  1. i really like wade phillips. i have called for him to come to chicago forever. as a head coach, no. but he has been one of the premier DC's in the nfl for decades. the bears could have and should have hired him a long, long time ago, certainly before he went to texas. but being the bears they never dreamed of it. the age is a consideration but seeing as how we are in another gm/coaching limbo yet again it might be a good hire still for the short term to right this sinking ship.
  2. a key to this type of defense, bend but don' break, is riding time. when an offense moves from one endzone to the other it takes a LOT more time and your defense is on the field for that. it wears them out much quicker during a game even when the time of possession is close. also what this bend don't break defense creates is your offense is sitting on the sidelines watching another team move down the field instead of out there scoring themselves. it limits your scoring opportunities. this is ESPECIALLY true when you do not have a high scoring offense. add to that, any three and out by your offense throws the defense into the fire without time to rest sufficiently.
  3. this scheme is what we have seen in chicago for nearly two decades. it is the same ilk as we saw from lovie smith. our db's play deep zones or backpedal at the snap beyond the markers. it is a given 5-10 yard gain with consistency that favre and rogers have exploited to ad nauseam. we have made this easy for any opposing qb's to move the ball down the field and into the redzone. the REASON we had done so well at forcing field goals rather than td's is because by the time they are backed up in the redzone they CAN'T back up or backpedal any more because they would be out of the endzone. thus no mega cushion for receivers or rb's running routes.
  4. as you can tell, mathematics is certainly not my forte'. anyone can feel free to correct any mistakes.
  5. this is old data that i compiled around 2007 and updated around 2012. it does not include any updates since that time. it was an exhausting undertaking that took a major amount of time and research. it states as i always contended, that the higher the first round picks the better chance to get quality players. jason asked for it, if this is what he was looking for here it is... ================================================================================ below are some statistics i compiled for the old board about 8 years ago and i have updated the information to date, 2012. it lists all players drafted in slots 1-20 in the first round and how they compare to obtaining a quality player drafting in these slots. feel free if you wish to copy this information for your own records but please acknowledge where you got them from as it was an incredible amount of work putting this together. thanks, Lucky Luciano my conclusions after looking at the statistics below i know i am not so sure i wouldn't consider trading up EVERY year into the top 10 if you want the odds on your side with selecting a quality player. below are some interesting facts: 1) over a 29 year period there were 580 picks in slots 1-20 2) 134 were quality picks in slots 1-10 or 23% of the players picked 3) 77 were quality picks in slots 11-20 or 13% of the players picked 4) that makes it a 10% better chance to land a better player in slots 1-10 than 11-20 in the first round. the data below reads as follows: YEAR - NUMBER OF PLAYERS FROM PICKS 1-10 - NUMBER OF PLAYERS FROM PICKS 11-20 1979 - 6 - 1 1980 - 5 - 3 1981 - 7 - 2 1982 - 5 - 2 1983 - 8 - 2 1984 - 3 - 3 * 1985 - 7 - 2 1986 - 4 - 1 1987 - 5 - 1 1988 - 6 - 7 ** 1989 - 4 - 1 1990 - 4 - 3 1991 - 3 - 0 1992 - 3 - 3 * 1993 - 5 - 1 1994 - 5 - 4 1995 - 4 - 5 ** 1996 - 5 - 2 1997 - 5 - 3 1998 - 2 - 3 ** 1999 - 7 - 2 2000 - 4 - 6 ** 2001 - 5 - 3 2002 - 3 - 3 * 2003 - 7 - 2 2004 - 5 - 4 2005 - 1 - 4 ** 2006 - 3 - 2 2007 - 3 - 2 TOTAL 134 - 77 21 out of 29 times there were MORE quality players selected 1-10 than in slots 11-20. *3 times they were even **only 5 times in 29 years were there more pro bowl/all-pro players picked in slots 11-20. i used data for 29 years from 1979 to 2007 inclusive. i did not go further than 2007 as the