The problem is there is no clear cut answer. What decisions at the end of the year gives us the best chance at winning next year? Poles will need to show a big step forward to keep his job. It could be as simple as better coaching and 2 blue chip players added in the draft. Plus a vet center and pass rusher, we have the money for that.

Poles has 3 options: Bagent if he shows he can play Fields with a 6 mil pay next year Draft a rookie that has a cheap deal for 4 years If Bagent balls out and Fields plays well for X number of games then what gives us the best chance to win next year? Keeping them both next year may be the answer. That also will mean we will win some more games this season and have a lower pick in the draft. Draft a pass rusher and OT , or Harrison? If we trade the first pick, he will have 2 more high picks in two years. In Poles third yr pressure will be on him to win. What's his best choice?

What happens with the OL? The bad snaps is a problem, do we give a true OC the starting job, Doug Kramer? I think Whitehair wont be there again, it may be Patrick. Carter has played well so even with the Davis injury we have that covered. The key to the line is when Jones comes back. Hopefully this week. With our first two picks in the draft, probably should be a pass rusher and a OT, but the QB question will make that a QB. I think the other pick will be a pass rusher, 2nd round needs to be a OC.

That may be more of an accurate prediction than you realize.

Its a catch 22 situation, if he balls out his trade value goes up but also the chance we keep him.

I think no matter how much I wanted Fields to succeed, I think the injury has sealed his fate. If he balls out when he comes back it will only increase his trade value. Poles is looking at the future of the team and just wont have enough trust in Fields to not look at the 50 mil he would have to pay him in the 2025. I wish it was different but I think Poles will make us a winner , it just will be 2024 or 25. A new coach will have input in who is QB, will he love Fields or a rookie? His best decision may be to tailor an offense to make Fields the best he can be instead of going thru the growing pains of a rookie. Lots of questions going forward.

As much as we are losers, we were very close to beating both Broncos and Vikings .The defense is starting to get better. We had our best 2 RBs out that would have totally changed the outcome of the game. If you take out Jackson and Whitehair, we are the youngest roster in the league. The problem is the bad play calling isnt going to go away. Hopefully Getsy makes it simpler for Bagent to allow him to be the best he can be . In the Washington game he rolled the pocket out 7 times against Minny he did it once. He got stuck on thinking we were better than we were. Fields was under duress all day and is now injured. I would love us to win all the games going forward but between our injuries and the same coaches will will find ways to lose. The light at the end of the tunnel will be the top 2 picks in the draft and 111 mil cap space. If that happens the coaching staff will be fired and probably a new QB. Hard to say right now if we win more games next year because of that but it changes our hope for the future. Fields will be back (as of now) so we get to see what Bagent can do and still have some games to evaluate both. That is a blessing in disguise for us to be able to know what we have. I am one of the only posters on here that thought we could have a winning record (misguided optimist). the truth is 1 and 1/2 years into a complete rebuild that wasnt going to happen.

Why trade him if he brings no value? He still has a chance to play at least 5 games. That may up his value.
-
Next year if you cut Whitehair pre June and Jackson post June 1, it cost you 8 mil in dead cap but saves you 24.5 mil in cap space .Both have tapered off and we already have 111 mil.

Absolutely, its not an easy process and good GMs screw up all the time, the key is to get more good than bad.

When we assess this year we have to consider injuries have affected our win total. DBs are coming back and the defense is starting to play better. The OL has been a mess due to injuries. Jones has been out, Jenkins just came back, and Davis starts playing well , injured. Whitehair had to play guard and goes back to OC , with issues. His problem was his injured hand and not sure that isnt still effecting his snaps. The original starting 5 looks like that would have been good but hard to go 8-9 deep in the OL with good depth in a second year of a rebuild. Hard to correct that problem in season. The only way to compensate is with play calling and we can see that's not helping. Injuries are part of football but we need at least one more year to build the roster. We have a great cap space and 2 1st round picks to correct that. If Jones doesnt come back , we have to draft a OT, probably a QB. That eliminates an edge rusher and Harrison as choices in the first round. Maybe Poles can do magic 2 years in a row and gets us extra picks for one of those high picks.

