The Ravens drafted Timmy Jernigan last year and didn't they just trade Ngata so maybe they're eyeing Shelton. The Pats just cut Wilfork and continue to bring in veterans like Tommy Kelly and Gerrard Warren to play in rotation with Wilfork. I'm saying not many NTs get drafted in the first round and those that do are obviously special. Can you truly say that about Shelton? Only one of the first rd guys I listed has not lived up to his draft status and thats Raji all the others are beasts imo.

There were other tackles taken in the first round but I filtered it down to NT body types example Suh and McCoy went in the top 5 but neither are a prototypical 3-4 NT and what difference does it make if the teams aren't 3-4 and looking specifically for that type of player? When I looked at it teams like Baltimore,NE and Pittsburgh continued to go OLB and Edge type player in round 1 with the exception of a secondary player or two mostly CB.

I just looked up all the long time 3-4 teams first round draft picks and these are the guys that I consider to be the type of guy you are looking for and what pick they were taken. BJ Raji #9 Vince Wilfork#21 Marcel Dareus #3 Ngata #12 Lotulelel #14 Dan Williams #26 As you can se only a couple were drafted in the top 10 and only Dareus in the top 5. I agree there needs to be and addition at the position but I just don't think it would be smart to spend a top 10 pick on what may only be a 2 down player.

Sc we have a guy on the roster that actually played the position in this scheme and have a DC that has utilized some smaller guys at the position recently in his last place of employment. Why is that so difficult for eveyone to understand that maybe this staff is going to take a year to evaluate what they have and go from there. The Bears drafted a lot o young defensive players last year and they need to see what they have before they decide what to do going forward. That is why I'm an advocate of strengthening the offense to keep the defense off the field which helps improve the defensive numbers.

With the signing of Ducasse and Long softening his stance at staying at OG, an OL pick early in the draft is possible to build depth and competition. With Leno and Ola as backups we need more depth.

You can take a flyer on Sam or draft Shane Ray at 7 and avoid the media swarm.

Again AB on the same page as you!

The other option is the Miller kid who can't stay healthy. He was doing well in camp and preseason until he went down.

So as a new GM I'm going to spend my first pick on an injured player who is going to be behind a Pro Bowl player. That doesn't make sense to me as well as drafting a QB in round 1 if you have committed to Cutler for basically 2 years. When I started this mock thread it is with the idea that this team should strengthen the strongest unit on the team and improve the weakest. By having no knowledge of the history of Pace and Fox when it comes to drafting this is total speculation and I still believe that we should go BPA no matter what position and at the 7th pick a NT is not going to be a difference maker but a WR can get you points.

7. Amari Cooper WR Ala no more gushing from me 39. Benadrick Mckinney ILB Mississippi St Saw what Fangio did with an alumus from this same school. 71. Jacoby Glenn CB Central Fla It may be wishful thinking that this kid drops to this round but I'm hoping this can be Charles Tillman part 2 103. Ibraheim Campbell S Northwestern I like the Idea of this kid coming in learning behind Rolle and Mundy and playing special teams. 134.Bryan Bennett Qb SE Louisiana We have to keep trying to grab a future Qb and this kid would need developing because he couldn't beat out Mariotta so he transferred SE LA He has flaws but so does Fales and neither should see the field next year. 167. Xavier Williams DT Northern Iowa Hopefully this kid getting drafted this late will come in to camp with the biggest chip on his shoulder while learning the game behind Ratliff as well as Ferguson. I struggled with My round 2 pick because I wanted Brett Hundley there but felt adding attitude in the middle of this defense was important.

Any draft mock that has Cooper coming to the Bears makes me happy but the way the Draftek mock went towards some of this teams needs is a plus. As for criticism of when a certain position is drafted is kind of crazy since the team just spent big bucks on an OLB that was drafted in the 5th round by another team. I'm hoping that there is some interest in Central Fla CB named Jacoby Glenn in the mix for a day 2 or 3 pick.

