Most so called experts said that Young was the prize in the draft last year, so what would be the conversation if Poles took Young? I suspect not good. Stroud stood out but no one expected that . Hindsight is a great view when you look for criticism. Clearly Poles thinks building a strong roster is critical for the success of any QB. In the second year we would be sitting where Carolina is right now if we took Young. If his evaluation of Williams shows some character flaws he may be trying to still upgrade the roster with a trade back. Poles took the job with a plan , yet so many people criticize him because he doesn't do what they think he should do. If he takes Williams and he fails , the same people criticising him now will be hammering him for taking the wrong QB. If Fields gets traded and flourish, he will get hammered . He doesn't win anyway he turns.

That is an interesting name. He worked with Wilson and turned around and got Gino Smith respectable.
-
When he got DJ, Wright, Stevenson, this years 1st pick and a top 40 pick next year, he wasn't taken anyone with the first pick.
-
Did he coach last year? I thought Bieniemy was the OC?

I agree, even if other teams think they stick with Fields, MHJ is a player worth a big bounty at the top. He will score another get bounty.
-
Poles said he would have to be blown away from a rookie QB to draft him. Not sure who that is or if it's back to Fields, but I trust him to make the right decision.

Been listening to radio and podcasts all day. Sports journalism are nuts. So many of them think because Poles didn't do what they wanted him to do , that it's just same old Bears. Poles is running things and Warren is his sounding board. McCaskeys turned the team over to them. Poles is doing what he planned to do. It was never a two yr plan. The offense has had problems so they'll bring new minds in to right the ship. Flus has an idea on what he wants out of the offense and the new coaches will have similar thoughts. Whether Fields or a rookie , they know what they want to do. You upgrade the roster no matter who the QB is and it will add to his success. We are a pass rusher and more depth away from a top 5 D. Poles will address the offense with more draft picks and free agents. It's either Williams or Maye, or he brings back Fields. Soon to be addressed. Anyway they go , it's an exciting time for the organization. They hired Poles to be the GM and I trust him to do the right thing whether I like it or not. I'm all in on his choices.

First and foremost , Poles didn't get to this point in time and not know what he was going to do. He knows who he wants at QB, we just don't know. The scouting staff already has evaluations of the QBs, Poles now will do the deep dive. He will pick a OC that can adjust to whoever is QB and not one that is committed to a system. When he hires the coach , he will know who the QB is . I can't believe people think they're in a room wondering what to do next.

That's funny.

If a OC doesn't get a head coaching job, you think they will not take a job? None of that's a problem, you want someone good that could be up for a HC job. You're not going to hire people on the basis ( they might not leave).

The Chicago Bears are on the clock! OFFSEASON OPEN THREAD!
Stinger226 replied to adam's topic in Bearstalk
Flus has 2 yrs left on his contract, logic says to align the contract with a new OC, but it's not necessarily going to happen. Poles has a 5 year deal, so I think they extend Flus for one year and give new coaches 3 years contracts. -
Doubt if it works that way but if Jim comes here, he clearly will have the power to hire him.

Reich was OC when Eagles won the SB. He went to Indy and had a few successful years. They have a plan, we just have to be patient and let it play out. As DBDB stated Frank wanted Stroud, so he's smart enough to give him some credit.

Fans always deal with emotion where GMs have to decide what is best for the future. I trust Poles and want to see what his plan is. If we win 9+ next year, probably have to say he knows what he's doing. If GMs reacted to fans every year, he would have a new coach every year.

We need to wait assuming a shit show is a little premature . Poles obviously has a plan.

I just posted that if you want eliminate my thread.

I seen sources that stated Getsy fired, still need to verify it but, happy if it's true.

I agree with that, they either clean house or keep everyone, I want them to bring in a new OC and thinking no one will take that job is short sighted. It's probably more of an elevation of a QB coach that want to call plays, there's 32 of them in the league, former OCs or coaches that want a second chance to prove themselves. They won't have a problem if they do that.

Hindsight is a great equalizer, at the time Watson was the prize, several experts were in on MT , only a few on Mahomes. Trying to evaluate college QBs is obviously very difficult because so many teams screw it up. College stats are nice but they are not end all for evaluating QBs , most have great stats in college. 80% of experts had Young as being better than Stroud. Going to teams with good coaches matters just as much. Had Mahomes came to the bears in 2017, he would never be this good. Listening to the radio everyone is wondering why they haven't announced why they haven't told the press that their keeping Flus. He has a contract, they don't need to tell everybody. The only announcement will be FIRED. Of which doesn't appear to be happening. If you want him fired, the writing is on the wall, he's not being fired, like it or not, Poles seems to be concentrating on building the team. He's resigning fringe players to future contracts and preparing his college evaluation. Someone stated he maybe waiting for a Harbaugh or high end signing which could happen that would take time. I have no problem with an upgrade in coaching but a reset is an admission that Poles plan is failing and I don't think he thinks that. Flus appears to be coming back.

Poles just doesn't look at things like fans do . Unless you are highly successful, you always have 1/2 the fan base that wants change. He constructed a plan to turn the franchise to winning ways, he never said that would only take 2 years. He has upgraded the roster in his first two years, and he got a 5 year contract, so he thinks it's a 5 year plan. If he thinks Flus can rally a team to a constant state of winning he's going to keep him. Remember, he hired him. It's pretty simple his plans are not complete yet.

Obviously I don't agree with most his opinions but viewing the NFL from inside the room, he was in NO and Chicago as part of the team. He shows you something we don't normally have privy to. Not a very good talker .

Those are good points that will be in Poles evaluation.

Did anyone here listen to the Josh Lucas interview on the SCORE? He was an assistant to Ryan Pace. He said if they were going to fired it will happen with in 48 hours of the end of the season. That ends tonight. He said the only way that would change was if someone they liked became available and decided to upgrade the position. Example: Vabrel got fired today and Poles wants him instead. A similar situation as the Cubs manager change. Lucas also said that fans are emotional but the relationship between Poles and Flus is a lot stronger on the inside of the room that the public doesn't see. Making it a lot harder to change. He said Poles and Flus came into the organization as first time hires and they have a bond of going through challenges together. Poles sees the team improve not the negative outlook of fans. He sees the players having Flus back which is a good trait for a coach. He ties his success with Flus success. If he fires him he sees himself as a failure. Remember he hired him. He also said he thinks there drafting Caleb Williams. Justin is a starting QB but has limited upside where Williams has a higher ceiling. Poles is not going to draft Williams if his intangibles are bad, he's a high character guy. He said they will have a private investigator check him out and one bad report kills that report. He said they may want Maybe instead because of a better investigation report but that work isn't done yet, so no one knows just yet.

It's a very odd situation but if they move on from Flus it's not because of the coaches issues. Everyone of those coaches were on the Colts together and no one got fired. What ever they did just didn't start the minute they became bear assistants. It's usually has come up before. It very could have been accepted in Indy and Poles set rules they broke and not here. That will have nothing to do with it if they fire Flus. If that was the case he would have been let go when the second coach left.

I think they do, like you said constantly creating chaos never stabilized a franchise.
