Official NFL Draft Day Thread
Seriously they could have taken WR's with there first two picks and I wouldn't have faulted them. They have an absolute horrid WR core, for cripes sake Gage/Wade are two of there best.

Official Mock Draft Thread
With no good trade offers, the Raiders make the only logical selection....drafting Jamarcus Russel, QB, LSU...the Detroit Lions are now on the clock. Other players considered, Joey Thomas, but after the Gallery disaster Al Davis did not allow me to pull the trick on another tackle. I also strongly considered Adrian Peterson but franchise backs are a thing of the past in this gm's eyes.

Mock Draft Trade/Pick Talk
Out of curiosity when does the draft start (so I know when I need to make my pick). And yes my pick is up for trade. Yes.

Bears Franchise Briggs
Last I remember is that he was asking for Urlacher type money which would be more like 40 - 50 million.

Rivera's Contract Not Renewed
This is a tough move. On one hand Rivera was going to be long gone and I think Babich is the guy Lovie wants for the job and I don't think our defense will miss a beat without Rivera (however, other injuries or other things could effect it). That said from the outside perspective I wonder if other coaches will look at this and say hey why would I come to the Bears when they treat there coaches like this or like that. Either way I am going to say that I think this is definitely the best move for the long term future of the club since we should have some stability at the DC position for the next few years under Babich and with Rivera we probably wouldn't have.

Will the Bears Miss Ron Rivera?
It doesn't make sense. He's a 4-3 guy and they run the 3-4. Although if Rivera came in and had a candidate in mind to run a 3-4 I guess it would work. Seems odd though.

Tomorrow/Tuesday on Cold pizza
Doh, I wish I would have caught this. I had to get to work extra early this morning so I didn't get to watch the first half hour of Cold Pizza like I usually do.

TalkBears Mock Draft
Awesome, count me in.

Cato June
Edwards wouldn't be getting cut but apparently the Chargers have already told him they will not be resigning him. Edwards also said he would not be coming back to the Chargers.

Not only will it do that, but it will at least give the Bears some options if we do in fact lose Briggs (for draft picks of course).

Outstanding Article on What Rex Needs to do
This article was one of the best I've seen in a long time. It talks about Grossman and the developments he needs to make and I think for the most part the author and the quotes are spot on.

Devin Hester
In reality we didn't though. A CB with his technique would never have went on the first day. He went when he did because of his special teams ability and lucky for us he panned out with that in his first year. I don't know if we can truly rely on him to continue to be such a dominate return man but I do think he'll continue to make the opposition really strategize with our kicking game. Still for Hester to be completely worth it, he'll need to turn into at least a nickel CB and a good one. For him to turn into a bargain/steal, he'll have to develop into a #2 CB with big play capabilities. He has the tools to do that.

Franchise Tag
Hutchinson wasn't franchised. He was actually given the transitional tag or something along those lines that basically enables the team to match any contract. The Vikings put some ridiculous poison pills in it though that would make it pretty much impossible to match the Vikings offer. I do recall a few franchised players getting dealt and I think you can deal them for less than the 2 first round picks but if a team flat out wants to sign our guy (and not negotiate with the Bears for draft picks) than they would give up there first 2 first round picks they have (this years and next years most likely).

Briggs Skipping Pro Bowl
Hesters return was absolutely amazing though.

Ian Scott
It is going to be tough to keep Scott. He can go elsehwere and be a full time starter while with the Bears he'll likely be behind Tank and Tommie (if they are both healthy and sane). We also have Dutsy back. Scott is our best run stuffing DT but he's good enough to start for a number of teams and I think this is his situation to get a nice pay check (nothing huge) and get him enough money so that he can have a good life if he is wise with his money. My guess is barring some set backs with Dusty/Tommie/Tank we'll probably end up drafting another DT to join that crew.

David Carr?
Wow that would be a shocker to me. Harrington did a pretty good job at the helm for the Dolphins. He wasn't great but he wasn't horrible (sans a game or two). I guess it will be Daunte or that young QB they were playing late last season in Miami.
-
Devin Hester
He also never focused on one position in college. They threw him everywhere becuase of his athletism and while it was great for Miami it is bad for the team that got him. Because of that he's very raw and wasn't able to develop his techniques in college so he'll have to start from the fundementals up at the CB position at the NFL level. I think he's still a few years off, but he has the ability to be a very good CB although right now you'd be hard pressed to find a worse corner in the entire NFL.

The Chargers are apparently going to let Donnie Edwards go. He could be a solid replacement for Briggs.

Bears bashing boggles the mind
I think I can call myself a disgruntled Bears fan. Not because of the Bears but because of all the crap I've heard, now I'm always on the attack when people say crap cause I'm so sick of it. That doens't mean I didn't love this season, because this was an amazing season, just not as amazing as I feel next season will be

Bears 2007 opponents
I'd imagine we will finish the season with as difficult of a non divisional schedule as any team in the country. At lesat we get Dallas, New York, Denver, KC and New Orleans at home and I'm definitely going to try and make it to the Charger game, maybe even the Raider one (depending on my work schedule). Philly, San Diego, Seattle, New York Giants, Denver, KC, New Orleans, Dallas are all teams that I'd expect to be in the thick of things for the playoffs so basically we have no cupcakes aside from the Raiders. Washington isn't good but they aren't terrible either, imo. We will definitely earn a playoff birth if we get in next year (and I still think we are fully capable of doing that) but our divisional games are going to be huge becuase we can't afford to lose games to the Packers/Lions/Vikings.

Good Grossman Comparison...
They also played in systems that were wide open pass happy offenses that are not exactly considered pro-style offenses. I think those are solid comparisons with the difference being Brees had better footwork while Grossman has the better arm. Yep, Brees has excellent footwork and pocket presence. I don't think Rex's will ever be that good (pocket presence/footwork) but he should continue to learn and improve and I'm hoping that after having a full season where he stayed healthy and got to play he'll be able to work on getting a little more quick and at the same time he'll mentally be ready/more willing to move in the pocket and ocassionally step up and take off (just slide before taking the big whack). You can't tell me that Phillip Rivers is a guarantee or that Steve "Brittle" McNair isn't a concern. New Orleans now has Brees coming suffering a second significant arm injury (although this one will only sideline him two months. I buy New England and the Patriots but other teams have question-marks too, albeit sans San Diego the other teams guys when healthy are better than Rex at this point.

Mock Draft Summary Thread
Ya I think Miller is a more toolsy guy which is something I like. Most places I've read have Olsen rated as the #1 TE on the board but with so many teams drafting TE's the past couple years it seems likely that one of Olsen/Miller fall to the Bears, in fact its even in the realm of possibilities that if we do target one of those guys we could trade out of the first round a few slots to a 2nd round pick and pick up an extra 3rd round pick (similar to what we did last year). I think that extra pick could come in real handy when it comes to potentially finding a backup LB that can play both MLB (if Urlacher goes down) or OLB (this is assuming Briggs comes back) and than get an extra olineman (ie draft a guard and a tackle) plus of course find a safety and a TE.

Bears 23 Million Under the Cap
I think right now everyone is speculating. I know usually you have a few different numbers come out and its based on what certain people are estimating that the NFL sets the cap at. In addition, some sites will list the amount the team is under salary while others subtract out the rookie cap and give you an amount that the team actually has available to give to non draft picks (since usually at least 5 mill or so goes to draft picks).
