Dan Durkin reported that Smith's value increased since Cobb is off the market. Smith is the only real "stretch the field" free agent WR available. We really need to add two starting caliber WR's. One to replace Marshall and one for the #3 spot we were never able to successfully fill last season.

I feel like Greg Hardy is coming to Chicago. I have no reason to think that other than the fact that John Fox drafted him.
-
How is it you've been on here longer than anyone else, yet you only have 250 posts in 9 years? But I digress, did you think Cobb was worth more than 4/40? I thought less. With Rogers the Packers seem to replace WR's with no problem.

Youth movement? What youth movement? We have to have some youth to have movement. I'm guessing Tillman would sign for one year 1.5 million. We need competent football players. He needs a team.
-
I wouldn't say that's true with most cases. We can sit here and say, "Well it was only a million dollars more." Just ask yourself this: What would you do for one million $$$. Especially when you are in your 20's and your at the height of your earning power. Lots of guys do sacrifice money for situation. We saw it with the Black Unicorn's brother in Seattle. And good for him. He was rewarded with a return trip to the Super Bowl. As opposed to being with the Bears where he would have been rewarded with stupidity.
-
Holy shit that surprises me. He got Brandon Marshall money. And it's being reported he turned down better offers. Holy shit.
-
In Fangio's system, he really utilizes interchangeable safeties. Lovie always said he did, but more often than not, he didn't utilize them that way. For the past two seasons, teams scored on us so easily, I often wondered if we were playing any safeties at all. That being said, how about Peanut as the nickel back? Let him play in space and get him off the field once in a while. Would that be good? This is assuming that Tim Jennings is still worth a damn.
-
Why not just trade the 5th round pick we got for BM and get Johnny Football. He was a #1 last year. I just cringe at drafting QB's. Unless they are a legit top of the line pocket passer like Andrew Luck, it's a damn crap shoot.
-
It's reported he got 4 years 16 million. The Bears were not going to sign him for that much.
-
That would be a solid signing for the Bears. He's a better cover safety than an inside the box safety. We could lament on the fact we could have drafted Searcy in 2011 and took Conte a few spots earlier. That being said, is Rex Ryan really going to let him walk?
-
I hate the mentoring idea. If signed, Tillman's goal would be to lead by example and to bust his ass to not lose playing time to either of them. Maybe he shares his ball punch technique. that's about it.
-
Agreed. In 2005 and 2006, I'd say the leaders were Mike Brown in the secondary, Urlacher, and Tommie Harris. Mike Brown was always injured, but he was the best player in the secondary when he was on the field.
-
I keep hearing the Bears will be players for Suh. Has anybody from the Chicago media reported this? I know they've said they should. I just don't see us going after him.
-
I don't even know if it would be a farewell deal. Yes, he's 34, but he's a very physical player and I could see him finishing his career as a SS.
-
Vic Fangio is the defensive leader. Otherwise, the leader on defense is typically your best defensive player, highest paid, etc. Heading into last season I'd have said Briggs, Lamarr Houston or Jared Allen. A better question is, who is our best defensive player?
-
If he's that good, why is New England letting him walk? Rule #1 in free agency: NEVER sign a player that New England lets go. I remember when we were thrilled getting Merriweather. He was a pro-bowl safety who was finally going to solidify the position. He sucked, was an idiot, and we quickly understood why the Hoody let him walk. It's unfair to compare McCourty and Merriweather, but if you're going to spend 10 million a season on a guy, he needs to be a game-changer. You can't swing and miss when spending that much money. I think we should just draft a safety in the 3rd round
-
I wonder if Peanut is still in play? Conte not returning makes sense because of his injuries and he will never live down the Randall Cobb touchdown as long as he remains in Chicago. Briggs not returning makes sense because he's old, appeared to mail it in last season, and he's never played in a 3-4 defense. Peanut has been the consummate teammate, professional, and Chicago Bear. He looked great until he got hurt and we need tons of help in the secondary. It will also be a nice bridge between the old and new regime and the Bears could show they are loyal to the guy who might be the greatest cornerback in Chicago Bears history.
-
It's a thought, but if we are going to do a 2 for 1, wouldn't we sign a safety and someone from another position? Considering we need help and starters EVERYWHERE. Not to mention on offensive, we need to add 3 WR's, a starting offensive lineman, and depth everywhere. With all these needs, hopefully we can add a safety and then hope Brock Vereen or Ryan Mundy can be ok in the other spot. Like SCS said, McCourty is a difference maker so you are ok giving him 8-10 million per year. Searcy and Moore are good players, but neither is a difference maker.

Why is it the players job? That would be nice. Except from everything we know, the coaches were totally okay with everything Brandon said or did. They may not have liked it, but they didn't do a damn thing to stop it. If the coaches advocate the behavior, how is it his teammates fault?
-
Are you serious? In 2013 he got hurt and came back fat. In 2014, he was just bad. He's not HOF consideration because he was good enough to be a pro bowler year after year, but not elite. He had some bad moments, but for the majority of his time here, he was a great player who busted his ass.
-
As per Dan Bernstein, the new regime interviewed most of the players under contract. There was no sentiment of, "We need to keep Brandon." In other words, the players hated him. Also, The Bears had a sit down meeting with Brandon Marshall and they expressed to him they did not want him to do NFL Showtime. Brandon Marshall came out of the meeting, talked about what was discussed, immediately said he wanted to do Showtime, and asked Harbaugh if he would let him do Showtime if he came to Baltimore. I've always thought the new regime would be crazy to be dump him because he makes the team better. But when he's openly defiant . . . not to mention he's pissed off ownership, he had a bad season, and he turns 31 . . . forget about it. It's great we got a 5th round pick.

Bears “exploring trade options” for wide receiver Brandon Marshall
bradjock replied to madlithuanian's topic in Bearstalk
I'm with you. Not to mention, part of what makes getting rid of him seem ok hinges on Alshon Jeffery being a top WR. Is he? He looked awesome in 2013 when teams were focusing on BM. In 2014, in a pass happy offense, he put up 1100+ yards with 10 TD. That's pretty damn good except I'll bet half of it was in garbage time when we were losing 75-3. That being said, it seems the new regime is intent on getting rid of BM and he seems to know it. I wonder how much of that has to do with the staff wanting to get him away from Cutler. -

I just hope we trade him to a team that sucks. Watch him going to New England and have 1500+ receiving yards. -
PFT reports Hartline is visiting Houston today and that the Patriots have interest. They also reported that Hartline is best used as a #3 WR. The Bears problem is that if we dump BM and sign Hartline, we have no #3 or #4 WR. We just have a lot of work to do.

They hate him in St. Louis. Last offseason, Rams fans and the St. Louis media were clamoring for the team to draft Bortles, Bridgewater, or Johnny ass-clown at the #2 spot. Instead they opted to draft OT Greg Robinson with the #2 pick with the intent of keeping Bradford healthy. Instead he blew out his knee in a pre-season game. Bradford always seems to be hurt and hasn't done much with no big wins on the resume. Rams fans would take Cutler over Bradford.
