I got work early tomorrow so I won't be able to post this then: Let's get a W tomorrow. Let's knock 'em around like we did Atlanta a few years back at night in similar weather (this game will about 15 degrees colder, though). I get off at 5 so I'll be on here at the end of quarters or at halftime to give my input. BTW- for the SOB's who are going tomorrow: stay warm. It's going to be brutal.

Noots’ Notes-Game 16: 31-24 Loss at Houston By Michael Nudo The Bears (9-7) saw their playoff hopes go down the drain as the Houston Texans (8-8) exposed the weaknesses in the Bears’ defense 31-24. The pivotal sequence was a blown coverage by Danieal Manning for a touchdown followed by Manning’s fumble of the ensuing kickoff. The Bears were unable to cling to an early 10-0 lead. The Texans wanted it more than the Bears (AP Photo/Dave Einsel). OFFENSE Quarterback Kyle Orton (22-37-244, 2 TD, 2/2, TD) finished the season on a positive note. This wasn’t by any means a great performance but it was pretty good, and had few mistakes. Most importan…

LOVIE SMITH CHICAGO BEARS Considering most league observers predicted before the season that the Bears would be hard-pressed to crack the .500 mark, Smith deserves an above-average grade. Often criticized for his bland, low-key demeanor, he deserves credit for keeping his team fired up during its last-ditch drive to make the playoffs. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner has done a nice job this season handling a unit with limited resources, and a strong case could be made for Dave Toub as the league's best special-teams coach. But the late breakdowns by Bob Babich's uneven defense in losses to the Panthers, Buccaneers, and Falcons were inexcusable. Grade: B-mi…

Looking at the way this team has evolved the last 5 seasons, I feel it is in a transition phase. The transition phase is both mental and physical. The mental side of the coin belongs to the defense. I see a defense that is no longer willing to impose its will on the other team. It used to be the other team would choke, kowing we were going to make the play that would beat them. Now, we are reduced to the QB in the opposing huddle saying, "we got this". Our veterens need to step up and become what they once were. If you look at the ages of our highly paid vets, they are far from through physically. The key to our staff and players is finding a way to get that…

  6. LOVIE TAKES OVER THE BEARS’ DEFENSE Posted by Mike Florio on January 14, 2009, 11:45 a.m. When former Lions coach Rod Marinelli was sniffing around Halas Hall a couple of weeks ago, some folks thought that Bears defensive coordinator Bob Babich might be in trouble. In the end, Marinelli signed on to coach the defensive line, and Babich kept his job. But Babich is losing his juice. On Tuesday, coach Lovie Smith said that he’ll take over the team’s play-calling duties. “There are a lot of offensive coaches in the league that call plays and do a little bit more on their side of the ball where their expertise is,” Smith said, via the Chicago Tribune. “F…

Kyle Orton sounded unconcerned in his first public comments since GM Jerry Angelo indicated he may bring in another QB, calling the position the team's "Achilles heel" under his watch. "I really just don't have any comment on it," Orton said. "I actually haven't talked to [him] or anything like that, so it really doesn't have any bearing on me." According to a gossip column in the NY Daily News, Matt Cassel was urinated on in the bathroom during the Super Bowl. An intoxicated man allegedly tried to cut in front of Cassel at the Raymond James Stadium urinals. After Cassel told the drunk to wait his turn, the man "barged in and proceeded to purposefully pee direct…

I knocked on the office door, and the old man answered. He was hunched over, with sunken eyes and brown skin that looked weathered. He wore a blue Members Only jacket, denim jeans and white Reebok sneakers. When he walked, his feet shuffled, reminding me of my 83-year-old grandmother making her way through her Florida assisted living community. The date was Feb. 15, 1999, and I was visiting a suburban Chicago office complex to meet Walter Payton, the Bears' Hall of Fame running back who had recently announced that he was suffering from primary sclerosing chonlangitis, a rare (and deadly) liver disease. I was assigned the piece by Sports Illustrated, whic…

The college all-star games have come and gone, and NFL prospects and teams are looking toward the upcoming combine. Individual workouts and combine showings certainly will affect the stock of many top prospects over the next few weeks, but enough questions have been answered for Scouts Inc. to present its first two-round mock draft of 2009. Here's how we see things shaking down at this point: Note: * denotes junior; ** denotes draft-eligible third-year sophomore 1. Detroit Lions (Record: 0-16): Matthew Stafford*, QB, Georgia Yes, his inconsistency can be frustrating, his footwork needs polishing and he must learn to take some heat off his fastball whe…

Why are we wanting to keep Hamilton again, I understand Roach but Hamilton? Bears | Roach, Hamilton expected to receive offers Mon, 16 Feb 2009 22:53:19 -0800 Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears LB Nick Roach and CB Marcus Hamilton are expected to receive offers to remain with the team. Players are dropping like flies, but fortunately not people we were chasing. We need to add a free safety even if we draft one in the first three rounds. We have no depth there. Phillips is still out there, the best rated among the free agent safeties. Also Sean Jones has got some good reviews which has to be better than what we have. Phillips has been a SS but has played the free safety when he first got in the league. The problem is these guys will be gone if Jerry GM is waiting to get a good money deal from them two. Also do you think we could bring some CBs in and move them or Graham to FS? Bodden/Lions, Bartell/Rams or McFadden/Pitsb are still out there to be had. …

  14. Chicago Bears Quarterbacks 1979-2008 by Roy Taylor © 2007 By popular demand, I had to update this article to reflect changes in 2008. I certainly wish we were talking about Rex Grossman having success as a 16-game starter in 2007, leading the Bears to another Super Bowl, but as we all know the situation has been far from that. The Chicago Bears have now changed their starting quarterback 42 times since 1992, by my count. We've had a lot of questions here on the number of starting quarterbacks the Bears have had, mainly since Brett Favre's reign of terror began. We'll do that one better and go back to 1979 in chronological order. Why 1979? Surely the story goes…

He's having us getting a 4th for Berrian (maybe a third) and 2 7th rounders for Gilmore and Ayanbadejo. If we trade down I think we only have two possible partners. The Giants have 29-----------45----------60. They need a WR, OLB, and another RB add to the mix. Would they want a WR that would be there at 18 enough to give back 29 and 60 for? The Patriots have 23----------34--------47 They need to add a couple of young LBs to help Mayo. Vrabel gone and Bruschi will turn 36. Would they give us 23 and 60 if Cushing or Maualuga drops to us would they pull the trigger?

Gosh, I feel like I just posted this a week ago, and here I am posting it again? I must need to quit drinking or something. By Brad Biggson March 16, 2009 12:21 AM | Permalink | Comments (14) | TrackBacks (0) With John St. Clair visiting the Cleveland Browns today it forces us to pose the question, what's next? If St. Clair signs with the Browns or another team, the already changing Bears' offensive line has another major question to answer--who plays right tackle? General manager Jerry Angelo could draft a tackle in the first round with the 18th pick and plan on plugging him in there from Day 1. He tried that last season and that didn't work so well with Chris Williams, although by all accounts he will be ready to go as the starting left tackle when minicamp opens Tuesday. T…
