Everyone cant always be compared to Mahomes, in that case no one would measure up. You are right this year doesnt settle anything. Poles will bring in another QB if he thinks he will be better. A rookie QB doesnt compare to Mahomes either, there is no Mahomes in this draft.
-
I didnt know that, i guess you just dont trade him or cut him for 2025.
-
You can bring back Mooney for cheap and still add a #2 in the draft. I think we will find out he has been nursing an injury along the way. He is a hard worker, a team guy and with DJ has probably lost some of his confidence.
-
Whoever Poles decides to go with, I trust him to make that decision. I agree money is a part of the recipe but that wouldnt happen until 2026. Poles is trying to make a winner and manage the future at the same time. Next year , your best option would be the upside of Fields over any rookie drafted. A rookie brings growing pains. The draftee will have a higher ceiling but not floor in 2024 and maybe 2025. Build the team ,draft a prospect and go start winning. KC did that the exact yr they drafted Mahomes, won with Smith and let Mahomes develop. Poles was there that yr and it worked out for KC and the future.

You can pickup his option and then if year 4 . a QB you drafted is doing well , you could trade him with the option money. Or after the 5th year you could tag him which would only be a 1 yr of a big payment. So you effectively have him for 3 yrs . Draft a QB prospect and you have 3 yrs to develop and still get any upside of Justin w/o making a big commitment. The great Pat Mahomes sat for a yr. Hurts barely played his first year. Herbert or Fields were not suppose to play their first yr but injuries changed that. Rodgers sat for several yrs but money has changed that now. So keep him, draft who ever you want, Fields will do well to get a big contract and you burn the candles at both ends. We can win in 2024, if you decide to pay Fields you still can. Trade the new drafted QB. Another possibility is look for a QB in 2025 to draft, when you trade pick one, you can fall into the same scenario like with Carolina. Chances are that team will have a top 5 pick in 2025. There is no urgency for a QB while Fields is still progressing and you can do it all over again in 2025.

Here is a nice article for people to use for arguing either way with the QB of the future. https://www.windycitygridiron.com/2023/12/15/24002218/chicago-bears-justin-fields-trade-pros-cons-caleb-williams-drake-maye-2024-nfl-offseason

I think there's at least 3 going top 10. Probably a few more in first round.
-
I think the Seahawks could be landing spot, they seem to be a QB away from being very good. Tomlin would figure out what to do with Justin and Pace is in Atlanta, he drafted him. Any of them would get a steal with a 3rd round pick if the GMs are right.
-
On that note, Greg Gabriel really praises Trice a lot. I like all of the first round projected edge, maybe we draft that position with our 2nd pick.
-
Especially since they have a top LT, edge rusher, S, CB, WR, RB, and QB. They seem to have all of the key positions covered, yet are terrible. The big darling in the coaching world was Staley a few yrs ago. With Vangio, McVay then hired to Chargers in 2021. Hailed as a progressive coach and made the playoffs in 2022. With all those mentions, he still failed terribly.

Billings is an above average NT, but I think we need to keep drafting the position. I would think Dexter grows into the 3T position, where does Zach Pickens play going forward? I would like Newton and another edge player. You seem to be more up on college players. What edge players can we get in 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounds to add outside? I view a lot of draft info but probably dont watch games as much as you. I trust your opinion.

Only 2 of those GMs said Fields was worth a 2nd round pick. So are we trading a starting QB that has upside for a 3rd? There was other later picks also mentioned, not just a 3rd.
-
Some Robinson journalist reported that 7 GMs responded back to his survey about draft Williams and trade Fields or keep Fields. All said they would trade Fields and draft Williams. 7 of 32, that settles it, we have to trade Fields, Im glad we cleared that up. Since Mahomes was drafted only 4 QBs would be considered tier 1 ;him, Jackson, Allen, Burrow. Tier2 (QBs that may become tier 1) Stroud, Lawrence, Tua, Herbert, Hurts, Purdy, Presscott Out of 71 QBs drafted only 11 are at or to become elite level in 7 yrs. Out of that 71 only 2 were drafted #1. The moral of the story is , be careful what you wish for.

Seen that but no legitimate source reported it. If true the beat writers would be all over it.
-
Agree with all of that. If Fields thrives, he is still on the team . You develop a prospect for 2 yrs. All bases covered.
-
Poles will evaluate these prospects completely and make the best decision going forward. Yes in 3 yrs you would have to pay Fields if you keep him but he has not laddered this team with big contracts. Sweat, Edmunds and DJ. (figuring Whitehair and EJAC gone), only Sweat carries a contract that will have a big dead money fix. 8 mil. Edmunds 4 mil and DJ 0. With cap money continuing going up , it wont be a problem if we pay him. If we draft Williams, his money will be 16 mil his first 2 years. Fields will earn 31 mil. The gap is not outrageous, money will not be a problem. If he thinks there is a generational QB, he will draft him . The key word is IF. Mooney has not had a good year, but he could be brought back on a cheap contract. We will probably find out he had a nagging injury but I think with all the attention DJ and Kmet gets its more of a confidence problem. As far as the draft, remember the names Malichi Corley and Xavier Legette .

Seen on X where sources (havent verified it) stated the bears offered JJ 5-93 mil contract extension.

Poles has had a few misses on picks but does well overall. At times Brisker and Gordon didn't play well but they are coming into their own. Brisker looks like a future all pro . I think Dexter and Pickens has good upside. If Dexter becomes the 3T Poles envisioned, we may have something.

One thought on a center draftee, Graham Barton played Center as a freshman and got moved to LT. He's a lower rated LT but is very strong and has a low center of gravity. He would be a sleeper pick, something Poles could surprise in a mid round. GBNdraft report has him ranked around 100 on their big board. I read a couple draft valuations and it sounded like center traits to me.

Yannick broke his ankle against Detroit.
-
I think he is trying to be more protective when he runs which isn't a bad thing.
-
Carter would have been a great pick but we needed to upgrade the OL to get a proper judgement on JF. The defense is coming along nicely with out Carter. Poles is choosing higher character guys who love football. Birsker instead of Pickens is working out. A potential all pro S over a whiny WR. He's bringing in leaders to take over the culture. This year he added Moore, Sweat, Rochon Johnson is a future leader of the team. Wright , Edmunds, Edwards , Stevenson are all lovers of the game. Poles is changing the narrative and we are now starting to see us win.

Poles isn't drafting a LT in the first round, Braxton is developing quite nicely He's still growing, next year will be much better.
