I would find it hard to believe a guy with Tresstman's experience doesn't have some buddies in this league especially since Jimmy Johnson is the guy who predicted that two of his guys would get HC jobs. If he needs to dial up someone for some referrals, who better than JJ?One other thought is since it isn't a slam dunk that Marinelli might stay.Throw him a bone by bringing in his son-in law Joe Barry as LB coach(good bye Babich) to see if he will stay or see how Butch Davis feels about getting back in the league as a DC.

The fact that the Cowboys hired 72 year old Monte Kiffin that coaches the same style of defense that the Bears used during Lovie's tenure tells me that some people still believe that scheme is still effective. The current teams remaining in the playoffs gave up a minimum of 28 points. All those teams have some form of the 3-4 defense.I watched repeatedly teams isolate one of the linebackers out in coverage by using a back or TE. I'm not endorsing the cover 2 but would like a more attacking style of the 4-3 simlar to what Perry Fewell does with the Giants.

The one big positive that is coming out of all of this is the comments being made by candidates about Emery. Some going as far as to say that they have never inteviewed with someone as thorough and prepared as Emery. His attention to detail is showing. That is why I believe Tressman is the front runner because according to some of the former players he has coached he is also detail oriented about his offensive philosophy.Rumor has it that his first interview lasted several hours.I'm okay with whoever is picked with the hope that most of the defensive staff is retained.

I gotcha but I'm of the thinking that Teo is the next great MLB to come to the league and that he is a special player along the lines of Lewis,Urlacher and Willis.I truly believe he is a top 10 talent but if there is a run on another position and he drops like Hightower did I take him. I believe that Barrett Jones is the guy who will be there and I'm wondering if we should put him at center and move Garza to LG with his understudy on the roster.

BB I wasn't trying to be crass,I just really have no idea where Emery is going. He has asked for permission to interview more candidates than any of the other teams that are still trying to fill their HC position. Contrary to what happened last year I believe that Tice is still well respected as a OL coach and most feel that he is being thrown under the bus like the rest of the OCs in Lovie's tenure.Just like I didn't see Jauron or Smith coming here I believe anything could happen. As for you realistic options: Armstrong and DeCamillas Hell No,but Tressman maybe.
-
For me its Mike Tice ,how about you guys?

Jason while I don't disagree with your thinking let me throw a curve your way.Manti Teo' has a bad combine and his draft stock starts to plummet and he is sitting there at 20, do you take him or do you pick a OL that may not be worthy of that spot?

Do you think that the Bears could possibly view Johnny Knox as a speedy wr?I agree that a TE with pass catching ability is a must also but, we need more than one plus another H-back type to go with Rodriguez. It is also necessary for the Bears to find a RB that doesn't want to come off the field after a long gain. I was on board with the Bears if they decided to play hard ball with Forte on his contract and now that seems like that would have been the way to go.This team would have been fine if we could have lined up and run the ball 25 to 30 times a game. This would have kept the defense fresh and you would not have seen the obvious fatigue down the stretch that you saw.

Right me thinks Jones is the first rounder and we may need to take Bostic in round 2 because of no 3rd rounder, then everyone else inorder of what round I would take them.Like Honey Badger there is no way I would use anything earlier than a 7 on a guy who may not be able to pee clean.

It is amazing how everyone falls for all the people from the Patriot organization except the main two Brady and Belichick, who prior to Brady didn't win anything either.

I reread my post to see where I worded anything that would make you believe I believe he is the guy.If anything I hinted at Armstrong being the annual Rooney Rule candidate with no chance of getting the job.He basically is the current Greg Blache.I also said I find it hard to believe after all the things Emery said during his press conference that this guy fits that criteria. I was pointing more towards the fact that I would like Dave Toub to get a shot.

My wish list would include signing Schefler and Jake Long as UFAs, Draft OL Barrett Jones and MLB Bostic of Fla,Eric Fisher OT Central Michigan, OT Xavier Nixon Fla,Khaseem Greene OLB Rutgers,Colin Klein QB Kansas St,Tyranne Mathieu DB (None)

Chris Motenson and Adam Schefter are both reporting that the Chiefs and Andy Reid are close to a deal for him to take over the HC position with rumors that he will have a lot of control.

I watched that whole game last night and some of the penalties were just dumb. He has done a great job this season after basically having to rebuild on the fly. The thing that bothered me the most about last nights game is that the Florida players seemed more concerned with trying to jaw with the Louiville players instead of making plays.Louiville had been relegated to being a one dimentional team during the first half and he never adjusted to the Louiville passing game.I just believe that he needs a little more experience before I know just what he brings to the table as a HC.
-
That is understood and he was here on 3 staffs,Wannie Jauron and 1 year with Smith before being replaced by Toub.We have seen a large body of his work and I still don't think he is HC material. The fact that Emery knows him from these two stops doesn't convince me that a guy in the scouting department has sat and talked football with the special teams coach. If he is hiring based on acquaintances then we are in trouble.