time frame would be not be long enough to determine any significant figures. over time some of these figures will change and have to be adjusted. i also am using figures from picks 1-20 in the first round only to determine the value of drafting in the top 10 as compared to picking in the next 10 slots. although i haven't tallied up the differences in slots 21-32 i believe the numbers would be considerably lower. anyone who feels like doing the work is welcome to dispute that statement. i went through an incredible amount of data to get these stats. all data was figured from players who had at LEAST two forms of award. EXAMPLE.. a player that had 1 pro bowl and 1 all-pro made the list, a player that was selected for 2 pro-bowls made the list, a player who was selected as all-pro (or all-nfl) twice made the list, and multiples of the above. im no math expert by any means and if anyone see's any errors post them and/or i will post the players along with data. any who want can do the math on their own as it is possible i missed someone or added one by mistake. if you find any that dont jive let me know. =========== listed below are the players that i used for the stats above from 1979 - 2007. how long did this take to compile this data you ask? days! ap = ALL-PRO pb = PRO BOWL >> << BRACKETS ARE IMPACT PLAYERS WITH MULTIPLE PRO-BOWL OR ALL-PRO STATUS. 1979 - 6 - 1 - top 5 = 3 >> 1 Tom Cousineau Bills LB Ohio State - 2 ap >> 2 Mike Bell Chiefs DE Colorado State 3 Jack Thompson Bengals QB Washington State >> 4 Dan Hampton Bears DT Arkansas - 4 pb - 1 ap<< >> 5 Jerry Butler Bills WR Clemson - 1 pb - 1 ap<< 6 Barry Krauss Colts LB Alabama >> 7 Phil Simms Giants QB Morehead State - 2 pb - 1 ap<< >> 8 Ottis Anderson Cardinals RB Miami (FL) - 2 pb - 2 ap<< 9 Al Harris Bears DE Arizona State >> 10 Keith Dorney Lions T Penn State - 1 pb - 2 ap<< -------------------------------------------------- 11 Russell Erxleben Saints K Texas 12 Charles Alexander Bengals RB LSU >> 13 Kellen Winslow Chargers TE Missouri - 5 pb - 3 ap<< 14 Marty Lyons Jets DE Alabama 15 Eddie Lee Ivery Packers RB Georgia Tech 16 Ted Brown Vikings RB North Carolina State 17 Don Smith Falcons DE Miami (FL) - 1 ap 18 Manu Tuiasosopo Seahawks DT UCLA 19 George Andrews Rams LB Nebraska 20 Willis Adams Browns WR Houston ======================================= 1980 - 5 - 3 - top 5 = 2 >> 1 Billy Sims Lions RB Oklahoma - 2 pb - 2 ap<< 2 Lam Jones Jets WR Texas >> 3 Anthony Munoz Bengals T USC - 10 pb - 11 ap<< 4 Bruce Clark Packers DT Penn State - 1 pb 5 Curtis Dickey Colts RB Texas A&M 6 Curtis Greer Cardinals DE Michigan - 1 ap >> 7 Junior Miller Falcons TE Nebraska - 2 pb<< >> 8 Mark Haynes Giants DB Colorado - 3pb - 5 ap<< 9 Doug Martin Vikings DT Washington >> 10 Jacob Green Seahawks DE Texas A&M- 2ap - 4 ap<< -------------------------------------------- 11 Brad Budde Chiefs G USC 12 Stan Brock Saints T Colorado 13 Earl Cooper 49ers RB Rice 14 Roland James Patriots DB Tennessee - 1 ap 15 Marc Wilson Raiders QB Brigham Young >> 16 Jim Ritcher Bills C North Carolina State - 2 pb - 2 ap<< 17 Johnnie Johnson Rams DB Texas - 1 ap >> 18 Art Monk Redskins WR Syracuse - 3 pb - 3 ap<< >> 19 Otis Wilson Bears LB Louisville - 1 pb - 2 ap << 20 Jim Stuckey 49ers DT Clemson ===================================================== 1981 - 7 - 2 - top 5 = 5 >> 1 George Rogers Saints RB South Carolina - 2 pb - 2 ap<< >> 2 Lawrence Taylor Giants LB North Carolina - 10 pb - 8 ap<< >> 3 Freeman McNeil Jets RB UCLA - 3 pb - 3 ap<< >> 4 Kenny Easley Seahawks DB UCLA - 5 pb - 5 ap<< >> 5 E.J. 6. here's the question i have... who is out there to replace pace that is worth firing him for? any names come to mind? we don't want to fire a gm and then hire a worse one if the talent is not out there. that is a waste of yet another 5 years. one thing for sure is that teddy boy should have been fired as pretender president of this franchise decades ago. hire someone who knows FOOTBALL to take his place. that would be a great start for turning this franchise around. then let him hire a gm and let the gm hire his own coaches. the problem is that you have to have a plan in advance to put this all in play. chicago never does.
