What does Poles do to make us a winning team in 2023 ?
Stinger226 replied to Stinger226's topic in Bearstalk
I think Poles does draft a OT and OC in this yrs draft. I don't think he starts all over and forgot what he did with getting Learherwood and drafting B Jones. I think he lets them play out but brings in a 3rd or 4th round pick to compete with them. Mathew Bergeron, Blake Freeland, Carter Warren. Poles thinks he's a builder of the OL so he's not putting a bunch of first rounders together, he's going to show everyone how smart he is. I have looked at a lot of drafts stuff and never seen name T'Drondre Sweat before. -
At least I didnt finish last this time. 6-8.

I too question if Andersons size will translate. 6'4/243 In reading about Anderson , when he first got to Ala, he did a 4.34 40, and 6.67 3 cone. That is absurd. Parsons 6'3/245 Von Miller 6'3/245 I dont question that anymore. There is always doubt when NFL players are taken high. The 1st round has a 50% miss rate. Not that all of them are not good but never live up to their high draft status . If Poles is good at drafting he will identify good players in other rounds, but when you have a pick that high, you need to take blue chip players. If we only drop back a few spots we can still get one of these, but if we drop pass pick 5 they will be gone. We will never be picking this high again with Fields at QB, we have to take one of Carter or Anderson. I think in FA Poles will be bringing in a good 3T (DeRon Payne). Even if we bring in a FA edge rusher none of them will be as good as Anderson projects to be. I say take Anderson, then draft a Siaki Ika or Mazi Smith to go with Payne. Try Marcus Davenport-DeRon Payne- Ika or Smith- Will Anderson. I'll take that. -
Arguably played his best game and got hurt.

Obviously the more players we bring in will make us overall better in the long run but I dont think we make it back to the top 10 for awhile so we may want to take the generational player like Anderson or Carter because we may start wining sooner than we expect. It all comes down to the progress of Fields. If he goes off next yr that will push our playoff run window sooner. Barring trades if he gives us 3 or 4 new starters in this draft with a stud defensive player, the clock will start sooner. -
The problem now is Wilson was hurt in the KC/ Denver game. Not sure how that affects them going forward. With us getting some injured players back, as long as Fields is QBing, we are capable of winning all four games, highly unlikely. For sure Minny and Detroit is beatable. Remember that Philly lost to Wash, not known as a juggernaut.

Granted Gordon has not lived up to what Brisker has done but most 2 nd round picks dont gel in their first year. Brisker playing well is not the norm for rookies. It is noticeable to me that Gordon has gotten better than from the first game. His second yr will define what he is . V Jones has not did anything but did have some injuries coming out of camp that affected his learning process. It is not common for GMs to move on from high draft picks because they did not have a good rookie yr. I look at Sanborn since he started ,leading the league in solo tackles as a UDFA as remarkable to me. I will give you B Jones has gotten a lot better at a premium position. I think as he gains strength he will end up being more than an average starter in the near future which does make that a remarkable feat also.

We have a star on offense in Fields, we need to get Carter or Anderson to energize the defense. If we only drop no lower than 5 , I think that could still happen. If you want to use other picks to add some picks, go for it but don't overlook what those two would do if we got one. -

I've been doing a lot of drafts with the PFN simulator and one draft offered me trades from 2 to 3, 3 to 5 ,5 to 11, I was still able to draft Bresee and then Wilson. Also gave me 3 extra first round picks next yr. Dreaming is lots of fun. I think Poles is always going to be a BPA drafter but if we get a DE, DT and OL in free agency, it doesn't put pressure on Poles to reach for any of those positions in the draft. B Jones and Leatherwood are going to get first shot at the Tackle spots but think he will bring another OL to compete. That's what would be great if we got Elgton Jenkins, he could play any spot where someone would falter. -
I think Poles big move for a WR was for Claypool. The only other FA WR next yr that comes close to his equal would be JuJu and Jakobi Meyers. If he wanted he could sign either one of them. The draft is still a question mark as far as who is the best WR. right now Quentin Johnston is ranked between 10-15 spot that would be available when we draft. This class is not considered strong at WR. There is only 3 with potential first round grades. Quentin Johnston, Jordon Addison, J S-N (Ohio State) Unless we trade back I dont see Poles taking a WR with our first pick, so all of them could be gone by our second pick. I think he will be adding a WR but not early in the draft. We could be looking at Mooney, Claypool, V Jones, rookie, and two of these, Pringle-Pettis-Harry-ESB as our WR group.

