Thats true, but traditionally the guaranteed money is around half the value. Also, that deal would have negated his salary for 2006 where he only made 720k. I am not saying he made the wrong decision, but at that point, what did he expect to make? It just seems like he will not be content until he is paid Urlacher money, and that will not happen with the Bears.

Two words - Damage Control. He hosed up and now he is trying to change his tune. Too late IMO. His true colors came out. Someone made a good comment about the fact that he should be pissed off at the Players Union for agreeing to the terms that the Bears are operating under. In the salary cap era, I think the Franchise tag is a good thing. I also like the fact that he said the 33 million over 7 was not fair at the time. Compared to what he was making at the time, and the money that would have been upgraded, that would have been a decent deal.

An update from the ESPN interview: Man that seven-year, $33 million deal sure looks good now, doesn't it Briggs? That was March of 2006 which was definitely a fair market deal at the time. Either of those drafts would be sweet. I agree though, I think the 2nd one is more realistic.

HoofHearted, if you want to get in, you can take my 2nd team (Chargers) if you would like. If you don't want that team, there are a few others with more than one team that I am sure would be willing to give one up so you can participate.

I say trade him to Oakland or Arizona. He is from California and played in Arizona. Also, depending on what round they would be willing to give up, the picks would be decent. 2nd round (33 or 38), 3rd round (65 or 69), 4th (96 or 101). He was a 3rd round pick, so I hope the Bears could at least get a 2nd and a 4th for him. Something like 33rd and 96th would be sweet. I would even take the Bears getting a 2nd and swapping a 4th.

Do the Bears retain his rights after 2007 if he does not sign the franchise tender? I thought the player was a Free Agent and the Bears could not franchise him again. The only way to franchise him twice would be if he signed the contract this year.

Just a heads up, they said they Briggs will be talking about this on ESPN Sportscenter tonight, so depending on where you are that would be the 5,6, or 7pm Sportscenter.

It is funny how players all of a sudden become like this. How soon he forgets the Bears drafted his ass, and every other team in the league passed on him (several times). I could see if he was a first rounder, but he does owe a lot of his success to Lovie and the Bears. Proving a point and letting him sit out a year is nice and all, but I would rather get something in return for him. If a team is willing to sign him to a FA contract in a year, I am sure they would want to get an extra year out of him and sign him now. I am wondering what the going price is for someone like Briggs? I also wonder if this whole situation has actually lowered his value. If teams are not willing to give up any decent draft picks, I wonder what type of player the Bears could land (Offensive Line, Defensive Line, Randy Moss?).

The Bears lost Worrell to Miami as well, so it seems like another Safety is an automatic selection.

I don't think Briggs is even close to Urlacher. Urlacher is a perennial DOY candidate which is a big difference from a Pro Bowler. If Briggs was that good, the Bears would be dying to extend him and other teams would be showing mad interest. Right now, from what has been reported, there has been zero interest in him for the type of money he is looking for. Also, his whole attitude about the situation is lowering his value.

This has nothing to do with how he played in the SB. This case has been ongoing for quite awhile now. He just needs to be treated like any other citizen. Take the pro football player out of the equation. Did he break the law, violate probation or not?

I just think they jumped the gun on this move. I would have thought the value of RBs this offseason would be higher with the likes of Henry and Green already signing deals with other teams, and with the thin draft at the position. The draft is thin, and the other guys that were available who were equal to or better than Jones already signed (Green - HOU, Henry - DEN). Turner from SD is a RFA, so it would take a 1st and 3rd round picks to get him. When you take all of those things into perspective, I just feel this deal was on the low end of the spectrum.

This is not completely different, the only difference was that he was a RFA. I was talking in terms of value, not position. The bottom line is the Bears could have gotten more for TJ, especially from the Jets who were looking for someone just like him. Why not get the 37th, and then swap the other 2nd rounders (59th and 63rd)? Since the Jets had two 2nd round picks, there seemed to be much more wiggle room for deals. Look at it from the Jets perspective. You get a proven veteran RB who can run, block, catch, who doesn't fumble much, and is very durable - and all you give up is 26 spots in the 2nd round on a pick that was not originally yours.
