Not a doctor but from my own experience you only have surgery when the bone is displaced. So I'm assuming it's a pin/screw to be inserted and immobilize. That's a minimum of 6 weeks to get it off. At least, that was my experience.

Cutler saw a specialist today and there was no displacement of any kind or no tendons torn at all. The only reason he has to have surgery I guess is because the break is near or at the joint of the thumb. Roethlisberger's injury was near the top of the thumb around the nail so it's easier to play through.

Cutler might be back for the season or he might not. If they're 9-6 going into that Vikings game, I hope he's able to go. If they're 10-5 going into that game and they have a WC spot wrapped up, play him some to get some rust off. I'd hate to see go to New York, Dallas, or New Orleans in round 1 without a pass thrown in 7 weeks.

The best possible scenario has Cutler practicing on a limited basis the week before the GB game and then is able to give it a go in the GB game on Christmas day. I think he'll end up playing in the Minnesota game even if his injury isn't 100% healed. They'll put some sort of tape or wrap on it and Cutler will just have to make due with it.

This is whom I blame, Johnny Knox. He got sloppy on his route running and leaned too much with his body and fell PERIOD. Home field, he should know after three years how to run routes at Soldier Field. JAY just had one of his best games as a Bear and I feel he has really matured this year finally learning how to win football games despite everything else out of his control on offense regarding play calling, protection and personnel. Dude is the real deal and hope he can get back before the end of the season. We will be okay with Caleb, he is no Jon Quinn or whats his name our back up last year.

 

I expect the Bears to sweep the AFC West. Yes, Oak is athletic but they also have a lot of injuries but the Bears are a more physical and fundamentally sound unit on D and ST football team. Denver, does not scare me as the Bears have a very veteran Defense that should be able to stay disciplined against the Tebow Option. But I am pissed that I will not be able to see Cutler leading the Bears when I attend the game. Thanks Johnny Knoxville! KC is practically a bye week and I would try and rest some of the DEF Star Players as much as possible by limiting unnecessary snaps i.e Peppers, URl, Tillman and Forte. I would also like to see Bell used more to spell Forte so when we get the playoffs we will have him fresh. I hate it when they find shanks in the turf that could've injured someone. And I hate it when the turf freezes and looks like green/brown concrete in December. But I LOVE when a player comes up with a wad of sod in their facemask.

Where do you get this info? I haven't read this anywhere. In fact, I saw a whole article in the tribune talking about how the 6 week timetable is too short because when you have displacement and they alluded to the fact that Cutler did, you are talking more of an 8 week recovery (since it takes about 2 to 3 weeks to get your range of motion back).

I heard it on the radio. There was a report that said he saw a specialist yesterday and they gave the Bears a very optimistic report that he could be back possibly by the Minnesota game if not the GB game.

As smart as that may sound, management would never do that. Apparently they are very interested in picking up Josh McCown. Honestly, we need to go at worst 3-3 and i believe Hanie is capable of accomplishing that.

The Oakland, Minny games can go either way but I truly believe this team is still capable of going 11-5. This Oakland game will dictate how the rest of the season goes. If they win and go 8-3, they all but clinched a wildcard IMO.

On those you can't wait because they'll heal crooked or won't heal properly. The guy had a significant thumb injury and he's got to have the bone fixed so the bone can heal. He has no choices. The doctors have no choices. This is cut-and-dried.' Due to the specific nature of the injury, Cutler may need longer than six weeks to return to the lineup. 'It will take the bone four to six weeks to heal and he will need at least a couple of weeks to get his mobility back and be able to grip a football with that thumb even after the six weeks,' Cohen said. 'I don't know the details of the schedule, but to me the earliest possible return to play for an injury like that is closer to eight weeks.'

That's some sobering news. But, modern science is pretty amazing. I will hold hope that he'll return on the earlier side.

But either way, it doesn't mean anything really, one way or the other because the surgery itself, depending on what they do, can speed his recovery up to possible allow him to come back after 4-6 weeks.

 

Tiny metal screws and molded plates are now able to squeeze and hold tiny bone fragments together. Compresses transmit ultrasonic waves to injured areas, which some think aids in healing. New bone-building protein and plasma treatments also are said to quicken recovery.

 

The NFL source who identified Cutler's break as a Bennett's fracture said a four-week recovery might be possible. There are six weeks left in the NFL regular season.

I know. But the report of 4-6 weeks is speaking to what the specialist was so optimistic about from a few days ago, in the sense that he won't miss the entire season like all the others have been reporting.

The article about the Bears signing McCown said today that Cutler would be able to start rehabbing his thumb in a "few days". So there may be reason to be optimistic.