Bruce Ariens is my top choice because if the idea is to when now then his age should not be a factor and technically he has HC experience this year filling in for Pagano for most of the season. This coordinator is a candidate for coach of the year and to me that says HC material. Tom Clements is my second choice just for his help with QB development in GB because regardless of who is calling the plays when Rogers is out injured the next guy was ready to play. Someone deserves credit for that and I believe it is him. He has the experience in a prolific offensive scheme and the fact that he is the OC for one of Jay Cutler's few NFL friends Rogers(He and Jay formed a bond when his younger brother chose to attend Vandy)and would make him more receptive to his input. Again with the age of this roster and a win now attitude his age should not matter because if guys like Billick, and Holmgren are being considered, then so should he.With Greg Jennings being a UFA after this season maybe he could help lure him here to team with Marshall and Jeffrey forming a trio that would strike fear in opponents. Perry Fewell former DB coach here has transformed Giants defense into a top notch pass rushing unit and I would love to see what he could do with the current talent on this roster.I would believe he would probably retain just about all of the defensive assistants except Babich who will probably follow Lovie wherever he lands. Dave Toub the only current staff member who has earned the right to interview for the job with his units perennially ranking in the top of the league during his tenure here. The them that I continue to stress is that the current defensive assistants be retained especially Marinelli and Hoke. Brian Kelly is the only college coach I would consider and Emery's recipe of "cinergy" would be fuffilled with this candidate and then he wouldn't have to worry about any of us caring about what kind of language he uses as long as the results lead to contending for championships. His track record on his previous stops prior to Notre Dame shows his ability to build a winner.

My only question is why is Keith Armstrong a special teams coach being considered for the HC position when you already have one of the best special teams coaches in the league under contract on staff? Well the answer is very simple. Armstrong is being scheduled to interview for quite a few of the openings in the league to satisfy the "Rooney Rule" with Ray Horton being the only other minority candidate(though qualified) of note being mentioned during this process.Armstrong while on staff here was decent but I can't see what he has done in the league to warrant a HC interview. I would not be a fan of him being hired here what so ever. One other candidate that hasn't gotten mention that is a defensive coordinator and has ties to this franchise also is the Giants Perry Fewell who has a 4-3 background and could keep some of the current players on defense to fit his scheme.

Muschamp's team didn't play with the fire and passion that he possesses. The Gators played an undisciplined and uninspired game. This IMO should take him out of the mix for an NFL HC job at this time.

CB first of all I'm not against your preference at all. I'm just hoping to open the field to the best candidate period for the team that I have invested a lot of years( Vintage 66) in.With the introduction of a lot of the teams using some college formations the transformation of a college coach on OFFENSE is not as difficult as it used to be. Just like the coaches in play who have spent years in the booth as analyst are being considered for openings now, the guys currently coaching in college now at least have tried to recruit some of the players that may be in play for teams during FA, the draft and etc.

Again I have to say this has got to be one of the most lively times posting in years. If I had to formulate a list Tom Clements would be at the top but I can't rule out bringing Holmgren in just to give the finger to the packer fans. There is an NFL films documentary about the 95 Cleveland Browns that have the names of Belichick, Ferentz, Saban and others . The packer staff headed by Holmgren that had Jauron, Reid, Gruden,Ray Rhodes and others on it . McCarthy is also starting to develop some good viable assistants with Philbin getting the Miami job and I believe Shurmer was on his staff also is why I want to at least take a look at Clements.

Just like the Marshall trade came out of no where,Emery's press conference and comment that he is going to look at a wide range of candidates including college coaches will send the media in a lot of directions and allow him to operate in the stealth manner that he prefers. I just know the candidates that are not currently coaching don't need to have permission to interview with the team.

This is a very different offseason since we haven't done this in 10 years and a lot of us were on another board so this will be probably the second consecutive very interesting offseason.
-
Emery seemed very prepared and precise in what he is trying to do so imo I will see what he is going to really do before I pass judgement or speculate. His swift movement in letting Smith go is totally not status quo for this franchise.
-
He was an NFL assistant for 10 years 1984-1994 before he got the call to be the Jets HC for a whopping 1 year. Then served as the 9ers DC 1995-1996.That imo says he had paid his dues as an NFL assistant before he got his chance.

I totally agree. Knox became attractive at the Combine because of his 40 time. The other thing we must consider is that Knox like Hester is not the most disciplined route runner. The positive in that regard is that the overrated WR coach Drake will be gone. The 2 current best WRs on this team he can't take credit for because Marshall was already developed as a true #1 and Jeffrey was a blue chip talent at So Carolina.
