him. I don't see him dealing capitol to do that but if we could work some trades to add the draft capitol needed to acquire a first rounder high enough to get him. That's the only way I see it happening as I don't see him falling into the 2nd let alone where we pick. I haven't don't much research into the WR draft class outside of the names everyone knows. I like that Poles wants to be smart with FA signings, maximize draft capitol. I feel like Pace so often made reactionary moves whether it was in the draft or FA, to fix poor drafting or other bad moves. He was always borrowing from the future to attempt to fix the present, and it always catches up to you. Whoever we go after I'd like to see us go for consistency rather than flash or big name. Fields is going to need receivers he can trust to run good routes and be where he expects them to be. Speed and ability to get separation are important qualities to take advantage of his deep ball skills.
-
Sounds like there's nothing to the rumors was hoping it was true would have been funny. Would have been even funnier if he were to get hired to be the Packers OC. They would go from one of the top offenses all the way to the bottom and start digging.
-
What he's alleging that they were openly wanting the team to lose and even potentially offering to monitze losing, reminds me of the plot of Major League where the owner purposely assembling a team so bad they would finish dead last so she could relocate the team.