Interesting article. Indy is in need of a QB, right now they are the 9th spot in the draft. With their schedule, Minn, Detroit, Chargers, Hou, they still could finish in the top 10. Would you trade the 2nd pick for a top 10 pick, plus a 2nd 2023, 2nd next yr 2024 and D Buckner and Z Franklin. Buckner will be 29 at 20 mil average for the next two yrs, and Franklin (27) is making 3.4 average for the next two yrs. Alternative would be to pay DeRon Payne 15- 20 mil if he doesnt get tagged, and just resign Morrow which has TT 84 , TFL 9, 0 sacks. Alternative draft Jalen Carter and resign Morrow. What would you do? -
As of right now, Sanborn is averaging 12.1 plays a game ( TT 54. TFL 5, 2 Sacks) (5 games) Zaire Franklin (INDY) leads the league with 10.7 plays per game. TT 130, TFL 9, 1 sack Rashaan Evans leads the league in TT 134 with 5 TFL and 1 sack Roquan Smith TT 114. TFL 7., Sacks 3.5 If he started all the games he could lead the league at less than 1 mil a year. This is Poles best find of the year.

There are some OCs in FAgency . Between injuries and being bad , Patrick still may be back. If that is true then I think they draft a OC to compete with him. I made the argument for 9 new starters, you say 8. Considering the terrible pawn rush , I could see all new starters there. -
The problem is we keep losing, once we win games , everyone will take notice. When we beat NE, they started noticing, but once we started the losing streak that went away.
-
We were considered the worst offense in the league, yet we went out and lead the league is rushing and most explosive plays. Go figure
-
We will be adding in the draft and FAgency. What moves does Poles make that will give us a winning season next yr. We cant fill every spot so we figure 9 new starters. Lets say we get the 2nd pick, 56, 65, and 101. These are picks that probably will give us starters from day one. Anything in the rest of the draft will just be gravy if they end up starting. With 135 mil, in cap space, I think he makes 2 big signings, and 3 midland signings. For sake of argument we resign Monty to a 3 yr 19mil deal. I am using OTCs valuation numbers + That have Monty at 5 mil value We resign Morrow at 3/24, OTC valuation at 8 mil We bring back Armon Watts, Josh Blackwell, Harry, Matt Adams, D Evans on min deals. We bring back Blasingame, DHC, Pettis for 1-3 mil per yr. We cut Patrick and Al-Q Mum that will cost 2 mil in dead money but save us 8 mil. In free agency our signings are DeRon Payne/ 12-14 mil a yr... Elgton Jenkins/ 8-10...Marcus Davenport/ 8-10...Marcus Pocic/ 8-10...Austin Hooper/ 5-7 mil In the draft 2) Will Anderson/edge...56...R Rice/WR...65... Siaki Ika/DT...101...Devan Weatherspoon/CB The weaknesses are OL, DL and WR. OL Pocic and Jenkins will address our line. If Leatherwood proves to be worthy at RT, Jenkins can play LG and then we get rid of Whitehair. If Whitehair stays then E. Jenkins plays RT. OL B. Jones/ E. Jenkins/ Pocic/ Jenkins/ Leatherwood. WR Mooney/ Claypool/ Harry/ Pringle/ Pettis/V Jones/ Rashed Rice (Rookie) DL Payne-Watts-J Jones- Siaki Ika (rookie) Ika was there at 65 range and is a monster at 6-4 350. He is compared to Jordon Davis (6-6 340) a high level rookie Edge... Anderson/ Davenport/ Robinson/Gipson. I added another TE weapon in Austn Hooper and another CB in the mix on the D backfield.

For sake of argument, there is only 3 WRs that will end up with similar numbers. Averaging out London and he ends up with 61-690-5. That was one I didnt adjust to .Also keep in mind their is 17 games this yr and Claypool only played when there was 16 games. If you take his average that would end up 66-926=10 for the 17 games. Only 3 are similar. If you go by where Pitt gets our 2nd round pick, none of the second round even come close to his numbers. Also other reasons for him to be here now. He is still only 24 yrs old, he can get valuable playing time with Fields going into next yr. Next yr will be the true tale of this trade. Also team production has increased since he has been here. Other teams consider him a threat, Mooney and Kmet have upped their numbers since he started playing. For your argument to be formable this yrs WRs would have to produce with the best of this last yrs draft. Last yr 7 WRs had above a 8.0 rating ( bleacher report) in the draft. This yr there is only 3 . The top 3 of 2022 were London/8.8-Olave/8.7-Wilson/8.6. The top rated WR this yr is Quentin Johnson/ 8.3. Point is this class is not rated as high for WRs. The only thing that matters is Claypool productive next yr so if he does anything better than his rookie stats, it will have been successful. I'll go out on the limb and say if we kept our second round pick, Poles probably wouldnt have drafted a WR their anyways. Quentin Johnston is the only high rated WR in this draft and he will be gone in the top 15. You got me on cost and more yrs for cheap service. So if we keep our 2nd round pick (34-38) that is what we should compare to. This yr (bleacher Report ratings) 4 are expected to go in the first round. Of the rest left over, none is rated higher than a 7.7. So if we picked one with that pick , it may take a couple yrs for him to reach his peak. With Claypool, he can already bonded to Fields and I guarantee his numbers would be better than 2 nd round WR we would take with the pick we gave up. Plus, we would have to assume that is what Poles would pick with that pick.( unknown)
-
Granted it doesnt look good now because #1 we are continuing to lose games (better pick) and our passing game is not completely built yet. I think we have to wait on judgement until next yr to view the Claypool trade. If he has 72-932-6 next yr will that make it worth it? His rookie yr he was 62-873-9 . He is very capable of slight improvement and become valuable to this team. I think you could say that Claypool would be one of the best FAs is available this yr, that was something Poles had to consider. In the draft the only WR that has #1 type of traits is Quentin Johnson. There are several with potential but not a sure thing. Johnson is a consistent top 15 but rarely rated top 10. Last yr 6 WRs were taken in the first round. Only two WR will achieve as good as stats as Claypool did his rookie yr. Olave and Garret Wilson. I can understand why he did, it also helps Fields and Claypool to form a bond going into next yr and improves our overall passing game. Kmet and Mooney starting being more consistent since Claypool came here. Opposing Ds consider him a threat.