The scheme(defense) change is the biggest variable that we fans are dealing with in terms with trying to project what this new regime will do.Trading Marshall and letting Briggs go as well as Conte and then bringing in veterans like Rolle and Royal doesn't point to total rebuild. So the direction of the draft looks like plug and play.

would you swap our 7th to Saints for their 13th and 31st picks
lemonej replied to 50england50's topic in Bearstalk
I believe anything is on the table in NO and Stills and Graham being traded away to drop salary proves it.They have some issues with ownership also and I guess GM Loomis is trying to oversee the Pelicans also according to some reports. -
Last year everyone was shocked when Emery took Fuller and the idea was to put Jennings at Nickel on 3rd down and multiple WR sets, which seemed odd when he had just signed an extension. Fuller was the better player and filled in well for Tillman. Its still up in the air if he was the better pick than Clinton-Dix. I'm positive that Emery went BPA over an obvious need.

I think hes considered an OLB because he would be similar to Freeney and Peppers in that regard who both had to convert to OLB. He may not be as athletic but if used properly he might be able to pull it off.

I always thought drafting the BPA meant selecting the highest rated player on your board that you configured at your draft position. If someone unexpected drops to you and you have him rated highest on your board you take him. The team that has ruled the NFC North drafts this way. Drafting Rodgers in round 1 when you have Farve as your QB support that. They keep drafting WRs every year with Driver,Jennings,Jones,Nelson,Cobb and Adams. They also seem to draft CBs every year edge rushers and NTs regardless of how well the starter is established. They build depth and thats what taking the BPA does.I'm a big fan of Alshon Jeffrey but he has only played 1 full season healthy and he will be in a contract year none of the other WRs on the roster stepped up while he and Marshall were out with various injuries. Right now its Royal and Jeffrey that you feel comfortable with behind them its a crap shoot. Wilson's hands seemed a little suspect when he came back from injury. They do need to add a WR to the mix and Im on record wanting Cooper. Personally I'll be satisfied with whatever the pick is.Taking the BPA also helps to create some decent trade on draft day also.

Maybe dinner, drinks and back to my place(Halas Hall) then "penned" lol.

Hear what you are saying about Shelton but since he ran the slowest time by a DT recorded in Combine history, he is not a 7th pick! If you were to be a trade partner with Cleveland and get that 2nd 1st rd pick maybe.

I look at Houston and see BJ Raji. Sometimes DE sometimes inside. Us longtime Bear fans really are new to this defense with the exception of only seeing it played against us. Im hoping Fangio brings us a twist on this defense similar to what Buddy Ryand did with his 4-3. Though Ryan was stubborn when it came to matching up, that's not the case with Fangio.

I'm so fed up with the rumor frenzy that I find it hard to believe anything until I see actual signings.

Bears GM Ryan Pace: “We’re moving forward with Jay Cutler”
lemonej replied to madlithuanian's topic in Bearstalk
If you still need a starting calibe QB after tomorrw that you only have to pay 26 mil too, do you do it. Pace has to say that if he wants to get a real deal and value for Cutler. If the rumuored Gase offense is to run the ball and do play action to minimize the turnovers and take some decision making out of Cutler's hands ala Mike Martz( a Gase supporter), then you can do the same thing with a rookie or a journeyman still out there. -
My wish is the Bears draft Brett Hundley as the future QB. Reports are today that he had a smoot pro day according to sources on NFL.com and his coach a former NFL coach says he thinks he is ready for the NFL but not necessarily to start.I'm ok with that but the problem is he may need to be drafted in round 2.

Listening to JD and John Clayton on AM 1000 ESPN right now. and neither have confirmed anything.

Bernstein: Bears working relentlessly to move Cutler
lemonej replied to DABEARSDABOMB's topic in Bearstalk
I am as well.He has proved to this point that he wouldn't be a good backup so why keep him in a role that he would not fit in.I say either keep him both years and take your lumps or dump him save some cap space and draft someone and take your lumps that way.
