Brad Biggs talked about this in his mailbag and he pretty much agrees with you. That being said, most agree that Floyd is a mid-first round talent. It's easier to find a 5 technique later than it is to find a legitimate edge rusher. You want to draft an explosive playmaker in round one. If we think Floyd can be that guy, I can totally see it happening.

So Dallas has a great o-line and is terrible because of position players. Carolina and Denver win with bad o-lines, because of other players. Aren't you making the argument that having an overall well-rounded team more important than just having a good o-line? If Ronnie Stanley somehow slips to #11, I'd be thrilled if we took him since he'd be the best player available. Otherwise, we are better off drafting d-line where there is a far greater need.

It is interesting. Although at this point, I don't know if anyone has Jared Goff ranked ahead of Carson Wentz. And it has the Bears taking Chris Jones at #11. For what it's worth, Scounts Inc. has him ranked as the #32 prospect and Nolan Nawrocki has him #62. Although upsets happen in the draft every year.

You sure? Who is our swing tackle? We sign two G/C's in Ramirez & Larsen. Both are solid veterans who could compete for a starting job with Slausen and Grasu. Meanwhile at the tackle position we have Massie, Leno, and Tayo Fabaluje (we have a couple other guys I've never heard of). If Leno is bad, I could easily see us moving Long to LT. It's much easier to replace him than Leno.

True. But this didn't come from some idiot on Twitter. It came from Rich Cimini who is a respected ESPN reporter who covers the Jets. It's true GM's say nothing to the media, but in terms of these rumors, more often than not, where there is smoke there is fire. The Bears have a ton of cap space and desperately need a DT. It's not a stretch that the Bears would inquire about Wilkerson. Hell, maybe we offered a 4th rounder for him. That could be the extent of it.

Agreed 100%. Considering the $$$ Brock Eisweiler and Sam Bradford received, it's beneficial for a team to draft one. It's hard to imagine Kapernick being with the 49ers at the start of the season. He doesn't want to be there and the team doesn't seem to want him. IMO the 49ers would love Goff. Getting back to the original question, assuming we have White, AJ, and Royal, the WR position is a position of strength for the Bears. And this is a team that wants to run the ball more. No way we take Treadwell.

We CAN'T take a guy like that at #11. Too great of a risk. However, I'd be good with taking a gamble on him with our #2 pick. Most of the mocks I see still have him listed as a 1st rounder. Dan Durkin's mock draft with the SCORE, that just came out today, has him going #19 to Buffalo. Considering he's a top 10 talent, he could be an absolute bargain with our 2nd round pick.
-
Also, why is everyone so worried about the cap? We are 20 million under and it will be less when we resign Alshon. Also, who is the important player on this roster that will be a free agent in 2017? Willie Young? Even if we did get him and sign him to an extension, we are still in good cap shape for next year.
-
What if they'd give him to us for our 2nd rounder?

From profootballrumors: "Though Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan has said he is not “actively pursuing” a trade involving defensive ed Muhammad Wilkerson, Cimini says the Bears are a “team to watch” as the draft approaches, noting that New York would instantly accept an offer of the No. 11 overall pick. Wilkerson, who was designated as the Jets’ franchise player, can be assigned the franchise tag again in 2017, essentially allowing Gang Green to lock him up for $34.5MM over two years." I love the idea of getting him and signing him to a long term deal. We have plenty of cap space and he will only be 27 in October. That being said, I hate the idea of giving up the #11 and I don't know how it would work with Alshon's situation.

Challenging? In a short time Thompson looked WAY better than Mariani. AND we signed Bolden. Mariani has value as a key back-up as both a return man and as a slot receiver when Eddie Royal is inevitably hurt. I don't see him being a regular part of the return game.

Based on what Josh Hill did last season, I'm guessing they only view him as a blocking/move the chains TE. The Saints want guys who can stretch the field. They paid a ton of money to Fleener who was drafted #34 overall. That tells me he has great measureables. As opposed to Hill who is good at blocking. In short, Hill is more valuable to us than he is to New Orleans.
-
Wait: When was the last time a team gave 2 first rounders and paid a big contract for a non-quarterback??? Hershel Walker was a pretty big deal but I don't think there was a salary cap. Or any real free agency. We might get this deal except AJ's salary cap is the biggest sticking point. At the absolute best, we get one late #1 pick for him. That's being optimistic.
-
As per Jeff Dickerson: "A source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan that the Bears' offer to Hill is a three-year deal worth a maximum of $7.5 million, with $3.25 million guaranteed" What do you want to bet most of that 3.25 million will count towards this year's salary cap? Not that the Saints were that interested since they've already signed 2 TE's. We are clearly over-paying for players. But that's what you do when your team sucks and you have a ton of salary cap room. I have no complaints. Good signing.