The key game left is Denver at the Rams. They are in LA, dont have anything to play for but players playing for jobs may be inspiration enough. Denver has a decent defense but chances are they lose to Rams. That leaves us tied with Denver for wins. We could win 2 games in the next 4 which would not be good. I hope Minny is in the position to have to win that will help our last game. We are in Detroit so that helps the Lions but that is a winnable game. Our D sucks so hopefully they lack improvement going forward. How would you guys feel if we won the last 4 games? Brisker and Gordon will be back, Fields is capable of blowing up any game and Herbert might be back. If we won the last 4 games that would mean the OL has improved considerably , the D found a somewhat pass rush and Sanborn keeps killing it. That would be so Bear like.
-
It would be very (Bear like) for them to go out and beat Philly. Beat the best team in the league and lose the 2nd pick slot.
-
Hard to say how they evaluate Whitehair, but Jenkins is 3 yrs younger and has position flexibility.
-
OTC has a valuation system that says 8 mil, but they are usually off by a couple mil. So 10-12 ?
-
Now to the OL: signed for next yr are Whitehair, Patrick, Jenkins, Leatherwood, Borom, B. Jones, J Carter. D Kramer. The vets, Whitehair and Patrick could both be gone and replaced with other vets. I dont see all young guys on the OL next yr. Whitehair is playing okay but not great. With his injuries this yr, he could be moved and replace with a better vet. ( Elgton Jenkins) would work just fine . Patrick can be moved with only 1.5 mil in dead money and considering he hasnt played well and the injuries, Poles may replace him with a vet and then Let Kramer back him up. Mustifer is starting to play better but could be brought back as a back up because he wouldnt cost very much. A big question mark to me. I think B. Jones has been improving and will be kept at LT. If we bring someone in like Elgton Jenkins, he can play any position on the line and could take over at LT if Jones doesnt keep progressing. Whitehair is older and expensive, but could be replaced by another vet because I dont think J Carter will be ready yet to be a starter next. I think Poles is trying to develop Carter to take over the LG spot but wont be ready yet. Patrick isnt real expensive but this yr did not do mush for his future. I think they cut him and get another vet for that spot. Kramer is signed so we will see how he develops. Tevan Jenkins is the best OL IMO. I think he only gets better. I think Leatherwood will get first shot at RT. Not sure if it works but we just dont have that answer yet. I think Borom may be kept as a backup but since they know what they have in him, they may want a rookie with more upside. Elgton Jenkins would be the perfect FA to get . He is above average, and can play any position on the line. GB will have cap problems (3.3 mil next yr) as long as Rodgers is still there and hopefully they dont tag him. If they let Whitehair and Patrick go, then bring him and a Pocic, or Boseman in to play OC. Along with the young guys this could become a strong OL. B Jones-E Jenkins-Pocic-T Jenkins-Leatherwood. as the starting line. Then draft another OT and IOL and let the line compete. Another player that he brought in that may make it on the roster is Kellen Diesch. He was projected to be a 4th or 5th round draft pick but went undrafted. He is very athletic but needs more strength, he fits the zone blocking we run right now, so I see Poles brings him back to see if he makes progress. He has short arms but is very fluid in movement. I think Poles takes a best player available approach in the draft. There is only 2 lineman that will go early in the draft, he may choose to do that, but I think he wants to build what he already started on the line. Paris Johnson and Peter Skoronski are top 15 players. I have seen then between 5-10 in many rankings but never top 5 and that is where I think we will be picking from.
-
Everyone talks about getting rid of the expensive older players but dont think Poles will do that . EJac is playing well and is a leader on the team. Next yr it will be 9.5 dead money if we trade him but if we wait until post June 1 to cut him, its 4 mil dead money. I think he is here thru 2023 until some other leaders take over as long as he is productive. This yr he was the leading vote getter at FS for the pro bowl. Tough injury for him. Another player at the end of his run will be Whitehair. He creates a big hit if cut or traded. I think he will stay for another yr as the other younger players develop. No way he has the OL without some vet leadership. Now if he signs someone like Elgton Jenkins and replaces Whitehair that may be possible but not sure there is trade value on a 31 yr old LG. It would cost some dead cap but Jenkins is going to be 28, 3 yrs younger and a better player.
