The Bears hired Jim Arthur as Strength and Conditioning coach today. Arthur was a protege and assistant of Rusty Jones, who was our S&C coach from 2005 - 2013 during the Lovie Smith era. Rusty is widely respected around the league and works in Indianapolis now. It's pretty clear that we are going back to the Tony Dungy / Lovie Smith tree for a 4-3 cover 2 type defense, and supporting staff philosophies, all the way down to S&C. And this is a very good sign. Ryan Bates is obviously another stop gap acquisition. He plays C/OG. He wasn't good enough to start for Buffalo to so he isn't good enough for us. Ryan Clady ran a 5.18 forty and posted a 31" vertical at the Boise State Pro Day. Clady tweaked his pectorals on the bench press at the Combine and was unable to do the rest of his drills. A terrific athlete, Clady projects as a starting left tackle at the next level. Zone-blocking teams will be intrigued. Source: draftheadquarters.com

Is he our starting center next year? Groy filled in decently for Ola last week once he got the first series jitters out of the way. Looking at his background and knowing he played FB at one point for Wisconsin which means he has to have some athleticism. Garza just doesn't move his feet as well as he used to and I think we need to address the center position this offseason. Taylor Boggs hasn't cracked the lineup and with all the injuries we've had there were plenty of opportunities to do so. Not saying they are the same or he is as good, but Nall has vision and sneaky speed. I think he will become a weapon for the Bears. I am surprised he wasn't drafted and glad he chose us. He must have seen the fit also. Below is a clip of him in action.

Pace is on fire this offseason. It is hard to think of another team that has literally addressed a major need with a solid to great player without breaking the bank with every acquisition or signing. Just look at some of the other contracts handed out. If we can now add some depth in the secondary, I think we are set going into the draft. Maybe Robinson and Bruton, and re-sign Miller. Do we really have a strong need at any other positions?

Pace has taken a lot of flack for his first round picks since he has been here but I still think he has did a good job of developing a core of good players going forward. I heard one interview from a former GM talk about Pace and that the draft is only one part of the over all picture in building a franchise and he thinks he as did a good job. This years draft could have potentially brought us our Franchise QB that is still yet to be determined but the arrow is pointing up. Swope had to retire due to past concussions. Almost everyone here, including myself, wanted him in the 4th, 5th, and 6th round. Glad we dodged that bullet.