  7. Nagy blasts Bears for SNF debacle: 'Have some personal pride' Alex Chippin Bears head coach Matt Nagy ripped his entire team Monday following Chicago's blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football. "Every freaking coach on the staff, every player better wake up and start understanding where we're at," he told reporters, via Chris Emma of 670 The Score. "Have some personal pride. Have a freaking sense of urgency. Know where we're at. … Yesterday was flat-out embarrassing and our guys know it." https://www.msn.com/en-ca/sports/nfl/nagy-blasts-bears-for-snf-debacle-have-some-personal-pride/ar-BB1buMbv?pfr=1 ================= yea, the wheels are falling off the cart.
  8. wow, what a $#it show. this defense looked like the packers were playing against an average college team. the packers could have put up 50+ if they felt the need. we play a soft zone that any team could throw a sideline pass for 8-10 yards with nobody covering within 5 -8 yards. it's a first down machine. the packers have used this pass scheme against us for over 15 years and we still can't counter it. speaking of which, there was NO pressure from out defense on the qb, NONE. he could have stood back there for a full minute without any real pressure. mack who? quinn who? trevathan? this guy is just past his prime and is no benefit to this team. against the run our D looks nonexistent. especially while hicks is out there is nothing to pressure the qb or fill up the holes for the run game. our DL and linebackers are getting blocked so far out of the play at the snap they might as well be tackling dummies. our defensive backs are nearly ALWAYS trailing the receivers by at least a yard. jackson out of position, skine out of position, fuller out of position, gipson? not sure where he was. i would like to know how johnson gets all the acclaims in the past for his play? in a quarter and a half this guy had 3 missed tackles and some poor pass defense to add to that. i have seen this guy allow as many receptions as skrine and add some PI calls to that also. he nearly does nothing against the run. a rookie that can improve and be a great player? possibly in the future. right now he looks like a 3rd round pick rookie. the only real deal i see is R. smith. he brings it even with the crap we are fielding on defense. offense? just plain offensive. mitch... well mitch seems to be mitch. i didn't watch the whole game. i stopped before halftime as i couldn't stand it any more, but he looked the same as he has ALWAYS looked. decent up to a 10 yard window. anything longer and it's pathetically the same garbage since he was a rookie. he is about half a qb. offensive line looked better than before but still a hot mess. our TE's are looking like they have no clue. our WR's continually drop passes. monty? if given a hole he is a good + RB. that rarely happens when we need it. conclusions: another season down the drain, another regime down the drain, another half decade down the drain. same ole same ole in chicago. rinse and repeat.