The Bears announced today they view Lee as strictly a blocking TE. In terms of him being light in the pants, Matt Spaeth is one of the better blocking TE's in the league. When he was with the Bears he was 6-7 and appeared to be skinny as hell. Yet he's still in the league for his blocking ability so who knows.
-
Yep. I drafted him in one league thinking he'd be the next Jimmy Graham. The difference is Graham is basically a big WR with the speed to stretch the field. Hill is a better blocker but a much slower receiver. He can move the chains and he'll be good in the red-zone. If Zach Miller, Kevin White, Royal and AJ are all healthy, we don't need him to stretch the field.
-
No. Absolutely not. You have top 10 WR waiting to get on the field. You have a legit #1 WR with the franchise tag due a HUGE pay-day (and ironically the Bears have more money than they know what to do with.) AND, because we have more money than we know what to do with we are keeping Eddie Royal. You need to spread the wealth and that is a ton invested in the position--particularly for a run first team. AJ is on the team for next year. I'm certain we'll reach a long term deal. We get to the 4th round and we see a WR we like--great. But we have WAY too many needs at this point.

Leming seem to think Omar Bolden will be signed...

Brad Biggs was saying to watch for the Bears to make a move at TE this week. He mentioned Josh Hill was a possibility. Boom. If Biggs is Tweeting this, I'll bet it's a done deal. Course the Bears have WAY more money than a lot of other teams. It's easy for us to slightly over-pay for a guy because our roster is so thin. He's never had an interception so he's probably more of a ST's specialist. The position has been miserable for us every since #23 left town. -
Agreed. I figured he'd get 1 or 2 years for between 2-4 million. Ultimately it's better for everyone that he moves on. He's never going to live up to the expectation of being a #1 draft pick.
-
New England screws up plenty. But they land correctly more than any other team. The Shea signing was telling because they have very little cap space. They are the best at bargain shopping and they gave Shea more money than any of us thought he would receive. Again, our coaching staff publicly stated they really wanted him back. I get what you are saying that he didn't show much on the field. But either we are right or the Bears and Pats are wrong. With Bostic, they gave a very late 6th round pick for a former 2nd rounder. The knock on Bostic is that he has the talent to be successful, but he's undisciplined and always out of position. If the Pats can fix that it's a steal. If they can't, it's a 6th round pick. No big deal. The thing is, they have a full offseason and training camp to work with him. It's not like they traded a 2nd rounder to get him.
-
I'd be good with Cook or Chandler. Ideally we want Miller to stay healthy and add a veteran back-up we can work into some 2 TE sets. I'm still wondering how we are going to spend that 10 million . . . .
-
Kari Lee looks purely to be a blocking TE. He only had one reception last year. In the Washington game there was a ball that came his way and he looked like he had the hands of a defense tackle. That being said, we gave up a 2017 6th round pick for him which indicates we covet his blocking skills. This discussion should be limited to will we draft a TE in the first 3 rounds? We do that, we expect them to be a receiver who contributes immediately. We use a 6th round pick on one, and they are going to be a special teamer for a couple years. IMO we don't draft a guy the first two days. Why guy I haven't heard mentioned is Jared Cook. He be a nice player to add to the mix.
-
On one hand I agree with you. On the other hand, our coaching staff REALLY seemed to like him and went out of their way to compliment him. This staff does not unnecessarily compliment players. The fact that New England was willing to give him 3 years 12 million tells you something. Ultimately, like we saw with Martellus Bennett, a players value is determined by what NFL teams think of a player.
-
How about this angle: Brad Biggs speculated that part of the reason for Cutler's red zone interceptions were Martellus running the wrong routes. That's why they took him out of red zone packages. Which is why Bennett threw a fit and had to leave practice. Then there's Martellus missing a block in the Denver game that caused Robbie's field goal to be blocked. Martellus was a good player on a really bad team. When he was out at the end of the season, I felt like we really should have missed him. But it really didn't seem to matter. We were 4 & 7 with him and 2 & 3 without him. Finally, what Rosenbloom's column ignores is this: If Martellus pulls that crap on Bellichick's team, what do you think happens? No way Bellichick tolerates that crap. Bellichick would do the EXACT same thing Fox did. I really think this is a case of us thinking a player is better than he actually is.

How about in 2007? We just went to the Super Bowl and well loved the 2006 draft class that included Hester, Manning (despite his super bowl mishap), Dvoracek, and Mark Anderson who had a double sack season. And then we were THRILLED at drafting Greg Olsen. We had no idea what flops Dan Bazuin, Garrett Wolfe, and Michael Okwo would be.
