Ding Ding! B Bear and I believe that this GM has come from a team (KC) that likes to build up front first and they like receivers with size. While Emery was there they drafted SEC and ACC heavily. With Emery coming here after the season he has to have done his evaluations prior to coming here so he may have some guys he may have up his sleeve and factor in he was here early on with Lovie as coach.

Wonderlic scores are usually leaked by teams and agents depending on their agendas.

In the last couple of weeks there has been a buzz that Notre Dame safety Harrison Smith is rising up draft boards and could sneak into the first round.I say buyer beware. Since the Irish are on national TV just about every week he was not a name that I focused on when they played and he didn't do much to make me notice. This is a bad safety class IMO and I would try to selecta CB that would project to safety since this scheme needs a guy to cover deep with ball skills.Barron for sure is the best player at the position but there has been big debate for all others as to who would be the next off the board. Smith has started to emerge as the next but, I would wait and try to draft Christian Thompson of So Carolina St. who transferred from Auburn in round 4. Past experiences with this coach makes me leary of the second round pick where we have tended to draft reaches throughout the years under JA with the idea that he is supplying Lovie's schemes on offense and defense.

Is it me or does it seem that Wright fits with all the drafted and cut safeties in previous years?
-
The difference between Poe and Gilbert is that too many scouts have tabbed this guy as a first rounder.Gilbert rose up as a result of a You Tube video. As far as production on the field,33 tackles 18 solo 8 TFLs,1 sack,5 hurries, 3 pass breakups and 1 forced fumble is Poe's stats at Memphis last year and at 346 he has a nose tackle body and since he is the highest rated guy at that position his value is elevated don't be shocked if the Eagles take this guy or Carolina.

I think safety should have been included because of after Conte,Wright and Steltz there is no depth and Wright has durability issues as well as Conte.

Jones missed 5 games after suffering an injury in the teams first game. He checked out healthy at the Combine and has been rising up draft boards after more hands on workouts with pro personnel watching. The scramble to see the on-the-field performance is the same thing teams are doing for Stephen Hill,Bruce Irvin and Josh Robinson. These guys all surprised with their workouts at Indy catching teams off guard. Don't be shocked if he goes early. After Coples who has motivation questions about him he is considered the next best prospect who can also play the DE in a 3-4 scheme. Some scouts feel he could put on the weight needed to play that 5 technique and with the premium on pass rushers in the league he could be over drafted. I still believe that the Bears are hoping for Fletcher Cox to be there when they pick at 19.

I agree and it will hinge on a couple of players Gilmore and Kirkpatrick as well as pass rushers Upshaw,Perry and Mercilus. The Chargers are one team that could take Floyd and team him with Eddie Royal.

With the new kickoff rules there isn't as many opportunities(Touchbacks) and if this defense plays the way it is supposed to he will get many opportunities to return punts. To answer your question kickoff returnmen that succeed are better at hitting a hole and going where as the great punt returners are more elusive. I think Hester is better at punts but he is solid at kickoffs also. This is old news anyway since Manning and Knox have both been the the primary kickoff returners the last couple of years.

As a conspiracy theorist I could see Urlacher going to management and saying take care of Lance and Matt before me.

1. Reiff -Ferentz OL translate well in the NFL 2.Coples- this pick is made with the idea that I put him at the position he played well at as a Jr DT and now I amm really young at DT with a nice 3 man rotation with Melton ,Paea and Coples. 3 Floyd-Atlanta had Roddy White and traded up for Julio Jones we don't have to do that! 4.Fletcher Cox- The Lovie 2 needs push from the inside to succeed again pair this guy with Melton and Paea and you have some force inside. 5. Jonathan Martin- I personally like his ability and since this is my Big Board I have him as my 3rd OT. 6. David DeCastro- The fact that his face is beet-red every time he works makes him my favorite player in this draft. If we want to get tough in the interior this is the guy to take. 7. Dontari Poe- The last big man I saw that was this athletic was the Fridge. 8. Melvin Ingram- He is this far down on my list because I believe he is a better fit in a 3-4 9. Stephon Gilmore- This is a big physical corner that may allow the Bears to continue to vary from their base defense if they have another big corner that can man up. 10. Chandler Jones - This kids stock is on the rise and he is what the Bears need opposite Peppers and would also send a strong message to Wooten to stop watching his fiance's basketball games and start training to save your career. I have combined players whose stock is rising that aren't boom or bust plus players who have higher greades then our pick who have a downward buzz in draft stock.

He is the love child of Adam Pacman Jones and Shawn Kemp that has Sam Hurd on speed dial. WTBS if he falls to the 3rd or 4th I'd gamble there. At some point we have to trust the Bears lockerroom to police the rookies.
-
There's some rumors circulating that he may have failed a drug test and he has some impending sanctions coming that the GM said he was unaware of. He already has been suspended for a year for violating the league's substance abuse policy in 2010. This may be a buyer beware situation. After the Sam Hurd debacle I could see the Bears taking a pass on him.

The one guy expected to visit the Bears that would fit a JA profile is the Syracuse DE Jones who suffered a knee injury in his team's season opener. He missed 5 games and apparently has a clean bill of health. With Wooten already a perrenial training room visitor I would make sure this guy is healthy before I risk taking him because the buzz is his stock is rising and he may be selected in the 2nd round by someone including the Bears. With what I hear he may even sneak into the late first. If the Bears trade down in the round look for this player to be a possible target.
-
I agree and this is the one DT that I believe the Bears would take at 19. The key to this type of defense is the push in the middle and of the DTs in this draft he looks like he would be a force inside which would hepl out the 3 other guys on the line.