wims should be cut today. that is as stupid a penalty as there is. it is reminiscent of the titan defensive tackle stomping on a player a number of years ago. to top it off he wasn't happy with one punch he felt he needed TWO punches in case the ref missed the first one while standing wide open right in the middle of the field. then doing the happy dance like it was going to be called on the saints player? this put the saints in near scoring position that actually led to a score that could have been the difference in the game. just say goodbye wims we wasted a draft pick and our time coaching you. someone mentioned the timeout on third down before the half with 58 seconds left by nagy. it was yet ANOTHER stupid clock management call. what in the he!! is this guy thinking? the saints were on their own 40 yard line!! you just gave them a chance to convert a long third down with tons of time left (that you gave them) and at least score a field goal. and to that stupidity add idiocy. it's 4th down and 4 and you are on your own 20 yard line in the freakin THIRD Quarter only down by 3 and you line up like you are going to snap the freaking ball to draw them offsides??? and then you get a delay of game call which puts the punter 5 YARDS deeper in your own redzone if you don't call a timeout that wastes one of your 3 in the 3rd quarter!!! that wouldn't have fooled a farm animal into believing we were actually going to snap the ball. i am about done with this nagi crap as being a hot up and coming coach. he is more of a detriment to this team than a positive force. now, let's get to foles vs trubisky. as much as i would love for mitch to have turned out to be even a good qb it just isn't happening at this point in his career (maybe 5 or 10 years from now a different story). he is slow reading defenses, he is slow to make the quick read, he is slow releasing the ball. his passes over 15-20 yards are so far off the mark that no defense considers it a danger. in other words he is at best a ham and egger qb. foles has decent accuracy and seems to have the capability to read a defense. his release is reasonably quick and he is seeing the field to find the open receiver for the most part. his problem is two fold... escapability and arm strength. as of this point in his game, he is being mauled by defensive players because out OL is like a turnstyle. this effects BOTH mitch and foles. foles at this time is hearing footsteps behind him. that is usually because he literally is along with two or three defensive players coming around leno, massie and one of our guards right in his face. he is getting shell shocked just like cutler was because he is getting knocked down every other play. it is effecting his timing and ability to find the correct receivers. add to this the amount of drops our WR's have shown and it's a recipe for disaster which is what we are seeing. our OL can't move past the LOS and open lanes for our running game. this makes us one dimensional and our stupid coach seems to think if we keep running the same running plays it's going to work. it's raw stupidity on our coaching staff and also put it on our GM who has done NOTHING to draft good tackles in FIVE YEARS!!!! it's looking to me like yet another wasted five year program to replace pace and nagy who in my opinion would deserve it.
  10. a long while ago i did some research on all pro, pro bowl and HOF players and the order of their draft status. it clearly showed a much higher percentage of these premium players were drafted high in the first round than not. if your goal is to fill your roster with good players which may be the case in some instances (not franchise quality} then i believe your way to be one option. are there a lot of busts drafting high in your slot? yes, but your chances are much better to get that franchise player than if you trade down if that is your goal.
  11. he is a thug, a liar and a thief to start out with. when in chicago as coach he had, in my opinion, the best pitching staff in MLB and mismanaged it so badly they did nothing when they had the chance to be series contenders because of their talent. he left chicago and went to the A's with enough talent on that team that a rhesus monkey with brain damage could have won a series. add to the talent factor he condoned cheating by his players who were big time juicers to get to three series and win the series once. remember jose canseco? he then moves to st. louis and does the same thing with juicy maguire. so where really is this HOF coaching ability? this is a guy who cheated to win every accolade he has ever acquired. read the link below to understand this POS's views: https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/tony-la-russa-put-steroid-cheats-baseball-hall-fame-asterisks-article-1.1880787
  12. can ANYBODY explain to me why in god's name you would name tony la russa as your head coach??? the sox were a team on the rise with young talent and future series potential. then reinsDORK hires this decrepit 100 year old dinosaur who ran the sox into the ground in his previous tour as sox manager and skippered the juicer winning cards and A's in which he condoned and looked away while his players were cheating and stealing from their fellow athletes by pumping steroids and growth hormones into their systems. not to mention, the brave la russa threatened an elderly jimmy piersall with bodily harm together with some THUG for being piersall. reinsdork has now tainted the sox with this cheating mentality, limited free agents coming to chicago, upset half of his existing team with this choice when there were way better coaches to be signed. great choice jerry. you're just another BAD sports franchise owner in chicago. same 'ol same 'ol shite. i can't ever root for any team coached by this guy.
