This is a point to agure with the Packers, Lions and Vikings but with the Bears trading for Marshall and drafting Jeffrey and having Bennett and Hester, with Knox and Thomas we seem to have a better core of players than the other three. Now this maybe is just IMHO the start of the Bears getting back in control of the Division.

The Lions have the following players on their roster.

13 Burleson, Nate WR 6-0 198 30 10 Nevada-Reno

It will be a little hard to get past Pack, Jennings and Nelson are stars and Rodgers will be making Cobb a good WR this year. We have Marshall and Bennett, the rest remains to be seen.

The fact that we can even be discussing this topic is a credit to Emery. We have a darn good WR group now, not only a franchise QB but two backups I feel good about, and a 1 / 2 punch at RB with Forte & Bush that I love.

Now let's see if they can put the pieces together for a decent OL. If they do we could be talking a top 10 Offense. (or maybe a top 5!)

Agreed. Have we ever talked about Bears WR's as a positive factor? Even in the Gault/McKinnon days no.

THis could be exciting!

Adding BM we now have we that is better than all of the Packers wr's. Only problem is Rodgers and company have the same system and starting 5 have been in that same system for 4 to 5 years. Their timing is on point. It will take the Bears awhile to get grooved.

On paper the Bears we group could prolly beSt out everyone else especially if Knox was healthy.

The Bears have the edge in Receiver talent now but the Lions and Packers have been running a system they are familiar with for multiple seasons. That goes a long way. I want to see this team for a couple of regular season games before I anoint them ahead of those two teams in the division.

I disagree. The Packers have a better core receiver group with Jennings, Nelson, Driver, Jones, and Cobb than we do with Marshall, Bennett, Hester, Jeffery and ??????.

I think some are putting the cart before the horse with Jeffery seeing as how he hasn't played a down yet. I'm excited about his potential, but there is always at least SOME learning curve for rookie WRs.

It is exciting to have such an improved group, and it will take some time for them to gel, but it's still early days.

Driver is old and declining, so I wouldn't even consider him in this comparison. Also, Cobb is their primary Returner, he had 25 catches last year and 1 TD. That is like putting Sanz in our comparison, who had 27 catches last year.

With our running game being far superior, GB will always have bigger numbers in the passing game. However, I don't think they are as good as some make them out to be. Nelson had a great year last year, but that was his 4th year; he didn't do much before then. Jennings is their top and most consistent receiver, and I would say 1 for 1, Marshall is better. Like LT2 said, we can't annoint Jeffery without ever playing a down, though we do have high expectations of him. He seems comparable to Nelson. I would say Bennett/Hester vs Jones/Cobb/Driver is basically a wash. The top 2x WR's account for 70-80% of the receptions and yards for WR's. So I would say the Bears have the potential of having a better receiving corps.

The other aspect to this is the other parts of the passing game, TE and RB. I believe GB has the edge for TE, but we have the edge for RB. So in the end, at least we can say that the Bears are now in the discussion, and that should make other teams worried, because we were really handicapped without legit threats on the outside, and we now have a true #1 and possibly a #2.

Finley too. No way our recievers are as good yet.

You've hit on the crux of my point right there. If Jennings and Marshall both got injured, how well would the #2 for each team be able to step up and replace the production of the #1? I could see Nelson replacing Jennings' production pretty well. However, I can't see Bennett replacing Marshall's production and Jeffery is still only an unproven rookie.

If everything goes as we hope it will, we could be better after this season, but not yet.

The thread is about the best overall group of WR. Calvin is an awesome talent, but the rest of the Lion WRs are weak by comparison so they don't belong in the conversation.

got it

If we look at receiving yards last year from teams in our division

#1 Johnson

#10 Marshall (now a Bear)

#24 Harvin

#25 Jennings

#45 Pettigrew(TE)

#47 Finley(TE)

#50 Burleson

Out of the top 50 last year Detroit has more going forward. TEs have to be considered because it is part of the passing game. Also 2 of top 5 QBs last year were in our division with Rodgers and Stafford.(yards)

So going forward we only have a chance of having the best WRs in the league. Probably not, unless a lot of things go right. Granted we have a RB that catches alot over those teams which puts us closer to the other groups, but are we going to throw for 5000 yards with a some what run first mentality, I doubt it.

Completely agree. Jeffrey has potential and looks nice, but he's still a rookie that has yet to play a game.

No they don't when the subject of the thread is the WR groups. Different systems utilize different positions more. When looking just at WRs, NE would not fare as well either. But that doesn't matter when the discussion is specifically about just the wide receivers.