Why do you think Marshall is going to miss a game?
-
I like Glenn at OG only because when I watched the Senior Bowl practices and he was working one on one at OT he didn't fire out as well as he did when he was inside. He struggled in the begining but seemed to get better as his reps increased. The problem is this was against draft prospects not seasoned veteran DEs who would make him look like Webb. The reason why some scouts are projecting him as an OT is because of his size and experience of playing both tackle and guard positions. Former NFL GM Charlie Casserly thinks his best position will be RT and he mentions the size and the length of his arms to back up his opinion. I like him at OG because of the way he looked dominant in Senior Bowl practice and on highlights at Georgia.

The one year wonder factor is really the x factor when trying to project what Mercilus will do on the next level. It was the same question surrounding Jason Pierre-Paul coming out of South Florida. At that time Pierre-Paul was actually an after thought when scouts came to look at his teammate Selvie who everyone felt was a solid prospect. The other guy who I would like to draw a comparison to with Mercilus is another former Zook player Alex Brown the words consistency and motor were the buzz words on his ability. Then the boom or bust factor of highly touted Big Ten DE prospects recently has to scare you a little. In recent memory only Will Smith, Tamba Hali and Spencer have taken that lofty status to the league with some success. Here's a list: 03 Haynes Penn State 04 Smith OSU 05 James Wisc 06 Hali Penn State 07 Spencer Purdue 08 Gholston OSU 09 Maybin Penn State 11 Watt Wisc Kerrigan Purdue Clayborne Iowa Heyward OSU With an amazing number of picks of Big Ten DEs in round one last year only Watt looked like he was able to make a solid impact with the Texans last year as a rookie.Mercilus is considered not as good a prospect these 4 guys were last year.

I am trying to research the Chief's roster to see what they have done in the years when Emery was there and with him being there at the tail end of Herm Edwards tenure there some of the picks look similar to what the Bears would want on the defensive side. I'm guessing here but Emery probably had a pretty strong voice as a scout in the Chiefs draft rooms so seing guys like Dwayne Bowe,Tyson Jackson,Glenn Dorsey,Eric Berry,Javier Arenas,Brandon Albert,Jon Asamoah and Brandon Flowers leads me to believe he loves SEC players(which supposedly has been in his scouting region for years) so the Gilmore pick doesn't seem so far fetched .Allen in the 2nd mirrors the Asamoah pick for the Chiefs. I personally find it hard for the Bears to pass on a solid OL prospect or DL prospect especially if Lovie has his say. My problem with the next 4 top prospects at DE after Coples according to quite a few scouts is that 3 out of 4 are listed as OLBs also. That IMO is not a fit for this defense. The supposedly true DEs are rated as 2nd rounders after this group. this team needs a hand on the ground 3 down DE that can bring pressure and play the run. Upshaw may fit that description but is he a reach at 19. The spiralling downward of OT prospect Martin's draft stock is puzzling. On the field he looked athletic moved well and more importantly he protected the blind side of the number one overall pick without incident. If Martin is there I take him with the idea that I can play him inside at LG and Williams at LT to start with the idea of him ascending to the LT position if Williams who's contract is up soon isn't the answer. I'm leaning towards Martin in the first and Vinny Curry or Trumaine Johnson in the 2nd.

I've also seen a couple of scouts list him at FB which raise question marks about his draft stock as well.

It is so exciting to see all the interest and buzz this offseason and with a new guy at the helm for the first time in 10 offseasons all the trends that could be attributed to the previous GM are out the window. Then watching the current GM put his stamp on the roster by securing a top weapon for his franchise QB add depth to the QB and RB position and give THE BEST COACH ON THE STAFF(TOUB) some resources with resigning some of our own FAs and some solid FAs to fill spots of players that are no longer on the roster. The way the current roster is configured there are 61 players listed not including Unga(who IMO is done).35 of those have 5 years or less experience 17 are draft picks with 9 considered starters right now including Webb,Louis and Wright . Thats 3 positions that should have to compete for their spots. Of the 18 remaining guys with 5 years or less experience Devin Thomas is the only 1 that was actually drafted by an NFL team leaving the rest as guys off the scrap heap. This is where the upgrade and depth needs to be focused. So thats a total 29 positions on the roster that should have competetion. With the current roster number at 61 that leaves 19 spots left with 7 going to draft picks. With UFAs and maybe resigning Okoye that has to be done in 12 spots to fill a TC roster to 80 and IMO that is not enough to address every need this team has to fill unless some surprising cap friendly cuts can be made.
-
I agree with that but if you look at some history with the Spartan WR prospects you tend to see them being a little over-hyped. Lets name some names: Devin Thomas 2008 2nd Rd Charles Rogers 2003 1st Rd Herb Haygood 2002 5th Rd Plaxico Buress 2000 1st Rd Musin Muhammad 2nd Rd None of thes guys stayed with their team that drafted them except Moose. Moose BTW should have been considered a first round talent!

Teddy says strong offer is on table for Forte....
lemonej replied to madlithuanian's topic in Bearstalk
Agreed and you have to figure that if he plays this year under the tag he would be in self preservation mode.Meaning he wouldn't play through injuries and he would save money to be in position to holdout if he is tagged next year. -
Yeah and during that SB season they went a number of quarters without scoring a TD period. Thats why when I hear him talk about QB play and mechanics etc. I tune him out because he basically changed QBs like underewear.