  13. i just don't agree with trading down very often unless the talent of the players at your draft position are repetitive for positions you are strong at. the highest quality talent with a higher potential to succeed at being more than marginally average are found in these higher rounds and trading down is limiting your ability to hit the mark. as far as the patriots go... the difference between them and 90% of the rest of the nfl is who is lining up behind center. the same can be said about the packers. if you have a franchise/HOF player at that key position he makes everyone around him offensively better. you can afford to drop down and go for quantity over quality projections with the hope one turns out the latter. it also lets you manage your cap much better (unless you are the 49ers who cheated and stole multiple superbowl wins in the 90's cheating the cap). the patriots have filled many many key spots on their team in free agency. you got top quality players willing to work at a discount for the hope of a ring. also the patriots were and are a team that will cheat to win from the top to bottom of their franchise - owners, coaches and players. you can go a long way in the nfl if you rob and steal from your peers.
  14. this is the BIGGEST problem with the league... the rules. the rules are so vague that nearly ANY call for holding or not holding is the correct call. the same goes for pass interference and personal fouls and many other rules which can also be interpreted any way an official wishes to call them. this is totally on the league and the owners. add on top of that, as you say, the quality of the officials is extremely poor as seen by the mystery pass interference call on johnson. that was one of the absolute worst calls i have ever witnessed in over 50 years of watching professional football. just ONE reason for this fiasco is that one of the richest corporations in the U.S. is so freakin CHEAP they won't hire permanent officials and rely on temporary employees to decide critical games that effect the entire league and season. what does that say for the owners and the league? that any game can be decided upon, win or lose, by a part time employee who may or may not be qualified to do his job and they have no problem with that.

For example, on the CDC site, they made the statement that they mistakenly listed 43000 deaths by covid instead of by influenza . They did not change this in the total deaths listed on their site , yet admit the mistake. As soon as a new study comes out showing a better view about the covid, they quickly call it false because it doesnt follow their narrative comparing the covid to the plague instead of the common flu of which the current data is showing. So pick a side. ok let's look at the facts you so willingly wish to portray about texas. Houston Chronicle: From Sunday to Monday, Texas cases increased by 2.14 percent, or 7,153 cases, to 341,739 cases total. An additional 64 new deaths were reported; the state's death count is now at 4,055. The state's positive test rate declined from 15.03 percent to 14.67 percent. As of Monday evening, there were 10,569 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in state hospitals. There were 11,167 beds available as well as 1,004 ICU beds available - marking the first time since July 8 that the state has had more than 1,000 empty ICU beds. https://www.chron.com/houston/article/Houston-coronavirus-updates-What-you-need-to-15422694.php summary: if someone you trusted handed you a hand gun and said it was unloaded, would you put that gun to your head and pull the trigger to confirm he hadn't made a mistake? if this were a one off then i would say do whatever you want. you want to take a 16 ft. boat out onto the sea and go fishing during a hurricane that's your business. you want to swim the english channel with rocks in your pockets, go for it. but you don't have the luxury of just putting your own life in danger however foolish. you by ignoring common sense safety endanger those around you. someone you come in contact with, even if you survive, may not. if that is the case, then isn't it common sense to err on the side caution if someones life (yours, your family or even a complete strangers) 'could' be at stake? of course it is. so why am i wasting my time arguing on here with people like you? if REAL and not imagined information on this site can save the life of ANY reader, someone in their family or even a complete stranger then i feel compelled to do so.
