The Chicago Bears are on the clock! OFFSEASON OPEN THREAD!
Stinger226 replied to adam's topic in Bearstalk
We need to build depth also, bring in a vet and draft one to develop. Doubt we get the opportunity to draft JPJ, but a few intriguing prospects. I also wouldn't mine bringing in a OG that could also play center. The better we can build depth the stronger the OL is. Example: Graham Barton/ Duke is a high level prospect that can do both. Mid second round projection. -
I went to look at the odds ( draftkings) on who ends up with Justin . I was surprised to see it was the Bears. +100 Atlanta was at +140 in second. Personally I think Poles keeps Fields and takes the draft haul. ( not trying to argue that point) but I thought odds would be great going somewhere else , it's not. I'll keep track of the odds, I was going to put my money where my mouth is and bet 100 on him staying.
-
He's going to get paid, as well as Andre James from the Raiders. Connor Williams would probably be the top center but his injury won't allow him to play until midseason. The two O!in mentioned could probably be brought in on reasonable deals.
-
I just watched a video on Jaylen Wright, he has some game. Kiper picked him a sleeper pick. Barton can play both OC and OG and is a high end prospect. The only thing missing is drafting a Swing OT.
-
Here's another video showing stats on how bad our line was.
-
I'm an optimist and viewed the OL as getting better. With the injuries involved, it was terrible . Swiftly gives the stats for the line in his video. We were tied for 5 th (50) in the league in giving up sacks. Had we not had a mobile QB, that total could have been much worse. We were 26 th in the league in PBC, ( pass blocking efficiency). We had the worst PAK in the league, 60.4% of the time Fields was under pressure on passing plays. We had a mobile QB , I can't imagine what that would have been with a typical pocket passer. We were 6th in the league in false starts 24. We were tied for 4th in holding penalties. 19. All those stats show how bad we were in the passing game last year. Braxton Jones missed 6 games with injury. Jenkins missed 5 games with injury. Our center position was worst in the league with Whitehair, Feeney, and Patrick. Nate Davis missed 6 games . Darnell Wright played the whole season and had a typical rookie year. I think Poles will attack fixing the OL this off-season. We will bring in a center in FAgency and draft one. I think he drafts a Guard high to compete with our starters. I think he drafts an OT to compete and be the swing OT. We need to upgrade our depth as well as starters.

Olin Kreutz was on the SCORE today and they asked him who he would bring in at OC. He mentioned Brain Allen ( Rams cut) who if injuries were behind him would be worth looking at. Also Aaron Brewer from Titans.

The best players at the top of the draft are (minus QB) a few OTs , WRs and one TE. There are a couple of edge players that have to be taken there because they say it's a down year for DL. I think we draft 2 of the top 15 and don't vary. JPJ is a stud but don't think anyone is drafting him in the top 15. Centers rarely go early. -
I doubt you ever see a woman in a higher position of power that as assistant to positions. Like you said, how will a player respect a woman telling you to run through a wall .
-
Actually Houston as the season went on proved to have better talent than originally was projected. Their WRs showed to have a lot of talent even thou very young., have two first round OTs, a lot of quality young talent . We definitely show more talent going into next year than Houston did last year. The Stroud situation is extremely rare, Andrew Luck had a bad first year. Most QBs that don't start that first year seem to end up better overall.
-
Who do you want as a realistic addition to the WR room? I would eliminate any expensive signings thinking Poles is going go with value players after tagging JJ in free agency. I think Mike Evans , Michael Pittman, Calvin Rigley , Tee Higgins are going to be to expensive. I think Curtis Samuel would be a perfect addition. Best friends with DJ Moore, played at Ohio State ( alumni of JF) and adds speed (4.32) to the room. Should cost 10 to 12 mil . Has some rushing abilities.
-
Fields isn't a frail guy either and he's missed games every year. The whole point of the thread is IMO they will bring in a vet if Williams is the QB. Bagent would be a wonderful story but Poles has to win this year and I'm not sure he will trust Bagent as the backup. Just throwing out topics for discussion.

Actually I looked back at 2023 preseason rating on college QBs and Michael Pratt from Tulane was rated high. He's the 8 th rated QB on draft buzz website after the season. The analysis on him is with development, a Kirk Cousins type, not great but potential starter. I think there's a Brock Purdy type in this draft, no one knows which one it is? Jordon Travis Michael Pratt Spencer Rattler Joe Milton Killa, I'm listening?( I watched around 20 college games this year)
-
The Bears hired Jennifer King as the assistant RB coach. Been in the NFL a few times working for Ron Rivera at Carolina and last year at Washington. I joke but it's nice women at least get chances at becoming serious football coaches. Note: not a former player.
-
I would normally agree with you but no matter what Poles does this year, he has to win or his job is in jeopardy. Williams isn't a large man, 6' 1" 211. With his hero mentality, I could see him having a lot of injuries in his career. If he goes down for the season, are they going to trust Bagent?
-
IF we draft Caleb Williams, odds are the Bears bring in a veteran backup QB. Bagent was okay in 4 games but Getsy babied him with 250 WR screens in those games. All quick throw routes so he didn't have to hold the ball to long. I think they bring in a vet to backup Williams, so who? Here's a article giving the top 10 FA QBs. I think it will be Drew Lock who played under Waldron in Seattle last year. What say you? https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/best-free-agent-quarterbacks-in-2024-ranking-the-top-10-projected-value-team-fits/ar-BB1iBagE

Today Justin Fields was on the St Brown brothers podcast on The 33rd Team group. It will be released tomorrow on YouTube. It's an Apple podcast so I suspect if you are on Apple you can watch it today, I am not. He tells why he unfollowed the Bears on Instagram. Anyone on Apple? -

Seems like a pretty smart guy, former college QB, been doing draft coverage since 2019 and is now at ESPN. Another former player ( not NFL ) with another opinion to throw into the mix. Never heard of him before, but will start following. I like to follow former QBs for advice, Chase Daniels, The Football Scout, Dan Orlovsky, Tim Jenkins, and now Jordan Reid, all worth listening to. -

For people that love stats, this is a stats nerd that takes the time to dive deep. -
New high for you, 20 top 100 picks. How high can you go?
-
I would think this would be more prevalent in discussing than a beaten up draft a QB drama. So does anyone know if we can resign our own free agents before the official period starts? If so: Justin Jones ( had a good year) Mercedes Lewis ( great blocker) Josh Blackwell ( great STer and competent backup) I think if we bring back anyone else, it's late in the free agency period after we didn't fill a spot. Is there any rostered players that improve enough this year to fill a need? Has Elijah Hicks improved enough to take over for EJAC? What about Quindell Johnson?
-
That's your best draft. The first 4 picks are studs.
-
And a QB prospect too.
-
17 in the top 100 would put us in the SB in the next two years. I hate looking at stuff like this because I'm such a dreamer. I would take 7-8 top 100 picks.