Your right we cant use TEs and RBs as comparing to WRS, but teams that throw a lot to TEs and RBs affect the effectiveness of WRs. So breaking down WRs is a incomplete comparision.

Det. #1 Johnson

#50 Burleson

#97 Young

GB #9 Nelson

#25 Jennings

#63 Jones

#105 Driver

#127 Cobb

Min #21 Harvin

#97Armonishado

#99 Jenkins

Chi #10 Marshall (was with Miami)

#51Knox (injury will cause him to not see the field this year)

#89 Williams (no longer with team and already forgotten)

#124 Bennett ( our presently #2 WR)

#129 Hester (currently our #4 WR)

Jeffery ( rookie and according to PFW the 7th ranked WR prospect)

# 159 Sanzi (will be cut in training camp)

#261 Weems (new player)

#335 Thomas (new player)

If we look at this from a stats point of view, we have the 2nd worst group of WRs in the conf.

Only two rookies last year had an impact A.J.Green and J. Jones, and those two were considered the best prospects to come out in several years.Green was there #1 WR in Cincy and Jones was #2 in Atlanta.

So it will be hard to project how Jeffery will have any kind of impact his first year.

I am a glass half full person, so going forward we have a run first type offense this year. We will get top 12 numbers from Marshall. I think Bennett is second on the team with with between 50 to 60 rec.-700 to750 and 4 TDS. I see Jeffery getting around 50 rec.-650 yards and 8 TDs. Forte and Davis, Rodreguz would have to come into play, but cant look at them. So from a WR point of view, I would say we are third in the league, if things are going good.

I'm staying out of the "include TE or not"-pissing match, but I would definitely like to address your rookie WR comments.

Regardless of how PFW graded these guys, and/or Jeffery, the simple fact is both of the aforementioned WRs fell into a position perfect for rookie success.

The Bengals had a garbage WR corp, and it was guaranteed that Green was going to be #1. Add in a rookie gun-slinger who they wanted to get lots of experience, and it's a recipe for rookie WR success.

As for Jones, he was virtually guaranteed success for a different reason. With a strong running game, a consistent QB, an all-pro in Roddy White, and one of the best TEs in NFL history, it wasn't like a defense could cover everyone on their team. He was single-covered almost the entire year and their offense is much better than the Bears' offense.

Expecting 50,650,8TDs from Jeffery could be possible, but I don't think it's anywhere as likely as the two used for comparison.

I wasnt saying that he will compare to them, I was using them as an example of the rookies that actually had an impact and saying it will be hard for Jeffery to get to those type of numbers. Green had over a 1000 yards and Jones almost 900.

You left the Lions second round pick Ryan Broyles off their group and prior to his injury he projected as one of the top prospects in the nation.

I'm not that worried about Broyles. WRs from spread offenses don't do too well early in their career in the NFL.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/939686-...a-major-concern

"many of those receptions were bubble screens, quick slants or other short-yardage passes?"

He hasn't been a threat all over the field and he'll find things a little bit different with NFL LBs bearing down on him on those quick slants.

That could be said for every rookie WR that runs an inside slant on thee next level but, Broyles will get to run pretty free early on because of the fact that Megatron, Burleson and Pettigrew will be on the field at the same time making he and Titus Young basically drawing the least interest when they are on the field. If he is completely recovered from his injuries he could make a slight impact for the Lions.

That is true. I expect Jeffrey to have his growing pains too as he learns to run routes he never worried about in college. I am more confident in Jeffrey's ability to go after a contested ball than I would be with Broyles. I much prefer to let Broyles try to beat us than Megatron but yes, he'll be effective for them but he's not a game changer IMO. Had they added Kendall Wright who has proven to be more of a downfield threat then I'd say we got problems.

I might have to agree to disagree on Broyles because prior to his injury he was a better prospect than Wright IMO. Broyles was more of a known prospect than Wright was in August. He is the NCAA career reception leader at 349 and played 9 games last season with 83 catches and 10 TDs with a total of 1157 yards averaging 13.9 per catch. Thats not exactly short yardage pass catching. Wright played 4 more games(13) had 25 more catches amassed 506 more yards with 4 more TDs(14) and averaged 1.5 more yards per catch but avregaed one less catch per game compared to Broyles last season. If you project Broyles numbers for the same amount of games Wright played he would have made 11 more catches 2 more total yards and the same amount of TDs. I really believe that both players are similar and we should make sure we don't go to sleep on Broyles when he is on the field.

I'm leary of nearly all rookie WR's. I don't factor Broyles at all until I see otherwise.