  17. that appears to be a bad idea at this point. so far there is no immunity to this virus according to some reports and doctors. people can catch this virus multiple times. to top this off the actual damage this virus is doing to teenagers and young people, including small children, 'can' have severe consequences in their future. it can lead into another disease for small children (can't remember which it is off hand), school age kids risk possible brain damage and so on. right now it is just an unknown what the long term consequences could be. in grown adults it could cause damage to internal organs, blood clots and so on. as we sit now this virus is rampant and unchecked. we probably need to take the financial hit and shut down again considering we squandered the initial warnings and money used to help people through this by the idiocy of most of our federal, state, and local governments and their agencies. europe has gotten this virus reasonably under control and are able to safely open up with restrictions. we are not even close. we need to leave this to the disease control professionals and doctors and stop listening to moronic politicians trying to get elected.
  18. lol, i agree. i have been commenting on this watching the games for some time. our runners don't seem to be able to figure this out and as you said it's simple sand lot football smarts. go figure.
  19. i agree, especially in today's nfl. even prior to the huge amount of expansion teams added to the nfl, the position of quarterback was lacking for high quality players. with that said it still is a travesty that the owners and the league have not addressed this problem. with an either or rule you have put way to much power into the hands of referee's and opened up the sport to the gambling faction and organized crime. add to this, you have less ability to judge a ref's work and hold him accountable if he is just plain bad at his job.
  20. i agree this happens and that is one of the downfalls in any sport. that said, there were/are review boards (i believe) that would review referee's. if there were obvious mishandling of officiating they could be demoted or just plain let go. this has been the case since the beginning of the sport. but, with the rules or lack of rules on holding or pass interference they have basically made it impossible to grade a ref on these calls as the calls are legitimate either way he calls them.
  21. this is exactly the problem with the nfl officiating. the way some rules read the refs are correct either way they make the call. this takes the win/loss out of the players hands and puts it into the refs which leads to an easy ground floor for corruption or just plain stupidity. every single play could/should be called for holding on multiple players on the offensive line. from the 80's or possibly the 90's on back there were clear cut holding parameters. now it takes a major wrestling move take down or a near jersey removal to draw the non subjective flag. the refs can flag a team at any time they choose thus dictating the flow and scoring of the game. i have seen this many times and they will usually have makeup calls or evening out of penalties later in the game for the opposing team. usually by that time the outcome of the game has been decided or at the least given one team a tremendous advantage.
  22. in this instance, hicks and trevathan were both out for the game from the start. i believe, if i remember correctly, both smith and prince were out by the 3rd qtr. and the defense was still solid. so in my opinion the need for a soft prevent was not met especially at a point it was implemented in the game. i do agree that if not going for the int it changes the game time-wise. this emphasizes the problem with mistakes in this type of defense that is implemented too early or with a small enough score that comebacks are possible.
  23. i have to respectfully disagree. it is not a question of being hard to watch or fun, it is a matter of winning or losing. we put ourselves in a position to lose this game by playing soft with enough time left to make it a possibility. 17 points with 9 minutes left in a game is not enough points to start going into a slow down or prevent offense or defense mode. we have not only seen this happen in the nfl but experienced it a number of times in chicago. all this does is make it easier for an opponent to get into scoring position in the least amount of time and close that point gap. any team with an even average qb then has that chance to not only gain confidence and momentum but put your defense at a disadvantage by keeping them on the field longer. a team with an elite qb/receiver is an even worse scenario. add to this fact, if you make a mistake and turn the ball over or lose an onside kick it compounds the disadvantage. the only time this soft prevent defense should even be considered is if you have an injury to a key player or you are 3+ scores ahead with less than three minutes left to play. one more point on this, if your opponent has bridged that point gap you have made it MUCH harder for your team to return to an attack mode mind set if need be. finally: i am no fan of playing soft zone defense as a standard practice. it keeps your defense on the field longer throughout a game and even worse, by doing so, keeps your OFFENSE off the field and limits your ability to score points.
