Yeah the arrogance of Pace probably overshadowed reality on this one. Especially with OT. However, Jimmy was pretty productive last year (caught the most TD passes) and as you described for Tackle he’s a good bridge/mentor for Kmet. Does the money factor come into play when you’re talking about keeping Fuller versus Graham? Yeah probably. That’s a tough call especially now that we’re looking at a third stringer for left OT (Wilkerson was starting last week after Peters and Borom went down during the game). Of course we’re aware of the issues with Jenkins. For what it’s worth Leno still looked like the turnstile he’s infamous for from when he was with us. He wasn’t nearly atrocious every play but during one drive for a TD I did see one play where he was on the wrong side of his defender (chasing him to the QB) and completely fell down on another. Fortunately for Heinike he’s a bit more maneuverable (and younger) than Dalton. I’d agree keeping Trubiksy at this point may have been the better option but at best he coulda been kept for the price of a franchise tag since his rookie deal was over(??).

In the category of “what could have been”: FWIW Taylor Heinike continues to look good in relief duty for Washington. A few of us discussed his impressive performance last year especially in the playoffs while playing relief duty for an injured Alex Smith. There was some speculation about bringing him to Chicago and might have been a bette option than was Dalton, if for no other reason cost. Hindsight being what it is and let’s say a player like Heinike was who the Bears got instead of Dalton but still drafted Fields how would things look today? Would we have been able to keep Fuller and paid ARob? Coulda, shoulda, didn’t.

Good point. Forgot Petrine was on the staff. He’d be a fine replacement. Did pretty good while in GB (minus the playoffs) and a few other places as DC. For what it’s worth, I read Safety Tashaun Gipson took ownership of how badly the defense and specifically the DBs played. Said he’d personally see to it he (and they) would improve. We shall see. https://www.chicagobears.com/news/gipson-confident-secondary-will-learn-from-miscues

It appears some players are getting a bit restless already.

There is no doubt at this point that Nagy and really much of the lead coaching staff is getting in the way of this teams' success. As has been true to form, Nagy feels he is the next coming of Andy Reid and believes the hype of him becoming the next offensive wunderkind. The Rams were giving up the middle of the field all night long and for awhile the Bears were successfully eating up that space and moving the ball. Montgomery was underutilized (with only 16 carries) but still managed to get 108 rushing yards with 6.8 yards per carry. That's against the reigning #1 defense in the league. Not all the running success was just Monty but the line doing what it needed to do in those situations. The cute play-calling of having Fields come in randomly was just that, cute and a waste of time. Outside of the 3 yard scoring run it seemed to disrupt the flow of what Dalton and the offense was trying to do. I don't think Fields is what Taysom Hill is to New Orleans so stop using him like that. Either he's your starting QB or he's not. And the repeated 4th down tries? C'mon man. On the defense side, I said it once and I'll say it again. At this point Desai is just a wanna-be Fangio guy. (similar to Nagy wanting to be the next Reid). We saw the warning signs last year when we heard Desai would be the next DC after being the team's defensive backs coach. The same positions we've seen slowly erode ever since 2018 when Fangio was last with us. Jackson has not gotten better, his opposite SS position has been a turnstile of players in the last few years, with Fuller leaving the CB positions are a big question mark (yes I hope JJ does great things but so far I haven't seen it) and the NB? Forget it. These were/are all Desai's guys. The same ones he allegedly was doing such a bang up job with that he deserved to be the next DC in Chicago. Stafford isn't nearly as good a QB as he looked like last night and that's more a conviction of how bad the Chicago D played than anything. That's on Desai and Nagy for putting him there. But after its all said and done; with GB, Detroit and Minny all losing the Bears are still tied for first place in the division.