I dont think Fields is great but he is here for the rest of this year so I try to find reasons to support him. My argument has always been that this year will determine his future. Even with the injury, he still has some games to play. Im just not writing him off when you have an inconsistent play caller and a line that doesnt give him time to succeed. He is a hard worker, tough competitor, best running QB in the league. He was given DJ this year and it has helped in his development. Yes your criticism has merit, if he cant correct that, he's not a franchise QB but the year isnt over with yet. His first year with Nagy was a disaster so I so i dont even count that year as development. I look at him as in his second year and am finding out the play calling isnt helping him succeed .Even though he played bad defenses, Getsy had a moving pocket, gave him any RPOs to run. Instead of establishing the run and giving him play action , he sets him in the pocket to get hammered from a team that blitzed 71% of the time. Bagent comes in in the same scenario but was given quick throws, to 3 steps and throw, any time he took longer , he made mistakes, fumble and interception. Fields deserves blame for bad play but play calling and OL did not do him any favors. Several QBs had bad days on Sunday, Allen, Hurts, Purdy, Fields was not alone.

If they change coaches, not sure Warren is a Harbaugh fan. they clashed a few times when Warren was the Big 10 leader.
-
I'm just curious how the team would react if Fields plays OK but doesn't ball out when he plays again. He is clearly a leader and has relationships with players that are going to still be here. Then Poles gets rid of him and drafts another QB?
-
Anyone that would trade Mahomes for Fields would have to be a complete idiot. Suggestion that I would do that isn't exactly a compliment. But okay.
-
Brock Purdy was the last pick in the draft seems like he should have been at least a mid round pick. Football is kinda weird that way.
-
If we get another coach he will be having some input into that choice. You think Lincoln Riley wants a pro job?
-
I just react to comments you make and then you start bashing men. If you keep going there, I will follow. You make this stupid comment over me posting some. stats (If you truly mean what youre saying, then youre saying if you were Chiefs GM, youd trade Mahomes for Fields?)
-
This may be a plus plus for the team to be able to get 3 or 4 games to evaluate Bagent and still get enough games to still look at Fields. Getsy will keep it simple for Bagent to be able to let him succeed.
-
For all accounts he is just doing advance scouting and does data work reporting to Flus. Flus is overloaded and trying to figure it out. With all that said the defense played well this week. The week before our game Minny played KC scored 20 points and 329 total yards while JJ went out early in that game.

So you mean someone like Sean Payton or Bill Bellchick? Or a great offensive mind Brian DaBoll.

5 games is not enough time to judge a player in this season when he will have at least 5 more games to look at him. The whole purpose of this year was to see if Fields is our long term answer and the injury will confuse that judgement. No intelligent GM is going to say (, we dont need to see anymore and blow off the rest of the year.) Why would they? The rest of the year will determine his fate. Let's say, he thinks like you and thinks he is terrible and trades him in two weeks, for a 5th or 6th round pick.(injured QB) Then he goes to Atlanta and balls out for the last 5 games. That would tell us how stupid Poles may actually be. The stats only show he is not as terrible as some people suggest because he has similar stats as the best QB in the league. That doesnt make him great but at least deserving of the rest of the year to judge him. Truthfully the injury has already probably sealed his fate. Poles has to judge what his best option is and that includes the rest of this year. The rest of the year will also determine who the best QB in college is, it may not be Caleb Williams. I'm still trying to figure out how you read my mind and knew I would trade for Fields if I were the Chiefs GM. Those are very private thoughts.

After all this (kill the QB ) speak yesterday , I see Swifty post this on X .I was buying into the( its over) narrative but its actually not. Worse case he has 5 more games to prove his worth. Poles keep listening to fans last year (didnt get him weapons) and makes an in season trade for Claypool . That was his mistake to listen to fans, he just needs to wait until the end of year and make an intelligent decision. Swift Sports Network @SwiftyNetwork ยท 2h 2023 Season Stats: Justin Fields 12 TD, 6 INT, 95.4 Rating, 1,201 passing yards Patrick Mahomes 11 TD, 5 INT, 96 Rating, 1,287 passing yards

Injury history and age always comes into play. The winner could be Drake Maye from Duke. No one knows yet.
