R. Penny might end up being a good RB in the league but one of his weaknesses is his pass route running. 42 receptions in his career. . I have read several scouting reports on him and several comments about that, about his lack of ability to break tackles. In his highlight film, there is only one run where he extended the ball after contact. Will not do well running up the middle in the NFL. He runs through all arm tackles in the film. Weaknesses High-cut, upright runner Despite urgency as a runner, won't break many quality tackle attempts One-speed runner without a big burst gear to clear first and second level defenders cleanly Has modest yards after first contact numbers over the last two seasons Can get a little "bounce-happy" with his willingness to try and cut inside runs to the outside once he gets onto second level Doesn't always show a feel for the best run lane choices Will miss backside, cutback lanes May not have the long speed to pull away from tacklers and hit big chunk runs Scouts say he may need additional reps to lock-in on the playbook Needs to improve route-running to become a more effective pass catcher 03/02/18 - 2018 NFL Combine, Friday: Another Senior Bowl standout -- San Diego State's Rashaad Penny -- also made cents Friday. The 5-foot-11, 224-pound Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year helped quiet critics, clocking a pair of 4.47-second 40-yard-dash times. Penny, who led the nation with 2,248 rushing yards, starred during the Senior Bowl game, leading all running backs with 64 rushing yards and scoring on a 73-yard touchdown reception. That, however, came after a week of practice in which he struggled in pass protection and put the ball on the turf on a couple of occasions. Penny needed a strong workout Friday to reinforce the breakaway ability he showed at San Diego State and in Mobile, Ala., and he delivered, likely cementing himself as a second-round pick. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com 01/27/18 - RB Rashaad Penny struggled during the week of practice, putting the ball on the ground several times and drawing the wrath of the Houston Texans' coaching staff with a false start. The vision, stutter-step, quick acceleration and soft hands which helped the 5-11, 224-pounder lead the nation in rushing yards in 2017 and earn Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Year the past three seasons showed up Saturday. Penny led all participants in all-purpose yards, highlighted by a 37-yard burst up the middle in the first quarter, and a 73-yard catch-and-run following a pretty little flip pass by Virginia's Kurt Benkert. 01/24/18 - Senior Bowl Wednesday: Just as disconcerting for scouts is the poor play of the 5-11, 224-pound Penny, who galloped for 2,248 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2017 for San Diego State. While scouts remain intrigued by his vision, agility and straight-line speed, Penny has struggled with ball security, putting the ball on the ground at least four times over the first two days of practice, including mishandling returns and fumbling twice. Penny's struggles as a returner are perhaps especially surprising given that he earned Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year honors in 2017, becoming the first player to earn the award three consecutive years. He scored eight return touchdowns -- seven off kick returns -- in his career. Penny's lack of focus has drawn the ire of the Texans' coaches, who pulled him from the lineup during scrimmaging after a false start. Penny appeared to get an early jump on another play late in Tuesday's practice, as well. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com He looks good in his highlight film, but I have yet to find a college player that does'nt.

We haven't seen the contract yet, it is for 9.6. It could be 4 mil the first year. which means we pay an extra 1 mil this year. If he plays well, its very cheap for a second year. Win win
-
They were a negotiating a long term contract with him and his agent asked for a large contract. So if we did the 2.9, it would have pissed them off. So Pace did the right thing by letting the NFL set his value. Now he knows what his value is. If we gave him 2.9 and he was asking for 6-7 a year, we would have another situation like Ashton that thinks he is worth more than his value. Would have booked at the end of the year lie Ashton.
-
J. Jenkins coming back as a backup to Goldman. Filling out the roster, I still think we add one more draftee to the DL mix.
-
It is not to expensive of a contract. What Pace did was let the league set the value of Meredith. I read where they offered him a contract and they were far apart on the value so they let the league set the value. Pace did not screw this up.
-
I think we have to wait until the contract details come out. 5.4 is suppose to be the guaranteed money. That almost just a one year deal with no risk after that if he fails. So shooting low loses 2 mil, not a big deal. It at least establishes that there is other opinions that he may turn out to be a good WR. 2 mil is no big deal when you have a cheap RB and QB for 4 more years.
-
You make it sound like he is worthless as a pass catching RB, it is simply not the case. As you will see this year, he will garner 1200 yards and 40 catches. See me at the end of the season to eat crow.
-
Hamilton is a WR that fits the profile. 4th is the logical round to grab one.
-
It is not like he is learning a new language, its just more practice time on catching the ball better. So would you take a 3rd round pick for Howard? that would be stupid and we are not getting any first round picks. Your dreaming. Hunt had a catch rate of 87%, Howards was 72%. It is not like he caught 1 out of 3. He is not terrible at it.
-
it will end up being 2 mil more than the tender offer, no big deal , plus if he succeeds , would save a big payday on the next year contract going forward.
-
I think that the traits for this potential are for production, getting better every year( hard workers), competitiveness, lack of ego. Theilen is a good example of this type of WR. I think Merideth falls in this category with a breakout year coming. Will be the 2nd leading WR on this team.
-
This is a very good article on the success of WRs no matter where they are drafted. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-spt-bears-nfl-draft-receivers-gems-20180407-story.html

