I was really thinking about the age factor of Allen and even Peppers. I looked up Reggie Whites stats, let me be clear I know he was the best to ever play DE as sacks are concerned. He played two years in the USFL and then started in the NFL. If I told you his last two years with the GB he had sacks totals of 13 and 14 you wouldn't be surprised. Right??? But then If I told you he 36 and 37 year old and it was his 15th and 16th seasons playing professional football, wouldn't you be shocked? I know I was when I read that. Some guys fall off fast once they hit a certain age. Some guys don't. Allen is still only 31 turning 32 this year. All Im hoping for is 2 years of 10 sacks a year.

I agree, stats come in handy to a certain degree. emery and company watched the game film on him, they know what they are getting. I trust Emery and company. At the End of the day if he comes in and is a great team leader/locker room vet, adds some giddy up to the D unit and puts up 10 sacks a year for the next two years I will be happy. This is a short term fix to make us as competitive as possible until they can get younger on the D. I don't care what the stats say, our D will be better with Allen. Some stats will never measure the intangibles that a guy like Allen bring. Just think about the tricks to pass rushing he can teach Houston and Young. The guy has seen it all and knows how to beat people in the passing rushing game.

If Jared can match his play of the last two years for the next two years this was a great signing in my book.

Will the Bears D be better with Allen? That is a yes, 100% fact. Can the Bears D still suck, yes but they will not suck because of Allen. Everything I have read says Jared is a great teammate. He should be a great locker room guy. I know Peppers had to go because of the contract, I still think Peppers can play at a some what high level and cutting him did hurt the D. I think a 2 year younger Allen will be an upgrade to Peppers tho. Lost Peppers added Allen. I think we got better just by the swap of these two players. By Cutting Pepper the Bears also signed Houston and Young, adding depth to a spot that was a weakness for the Bears.

When you first posted that Jared Allen was going to be a Bear, I got pumped up. Then as the days went on and there was nothing floating around that the Bears were going after him I thought it may not happen. Then it was reported that Allen was signing in SEA I was pissed. Sitting here a week after FA started I was getting pretty worried. A couple guys on here wrote to calm down there was still time. I listened and now I can say Im really excited. Tillman then gets signed which was a huge boost and now Jared Allen. Not 100% but Jared is 31, 3 years younger than Peppers. Its a 4 year deal with the option to be cut after 3. Great deal. I can totally see the Bears getting 3 solid years out of Allen. From what I read about Allen, he is a workout beast, he could still have 4 years left in his tank. All of these FA moves may not pan out, but I will say I like all of them. Emery really keeps on impressing.

Shea was really good at Boise playing the OLB in the 3-4. He can provide pressure from that position. Anything the Bears can do to get the most out of one of our 1st round picks would be great!

Sure hope it's Allen! He still has some gas left and would provide much needed leadership for a group that is suppose to be getting younger.

I have not seen what Hester got paid, but if he got 3 mill a year I do not think the Bears should have resigned him for that. Too much money for a return man.

If he's in the top 3 the Bears must have at least made an offer.

Im trying to not get my hopes up. I would love this signing. Cant they make it incentive loaded so that it doesn't count against the cap, not sure if that is possible? Or set the 2nd year to be a bigger payday so they still have room this year?

Jared Allen is gone!

I would love Jared Allen too. Hell I love watching him play already! Read an article where Melton said The Bears told him to test the market and let us know. Melton responded by saying they don't do business like that and that the Bears were never really in it. So the Bears never made an offer or had a chance to match the Cowboys offer. I would have liked Melton back but am not broken up about it. Who knows if he will have the burst he used to have after the ACL. I played college ball, blew my ACL, LCL, LCL Capsule and hamstring tendon. I lost some of my burst. I played with a bunch of guys that tore their ACL's. Some guys didn't lose a step some did. There is no guarantee he will be as quick as he was before the injury.

Not sure how I view it, ive never changed anything so whatever the default setting is, is the way I view. Where can I go to change it to see how the two are different?

Before Reading this article I would have said and have said it before on this board : JA missed way too many times in the first three rounds and did a good job in the later rounds. This article kind of confirms this. What this study really cant do is show how bad the drafting was when it comes to needs. The Oline was talked about by most fans and most talking heads, JA chose to draft other positions. He thought he could plug in some vet and get good enough out of them. It didn't work, he neglected the Oline and we saw what it did to the offense. Even to go more into it, he traded for a QB then did nothing to put player makers around him and let the O line go to shit. JA put too much faith in having a QB do it all. Our D even when great suffered because it was constantly on the field when the O would go 3 and out.

I think you are right, he wants too much money. Only thing that gives me a little hope is that the Bennett and weems cut would be done to sign him.

Put me down as a like.....really like the fact that he can play both DE and DT. Huge if we are unlucky with injuries again.

thought for sure we would have heard something by now. Either the Seahawks are not close to what Melton wants or the Cowboys are talking about doing better than the Seahawks which with the cap space problems for the Cowboys doesn't make much sense.

Hadnt even thought of the Wootton angle. I thought Izzy was better than Wootton when moved to DT.

If they are going after Izzy, may be an indicator that Melton is gone. Who knows tho
