And their ST is more related to having horrific kicking (which I put less blame on the coach) and in theory they solved that with Matt Prater. Albeit, Prater did have two misses in his first game but he's proven to be one of the elite kickers in the game. In all other phases, they actually have a solid ST.

On an unrelated sidenote, how bad are the various reporters covering the Bears that they aren't spending more time talking about how dismal the unit is. Instead of wasting all this time complaining about Jay, we should be talking about an entire unit of the football field that has consistently performed horrifically for the past 22 games going back to the start of last season.
-
Just think about that. That is so detrimental the impact our 3rd phase is having on our team. We are giving our offense a long field to work with while giving our defense a very short field to defend. It is downright pathetic and to rank that low in both areas is just absolutely putting us in a horrendous position. You think about the slim margin of error in a few of our games and it no doubt could have been significantly different if our special teams unit was even league average.
-
No. That is just another potential excuse to give Joey D time. The penalties we have made are just absurd and Emery has focused on bringing in special teams players during his tenure here. While injuries play some factor in the deal, multiple people have indicated we run one of the most difficult and complex special teams schemes that anyone has ever seen. This is for a unit that typically will see a lot of turnover due to injuries (in the NFL every team suffers from injuries and their ST units have to deal with it). In no world should a special teams unit's schemes being excessively complex given the types of turnover that is TO BE expected in special teams. What we have seen over the past year and a half under Joey D is down right embarrassing. I am not one to throw out a lot of extremes or at least I don't believe I am, however, and to be fair I've been saying this since about week 5 of last year, but I have never seen a stupider worse ran special teams unit in my life and for a full season that was while having Devin Hester and Robbie Gould, who should make almost any special teams coach look decent. It is inexcusable how bad we are from our 3rd phase of the game and how much it kills us. We get destroyed in the field position battle week in and week out and it not only hurts our defense but it hurts our offense as well and I think it plays a large part into why we have had so many yards offensively but not as many points (as we have consistently had to work with long fields). I need both hands and probably feet to count how many times this season (through 6 weeks) that we have backed ourselves between the 0-19 yard line, often times due to us making a penalty and further negating our field position. We honestly would be a better unit if we just stood there and let the other team punt and just had one guy fair catch every time with no one trying to block. I would presume, when you add in penalty yards, we would have a net negative return yards which is just absurdly pathetic. Note: According to footballoutsiders, we are ranked 30th in average starting field position per drive (through Week 5). It will likely be worse through week 6 as our average starting field position was very poor against the Falcons. This is largely driven by our poor special teams and is kind of interesting given the fact that in the Panther game we had a couple turnovers that gave us very short fields yet we still rank this poorly. Also, from the defensive perspective, we rank 31st in average starting field position per drive. Again, much to do with our special teams unit, especially since, contrary to popular belief, we rank right around the league average in turnovers / game.

There are a lot of guys on that list that aren't near as good as Jay.
-
He has looked good in short bursts. Nice to see.

I've said all along this has been by far the best Jay has ever played the position. He has made very few mistakes in general. Still had he not made them we won, but the play calling in 2nd half of Carolina game, poor special teams, and our offensive players fumbles, our general poor field position to start most drives, and our defense have also been factors. That was most complete game of season but make no mistake, Atlanta dropped a lot of passes. All that said, I'll take it. Huge game against Miami. I'd say a must win given the looming road games against New England and GB.

What does that say about hte level of talent on our D that we lose our top 4 LB's and we play better. LOL.

Peggy Kusinski 14 mins · iOS · #Bears injury report includes: Briggs, Boggs, Bushrod, Dixon, McClellin all ruled OUT. LB Bostic & McManis Questionsble & did not practice
-
Did anybody notice that 2 straights weeks, Trestman called out Marshall.
-
Suh, along with our young DT's would be fantastic fit and depth and I'm all for spending the money. I'd also be intrigued at what safety / lb would be out there.
-
The biggest reason I have faith in Cutler is this is the first time in Chicago where Jay has had a good oline and consistent playbook and under both years under Trestman to date we've seen significant growth in the level of calmness, etc. I think at some point we'll see more of this stuff go away. I already think we've seen so many less WTF Jay throws this year then a year ago and multiple years ago, still, there have been some pretty foolish mistakes and the pick number is excasperated by at least two that were entirely on the skill position players (Marshall - 1; Bennett - 1). Take those away and you are talking about a relatively minimal number of picks and a pretty good TD / INT record, a significantly improved completion %, etc. I just don't understand how we were so conservative in the 2nd half and how we haven't gone to the deep ball more often, especially since we would seem to have set it up so nicely the past few weeks.
-
If Jeffrey wasn't healthy, why would you be running him on reverses, fake reverses and trying to get him the ball in space? Makes zero sense.
-
Play calling was brutal.
-
Rodgers is insane. People seem to not understand that. He is the best QB in the NFL and his skill set matches it. Put him against our D and we are going to have a lot of trouble. He has a hose, can run, and is extremely accurate with the ball. Oh, he's also pretty smart with it too.
-
Bears remain very secretive about the injury.
-
Agreed...the extreme quietness of it is odd, although the latest report indicated Bears don't believe it is a season long injury. However, by all accounts it was a scary injury.
-
If you notice, Jay has not publicly blamed anyone but himself in regards to throws this year. He's been a much more mature player and it really started last year after he had his child. He's doing what you want QB's to do, he still takes responsibility, regardless of the situation. In the case of Marshall, which was even more evident, he just said miscommunication and didn't put blame on Marshall or say it was his fault, just that he had to work in practice or something along those lines and get better and fix those types of issues.
-
Uh oh. Knee injury. Makes me think based upon reaction he's done for the season. We've had extremely bad luck in the injury front the past year or two.
-
More importantly, practicing is so important to ensure everyone is on the same page.
-
After that play, Bennett, immediately put his head down and he apologized for Jay about the bad route. Bennett was supposed to settle on that play, not keep going.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/footb...1001-story.html + Slausson / Garza in pads although not full participation.
-
Trestman was quoted multiple times indicating that Marshall was supposed to run a hook route and he ran a hook and go route again. Marshall even apologized to the media yesterday for ignoring them and said he has to work to get better, etc. Week 1, Bennett, while not the same quotes, had similar quotes and you could even see Bennett apologizing to Jay immediately after the pick was thrown (1 of the 2 picks in the Buffalo game). You have to watch the game. A good offense isn't all on the QB...are they a crucial part, certainly, but it isn't the only thing and its no secret the very best offenses have consistent personal and consistent systems and are able to outrefine the rest of the league because they are more synchronized, etc. This offense in general has been more synchronized then a year ago but its still growing. It is early in the 2nd season of the system.
-
Wait, we should have won this game? How? We never stopped them?
-
If not for Jay, one of the picks was on Marshall. Have you heard Trestman talk about it. He threw one pick, it happens. Big deal. Guy is on pace for 40 TD's.