The only way we have a shot at trading down is if one of the 4 QBs are available or Barkley. So we need to hope one of the 4 drop to our spot.
-
Do you really believe Howard will only run for 800 yards? I suspect he will be closer to leading the league than being in the top 20. The biggest thing the spread west coast will do is open up the running game in the middle of the field. Hunt had 1327 yards in this spread offense. He had 53 receptions. So if Howard has 40 as a average pass catcher, do you really think his rushing yards will only be 800 yards? No way. In the last two years he had 23 and 29 receptions. A user friendly offense, even if his reception rate is low . Hunt had a catch rate of 84%, Howards was 72%. Lets say he improves to 78%, how much of a difference will that make in his rushing yards? I think not much.
-
What sense does it make to give up Howard, another young player or a future 1 or 2 to move up to grab a RB? You replace one strength and lose two assets.Howard is a hard worker and will get better at catching. He may not be a bluechip pass catcher but he absolutely fits the power middle running game that the spread offense will put in place.

A player is not going to pay attention to rumors the internet creates. If he was going to be traded, there would be a deal done. Not speculation.
-
I do not think we have enough draft capital to move up in this draft. A good player will fall to us, so we will take what the draft gets us. Since their is less blue chip players this year and the QB situation, we have a better chance of moving down. Both of those situations would be acceptable.
-
Our two biggest needs are OG and OLB. We need depth at ILB, CB, WR and OT. I think we address the first two needs with our first two picks. If a BPA comes in to play we may be drafting Firtzpatrick may come into play which would be fine also as long as we address the other two positions. Another player I think may be in play as BPA is R. Smith/ILB who could also play outside. He is a top 10 talent that will still be on the board. I think they could take him more so that a Davenport that is a developmental player.
-
I still think we could take a RB late in the draft but he is a good backup RB that can catch the ball.
-
your posts are always well thought out, you make a lot of sense.
-
He would be an upgrade, but we probably need to have more information. Why would Raiders let him go? Lots of questions to ask. Anyone know, is it his contact.
-
I am not saying he will not make a contribution in his first year. My point is the high expectations will not be realized his first or even second year. He is very young and has a good coach to teach him. On the other hand , if we get the chance to draft Nelson, he would have instant impact at a position we also need an upgrade. If Nelson is there, I am all in on Edmunds as our pick.
-
I think Edmunds is so very young that he will take a few years to develop. I would like someone that has an impact from day one. I think Chubb, Nelson, and maybe Fitzpatrick could be those that do. If none of them are there, Edmunds or Davenport, possibly Landry should be our choice. At least they have all have upside of being a quality edge rusher, but not guaranteed . I hope they address the Oline in one or two, of course we shouldn't reach for that, still take the BPA if it falls that way.

Round 1 Pick 15 (ARI): Edmunds, Tremaine, OLB, Virginia Tech (A) Round 2 Pick 7: Washington, James, WR, Oklahoma State (B-) Round 2 Pick 15 (ARI): Miller, Kolton, OT, UCLA (B) Round 3 Pick 15 (ARI): Smith, Braden, OG, Auburn (A) Round 4 Pick 5: Thomas, Chad, DE, Miami (FL) (A+) Round 4 Pick 15: Toliver II, Kevin, CB, LSU (A+) Round 5 Pick 8: DeLuca, Nick, ILB, North Dakota State (C) Round 6 Pick 7: J Hall, P, DT, Sam Houston State (A+) Round 7 Pick 6: Edmonds, Chase, RB, Fordham (A) Here is a draft where I made one trade with ARZ for the 15th, 2nd and 3rd round pick. I addressed the OLB, ILB and 5t with Thomas. Also a backup NT in J P Hall Also got a OG and OT to help with our line depth. Grabbed Washington is the second as BPA.

Ward would be a good choice only if a few others are gone. Nelson-Edmunds- Fritzpatrick- Landry then I would pick Ward. CB is not a weakness for us and think we will fill other needs first. Our DBs were ranked 10th last year in the league and will be better this year with the growth the young players will have. Fritzpatrick will fit out defense better than Ward with flexibility to place every spot in the D backfield, so I think he has more value than Ward.
